I have been training at PMA for many years - It's a great and solid place to train - jiu jitsu is a physical combat/ self defense art but in my opinion it is also an on going journey of honest self discovery - but you can't do it on your own - the people you surround yourself with as training partners will be very impactful to you - find a gym, instructors, and training partners who can inspire and better you and also walk the walk with you - thru the highs lows and mids of training - PMA is that for me , my training partners are a true mix of people , higher and lower belts , same belts as myself - younger, older , similar age to myself - guys and gals - working to better ourselves at jiu jitsu. The instructors here are down to earth and very good ...like very, very good. PMA has stayed the course in this community for a long time as a place to develop solid martial artists. If you want to learn from the best in Fresno then PMA is where you need to go. It's no strange reason they've been In business over 25years! Whether it is wrestling, grappling, gi and no-gi Brazilian jiujitsu they have it all. They have a ton of experienced black belts if you're interested in competing. Even if you're not into competing, and just want to get a workout this is also the place for you. I played soccer for 15years and the workout and conditioning needed for this it no comparison. The staff and everyone is super friendly and make you feel welcomed. From the experienced upper belt to the newer white belts everyone helps you out! I moved to Fresno after having trained for ~5 years in other states. After dropping in at a few schools I found PMA. It was an easy decision to sign up immediately. They are an absolutely fantastic jiu jitsu school with an excellent training environment. The coaches are all knowledgeable and friendly. The training is challenging but always safe. They regularly compete at local tournaments and do very well. There's something for everyone at this school, be it the casual newcomer or serious competitor. I have been coming here since February 2024, after moving from the Bay. I just had my 2nd son in June of 2023. Matt and his team are so kind. I love going to Pete and Ryan's classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; however, a small group of moms train together at noon on Mondays and Wednesdays. It has been amazing and welcoming. It has taken me weeks to be able to write this without breaking down. Pacific Martial Arts broke our trust, put my child in danger, and continuously neglected him. My son had been training at PMA for over a year, and never "earned" a stripe on his white belt, because most of the coaches and especially the owner (Matt Smith), never pay attention. Matt proposed a "great opportunity" for a tournament for first timers. He pushed the tournament after each practice and assured us that it was a great time to get our white belt child into tournaments so we agreed to have my son participate, placing our trust in the school and the coaches. On the day of the tournament, my 7 year old son weighing 54 pounds was moved from the category for 6-7 year olds at 55 pounds and below, to a higher category for 8-9 year olds from 55-65 pounds. That should have been the first red flag for me, but I don't know the sport and let the coach know that I was placing my trust in his decision after I asked him to move my son back down to the correct category. He refused and said that he needed my son in the higher category to make the numbers even, which was the second red flag I ignored, once again placing the trust on the coach and the school we had been a part of for over a year. During the first round he went against a 9 year old boy that was clearly over 10 pounds heavier (see the reference photo below that compares the size and shows the shoulder line to emphasize the size difference, my son on the left). Luckily for PMA, my son was not seriously injured, but our trust was completely broken. NO COACH that he had ever trained with was there during the rounds coaching him through it, while the other school had multiply coaches. That last red flag and final straw; To not support your student during their first tournament and dismiss the fact that they were purposely placed in the wrong category is dangerous and unacceptable. Lastly, my son went back yesterday to finish the month and mostly because I, as the parent, talked to him about it and he wanted to go back so I saw it as an opportunity for him to feel powerful and brave for stepping back into the environment that caused us so much harm, and to no surprise, Matt was there, along with the other coaches from the day of the tournament, and NO ONE acknowledged him, not one coach talked to him about his effort in the tournament, not one coach checked in to see if how he was feeling after the tournament and if everything was okay, nothing at all, which sadly wasn't surprising and makes me wonder how we lasted there so long. PMA should be ashamed and should not have classes for kids if they don't have the care and passion to coach each of them properly. read more

This review is not just for this gym, but for PMA in general, more specifically Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I feel that this place is a really awesome environment. Im learning so much and not to mention, this place is established. The organization and the knowledge and education of these instructors are amazing. That is what has set a lot of things apart for me. The instructors are so great at teaching and training, they make this game feel like a real life chess match. This is different from the gyms Ive gone to in the past because this organization made me feel that this isn't a place to bully or be bullied by other hardcore guys, rather a chess match. Everyone is humble, welcoming, and all focused in learning and getting better. This place can get hardcore as well. Whether it be to roll in none stop rounds for an hour and half without a gi, this place offers it. Or if you want to roll with a gi, the same trainers and instructors do the same thing too. I just feel super humbled, and motivated each time I go here. Im having a great experience with everyone here. All the instructors at each gym bring something new and interesting to put into your mental tool box of things to do and learn. The older students helps out with the younger ones as well and basically this is a nonstop learning session. I am just so appreciative and humbled by everyone here that I want to try my best each time I go. I try to condition and study on my off days from going there. I appreciate that the students here are just your normal person who works but also wants to get it on and learn and to get better. This is important to me, so I dont feel that I have to compete with MMA fighters who has no job except to train and fight. Im not discounting anyone who aren't like that, because they do bring it on hardcore too. But its another cool thing to relate to everyone as well. Im summary I really enjoy this program because of how the instructors teaches everything well. I enjoy the organization and structure of it all. And I like the students and everyone else who trains there. All in all, I just can't say enough good things about the BJJ program here. read more

I've been training here for almost 8 months and I couldn't have had a more positive experience. I am a 26 year old woman and I was completely terrified to start but am so glad I did. Every time I step foot on the mats, I'm glad I'm there. I mostly attend women's only classes, but have gone to many co-ed classes and they're equally inviting. The amount of support given from everyone is amazing. Each instructor has their own way of teaching/explaining techniques, but they are very helpful each step of the way. I've taken BJJ and Muay Thai at PMA and was completely satisfied with the teaching, the facility, and the coaches. The BJJ coach Ed was knowledgeable and patient and made sure everyone understood what was supposed to happen. The Muay Thai coach Pete pushed us to be better. He helped each one of us fix the mistakes we were making to help us become more proficient. Both of these coaches also made everyone feel like they had a family at the facility. My son has been training here since 2009/12 years. He started out as an insecure little 7-year-old who cried a lot & has developed into a BEAST. We've shopped around, visited other gyms. We've been to several tournaments over the years & have seen first hand how PMA continously outperforms other gyms. You cannot beat the skills taught here. No one else in the central valley compares. On top of that, they promote honor & integrity among their students. Not all gyms have these values-- We've looked. My son's teammates are his family. If I died tomorrow, I know the PMA team would look out for him. They have gone above and beyond to support, coach and mentor my son. They even wrote to him while he left for his Army Reserve training. He's a 19-year-old college freshman at CSUF with plans to be a nurse. A few of his teammates are RN's & continously offer guidance to my son on his career path. He has grown so much & has cultivated such valuable relationships here at PMA. It's a tough gym - I can't say it'll be easy for your kids or for yourself, but the students who train here learn REAL martial arts skills. That's an irreplaceable outcome. read more
