Renting a 4x4 from Hollis Adventure Rentals was a streamlined process. Our truck was in the ferry parking lot waiting for us, nice and clean, and with all the promised gear he mentions. Having an extra map and binoculars is nice, even though you'll likely have your own. Dealing with Darren was great, and he was always happy to answer any questions we had about exploring the island. He's professional, smart, knowledgeable, friendly, funny and he has his act together. His attention to detail is 5 star. My buddy and I recently visited POW and one of the highlights was meeting Darin and renting "Seeweed" the green Toyota truck from HAR. HAR and Darin are wonderful. Darren is a one-of-a-kind individual that I am fortunate to have met. He understands customer service and customer satisfaction as well as anyone I have dealt with. He knows that for most of us this is our yearly vacation and we are escaping the rat race to get away from it all and he helps you ensure that nothing is left to chance. We rented "Bart" (great truck), a boat, 2 kayaks, fishing gear, chairs, bed rolls and full camping gear for our adventure on POW Island. Darren recommended all the things we should and shouldn't bring and helped us work out all the details of the trip. He and his wife are so nice and they thought of everything. All the equipment was in great working order and there were backup systems in place for everything in case we had issues (spare key for truck, two motors on boat, extra gas can, etc.). I was blown away looking at Darren's review score on google because he has 59 reviews with 5 stars. That is very unique and a testament to what great people they are and what an amazing job he does running his company. For the price, the vehicle, personal service, and support from HAR was fantastic! The Subaru Forester was 15 years old, but clean, repainted, had a recently rebuilt engine, ran very well over POW's bumpy, potholed paved and gravel roads, and carried 2 of us comfortably (3 was a tighter squeeze) and our gear everywhere we wanted to access for salmon fishing on the Island. Gas mileage was above average, and pick-up & drop-off was a breeze. There were no engine or vehicle problems over the 9-day rental. I did not rent extra equipment like kayaks, etc., from HAR, but ran into several other HAR rental vehicles/parties while on POW, and they were very happy with the choices they made. Hollis Adventure Rentals is the best car rental services we had ever used. I have designed our Alaska vacation well in advance reserving a small car for us. Once Darren heard that we are planning to go to El Capitan Cave, he immediately offered to upgrade the car to a small truck with no additional charge explaining that the road is not a paved road. He brought the truck to Coffman Cove to meet us in spite of the fact that Coffman Cove is two hours drive from Hollis. Most of our communication was done via email, with all prices and fees well stated in advance. The rental price and fee for the car delivery was very reasonable (considering the fact that it is Alaska after all). There were many extras in the car, most of those we did not use, however, the map and the cooler were in full use and the remote satellite communication device gave us peace of mind. This is my second year in a row to rent from Darren. I initially rented from him based solely on price, and hoping the reviews and my discussion with him about his business were accurate. They were and he was. Both his vehicles and recreational equipment were in great condition. I found that my pickup was clean and well maintained, both inside and out. Most, if not all, of the pickups come with canopies, giving you a dry place to store you personal items and fishing gear.Being located in Hollis, where the ferry lands, there is no transportation cost. You will find your vehicle waiting in the parking lot. Another plus, is his practice of not requiring you to send him a monetary deposit to secure your rental. Her has you answer the questions on his website, and e-mail them to him as a requirement to secure the rental. Please, be thoughtful and inform him asap if you decide to not or cannot rent from him. Thus ,enabling him to rent it to someone else, in an area where there is often times more request than vehicles, especially when historically the fish are in the rivers.
