Community Centers are the heart of their community. They offer classes, exercise, can be rented out…read morefor events, and they can even give a helping hand through their many programs staffed by city employees. A good community center offers varied opportunities for its residents of all ages. A shining example of a great community center is the Wellington Community Center which is located in Wellington's Town Center, between Village Hall and the Aquatics Complex. The Wellington Community Center offers a variety of classes and programs for youth, adults, and seniors that include art, fitness, health and wellness, community education, and more. The community center also has both indoor and outdoor facilities which can be rented for private evens. One of my favorite things about this community center is the scenic views of Lake Wellington and the Town Center Promenade. I came to the Wellington Community Center for an art show by the African American artists known as The Highwaymen. They were a group of artists around the Fort Pierce area who quickly created Florida folk art featuring landscapes from oil paints on Uppson board used as roof sheeting. From 1950-1980 they would anonymously sell the art out of the trunks of their cars on A1A and US 1 from Daytona to Miami. At the time the art could be purchased inexpensively but the paintings have grown significantly in value. I love the nature scenes which are the subject of the paintings. Many feature blazing red Royal Poinciana trees, sunsets, and native birds. I love seeing Florida through their eyes. I was so pleased to attend this excellent and free art event at the Wellington Community Center.

And these bands play like professionals. Well they are professional. Because, they get paid to play. And they travel to different events and play their music. I must say they are pretty good. Plus, Wellington Community Center have an amphitheater, and a professional team. That do the lighting, the sound and it's very professional. Also, it's a very friendly place and crowd. Just sitting on the lawn, listening to old school music. The bands play tribute to artists from the past. The food trucks are amazing, well the whole event is a great time and relaxing. Thank you to the Wellington Community Center for a great and relaxing evening! I give it a five (5) stars rating

I had previously heard that this post office was supposed to be relocated but that hasn't happened yet.

Inside there is an information area and a place to get and pay for building permits as well as pay for beach parking permits and anything else you may need to do in a governmental city hall building.

I enjoy exploring the architecture of the historic districts of West Palm Beach. There are twelve…read morehistoric districts mar\ked by blue historical markers. These historic districts were created when Henry Flagler brought the railroad to West Palm Beach. The Belair Historic District is between South Flagler Drive and South Dixie Highway. It is bounded by Plymouth Road on the south and Pilgrim Road to the north. Belair was developed from 1925 to 1935 as a neighborhood where the tradesmen and real estate salesmen who helped build and develop Palm Beach County lived. In 1885 South Carolina author James Woods Davidson acquired the area as part of a Homestead Act. He in turn sold the land to early pioneer, Englishman Richard Hone. Hone turned it into a pineapple plantation and he and his wife Mary lived in a frame vernacular home at 211 Plymouth Road. In 1902 Hone was shot to death at the age of 43 during a storm while writing a letter at his dining room table as his wife sat beside him. One of Hone's employees was caught a few days later and charged with the murder. He was hung for the crime in Miami. In 1985 the grave of Richard Hone and his infant sons Edward and Robert were discovered beneath the Norton Museum of Art where they still lay today. After the Hone murder, the property was sold in 1923 to William and Sophie Ohlhaber to grow coconut palms and ferns. George Curie platted the land for a subdivision and sold off in lots. The Ohihaber's owned the first house built, a mission-style home at 205 Pilgrim. In 1947 Hone's house was bought by Max Brombacher, Henry Flagler's chief engineer, and it remains in the Brombacher family today. Homes in this neighborhood were built after WWI during Florida's land boom years in the 1920's and early 1030's. Architectural styles include Mediterranean Revival, Mission Revival, and Wood-Frame and Masonry Vernacular style houses. Belair became West Palm Beach's fourth historic district in August 1993. Historic Marker F-1201 was installed in 2022 by the South End Neighborhood Association and the Florida Department of State. You can find it in the swale next to the lake Worth Lagoon.

I love historic architecture, especially Mediterranean Revival from the 1920's. That is why I was…read moreso excited to find this ornate building on Federal Hwy in Boynton Beach. After looking around I was delighted to find that it contained one of my favorite civic organizations, a woman's club. In the 1920's women's clubs were formed to give back to the community. They became a way for women to get out of the house and assert their independence. They allowed women to get involved in politics and launched the women's rights movement. The Boynton Beach Woman's Club was formed in 1908 when a group of civic minded women met in the school house to form a club to improve the town. The club was formerly organized on October 19, 1909 and incorporated in 1911 when they joined the Florida's Federation of Women's Clubs. The first club building was a structure built from salvaged ship wrecks. The club eventually outgrew their first building and sold it in 1924 for $10,000. At that time the heirs of Major Nathan Smith Boynton offered to give $35,000 towards a new building for the club as a memorial to their father if the club could raise the rest of the money. The Mediterranean Revival building was designed by my favorite architect Addison Mizner who offered to draw the plans for free. The ornate Mediterranean Rival Style was very popular in Florida during it's land boom years in the 1920's. The firm of Heaton and Adams did the construction for a cost of $50,000 and the building was completed in the fall of 1926. On April 16, 1932 the cornerstone of the building was laid and it was dedicated to Nathan Smith Boynton. The building served as the town's first public library until 1961. It also provided meeting space for churches and civic organizations. Shortly after the building was completed it served as a hurricane shelter. During World War II the Red Cross and the USO used the building as a center. In 1979 the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Mizner Foundation repaired the building in time for the Diamond Jubile in 1986. In 2014 the building was added to the Boynton Beach Register of Historic Places in 2014. The Boynton Beach Women's Club continues to occupy this building today. The building can be rented for weddings and private events. The Boynton Woman's Club supports numerous charities, gives scholarships, and holds events which can be found on their online calendar. They continue to do charitable work today in their gorgeous historic clubhouse. Check them out to see their community outreach.

This is a segregation era cemetery that is believed to date to the 1950's. In 1957 is was platted…read moreby Brockway, Weber & Brockway, Engineers, of West Palm Beach. The City Commission asked the African-American community for input in naming the cemetery and they chose to name it after Sara Sims (1863-1958), a community activist who helped found the St. John Missionary Baptist Church in 1908. She is buried in this cemetery. The first recorded burial took place in 1958. This cemetery contains a mosiac grave marker which is an example of folk art. It is the only one in the city. The City of Boynton Beach designated this land as a cemetery in the early 1970's. It is a stop on the Historic Cemetery Trail. There is an interpretive sign posted explaining the history of the site. Few grave markers exist because many of the people buried here were indigent residents of Palm Beach County between 1988 and 1994. There aren't complete records of who is buried here. The last burial took place in 2004. When the city redeveloped Sara Sima Park next door in 2010 they also fixed up the cemetery and installed a new fence. It is nice to see that they city took care of this cemetery that is important to this community.
