During GW's midterms and finals weeks it also offers free coffee and hot chocolate 24 hours a day; just bring your own cup. The lounge on the second floor is a great place to take a study break and hang out while browsing some children's books. There's also a computer lab outside the main library area with copiers and printers. More desktops, copiers, and printers can be found in the library's lobby and yet another computer lab by the lobby. The big tables by the window on the first floor are good for people watching (occasionally distracting, of course, but mind-refreshing). There are also rotating art exhibits in the lobby throughout the year. My only complaint would be the limited hours outside midterms and finals times. It closes very early on Fridays and over the weekends. There's of course free wifi, though I'm not sure if you can access it if you're not a GW library patron.

Eckles has 3 computer labs (one open 24-hours) and Wi-Fi throughout the building and campus for GW students. There is also 50 cent coffee, cappuccino and hot chocolate if you bring your own cup. Eckles is open until 3am Sun-Thurs and is easily accessible from GW's Foggy Bottom campus via a free, 10 minute bus ride on The Vern Express.

Amenities - None of the outlets for the desks work, and the molding on them prevents most stuff being plugged in anyway. I had to crawl under the table and remove the desk plus and use the floor plugs directly. Setting - Terrible, the staff do nothing to enforce a good library setting conducive to reading and studying. It's always incredibly loud, lots of screaming kids, and just obnoxious people talking full volume, laughing out loud, or big meeting groups humming around. They let homeless people sleep and malinger around all over the place and it STINKS. Cleanliness - Disgusting, the floors and surfaces are always very dirty and the bathrooms are third world. Shit smeared everywhere, USED TP all over the place, broken soap dispensers off the walls never replaced, never any paper towels, etc. I also witnessed a homeless guy doing drugs off the sink. Comfort - Need more comfy seating. Only a few soft seats and none with feet support or reclining. Most of the chairs are very hard and the desks/tables are set too low. Staff - Seems overall to be friendly but very aloof.

One problem I've been experiencing frequently is that almost 50% of the time when I'm returning more than 5 books to the counter, at least 1 book will get marked as not returned even though I did return it. It's just a bit inconvenient to have to call the library to report that. they ll do a search and have always fount it eventually. The only other library I normally go to is central and this has only happened once at central.

I brought home many a craft, including a bubble blower made of a Styrofoam cup, washcloth, rubber band, straw and Palmolive. My little brother drank it by accident. Thank goodness he didn't eat the construction paper pig I made! We also had summer reading challenges on which we dutifully recorded the books we read on a poster and turned the poster in at the end of the summer for Pizza Hut coupons. Now, my favorite haunt is the Central Library when I'm back to visit...it's more spacious, has more parking and has more resources, but Cherrydale always holds a special place in my heart.

The couple most closely associated with this Georgetown estate, Mildred and Robert Bliss, clearly loved and thought deeply about this parcel of land when they owned it (1920/30's). Their efforts to preserve and share the space with the public are to be commended. It must have been quite something in its heyday. There's a lot of research that's supported here, as well as other activities. The website explains all that. It's a low-key sightseeing spot; quiet, contemplative.

They have quite a few notable collections that I liked. The Byzantine Collection featured different artwork from the fifteenth cwntury. There were also several large sculptures that originated from the Byzantium empire which is known as Istanbul today. According to their information, the museum is continuously acquiring different works if art from this time period. There were also some pretty cool grave markers dating back to the 11th century. The museum is sort of hidden off of the main avenue in Georgetown so you will probably need to search for it. It is also free and open most days to the general public.
