It's upstairs from the main (very touristy) shop, and the ladies section (which is where I visited) features name brand clothing, an amazing selection of shoes, accessories, jewelry, and all sorts of cool stuff. I could have spent hours (and much, much money) here if only I had extra room in my cruise suitcase. Alas, I was only browsing. The staff was friendly and super helpful, too. A woman on the cruise ship had told me about this place, and that she liked to call ahead and the shop staff would pull outfits for her to try on - wow, talk about service! Prices were a bit high, but that's to be expected in Alaska. When I return to Ketchikan on my next cruise, I'll definitely stop here (and plan to bring an extra suitcase along too)!

If you show up in September they have some pretty good end of season sales happening. There are two locations in Ketchikan and they are walking distance from each other. Maiden Voyage is owned by a young lady who goes to yard sales, estate sales and the like in Ketchikan and the neighboring areas and gets items to sell at her store. The pleasant clerk that chatted with us explained this. So many strange and interesting things in this store. From gorgeous oil paintings of the harbor to vintage jewelry to tin signs to a skull necklace to rocking chairs to chest of drawers to the American flag art made with shells to books to plates, this shop sells you Ketchikan. Many nautically themed things are for sale here like shells, glass floats, ship paintings, earrings that look like Mermaid jewelry - no idea what kind of metal but no other way to describe it, see pictures. The items slither out the door onto the porch so check out the full area.

While in Ketchikan, I wasn't necessarily looking for something in particular, but I wear a plain…read moresilver chain and thought it might be nice to get a silver charm for it. When I walked into Orca, the owners were immediately friendly and asked if there was something I was looking for. I told them I was looking for a pendant, preferably silver, and they directed me to their cases with pendants. And that's where I saw it. A gorgeous onyx whale tail set in silver with a turquoise "midnight sun" and opal insets, some of which represented the northern lights. I love Alaska and have vacationed by cruise 3 times and by land at least half a dozen times. Whale watching is always a top priority for things to do in Alaska, and I've spent many sub freezing nights in Fairbanks out photographing the auroras. So this was literally the perfect pendant for me. There were large and small ones, but I really like the small because I'm not a very flashy person. There were more in that size than just those in the case, and I was able to look at all of them and decide which one I wanted the most. The pendant is hand made and signed by the artist, and you could tell how proud the owners of the shop were to offer a piece that wasn't mass manufactured. There was no hard sell, but there didn't need to be. I knew I was buying. As we wrapped things up, they decided that my wife Cathy should have something special as well and gave her a wooden whale tail that a friend of theirs hand-carved. It now resides on our display shelves here at home and will always be a reminder of our cruise. It really couldn't have been a better shopping experience.

The boat was comfortable and the small group setting made the whole experience feel relaxed and personal. We saw so much wildlife: whales, bald eagles, jellyfish, crabs, a mink sprinting along the shore, and a bunch of harbor seals lounging on the rocks. We also saw several types of birds that the couple was keeping track of for a wildlife database. They are super knowledgeable and clearly love what they do.
