On a recent visit to West Palm Beach, I stopped by to pick up a free copy of the official visitor and business resource publication. It's a great resource for learning more about the area, including local services, hospitality and leisure, cultural institutions, scenic beaches, restaurants, and notable landmarks. If you can't make it to the Chamber in person, the publication is also available to view online for free. You can also view networking events on their website. It is nice to know that an organization that has been helping shape the Palm Beaches for more than 100 years is still going strong today and shaping the future of the Palm Beaches.

But whatever, there's a ton of chambers in palm beach, so here goes my take on this one. This chamber is insanely organized. Their calendar of events is always up to date, and the members/ambassadors are all very friendly and helpful. I started going here with the business builders. It's a free networking event they hold a few times a month, and membership isn't required which is awesome. You register online, show up a little early, mingle a little, then the hosts kelly- starts the show. Everyone has a minute to stand up and introduce themselves & what they do. Then the next 30-40 minutes are about what the chamber does, how it works and benefit summary of membership. It's really a small price to pay to meet the attendees. Parking is a little tight, but not really an issue. There's a consistent flow of new and existing members, so it's definitely worth attending. I myself have already picked up a few clients from these meetings, so suck it up and utilize the morning hours to Kelly's 101s and "ships" (partnerships, relationships, other ships, etc)

I have to say, it's amazing to see. Best of all its lead by the Supervisor of Elections herself, Wendy Sartory... and she is impressive! You have to register for a tour, and they are only given at certain times... it's really well worth it if you have an interest in our elections in Florida. It's really well organized and very professional. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I came to see the historical home diagonally across the street and found this "castle" waterfront…read morehome as well. It's called La Florentia and nicknamed the "Birthday Cake Castle". It sits directly on the intracoastal waterway on a much bigger piece of property. It's related to architect Mizner, as well, being done by a protege of his. From the street and through the gates, it's hard to tell why it was nicknamed the birthday cake. There are supposed to be pillars that look like candles and other touches reminding you of frosting. Unfortunately with all the "no trespassing" signs, I couldn't get as close as I'd have liked to do so. This was an added "perk" of my trip in the historic district. Second of all this has to be the worst housing authority I've come across- so bad that I ended up forfeiting my voucher!!! Riesa A Lowery the portability specialist as she calls herself is a cruel unfair heartless woman who could care less about anyone who isn't of her RACE! Now normally I wouldn't say such a thing but what she did to me needs to be known. She waited 48 days from when my packet was received to issue me an appointment and that was only after I had a social worker step in. She fails to answer calls or emails for weeks on end. When I got there it was a side show circus of the low of the low. We were all dragged into a classroom after being given recert packets that normally you get in the mail before the day of appointment- rushed to fill them out in front of about 13 families and were to pass our social security cards and licenses around a room full of people. We were then called one by one to the back of the room where everyone else could hear our business and was yelling and running in and out the door like this was a social club . All other families except mine were African American - I'm Caucasian my husband hispanic we had our child with us who had to see this nonsense- I was the first one in and the last one out. Many people didn't bring their required paperwork I however did- those who didn't caused some disruption causing everyone else to sit and listen to the screaming for 3.5 hours!!! By the time they got to me it was 4:28 and Riesa said she doesn't get paid a min past 4:30 so she told me to sign papers without reading them! As to say I received them!! and agreed to terms I never heard of before which is BS! Then for me questioning her as to how this isn't fair that I traveled so far and wasn't even really seen she gives me a $1000 voucher for a 2br when I'm supposed to get $1200 as per the website. Everyone else got the website amount but me. Then I asked if she was gonna reissue my voucher being I only had 12 days to find a place now and she said no. Mind u she was the one who wasted my voucher time by not telling me how much my voucher was before arrival and wasting 48 of my 60 days! She was very rude and disrespectful to me. In floridas market right now there is nothing for $1000! Unless u move to the "first 48" and plan to be robbed and killed. I told her I felt I was being treated unfairly and she didn't care she told me if I don't like it why don't I just give up my voucher and then I could do or go wherever I want. That's real professional! She told me that any packet I turned in to move she would deny if it was one dollar over $1000. She left me unable to find a place before returning 10 days later to my home state. She first approved all my income and papers and then turned around for me asking for her supervisors number and said now she wanted 6 months of bank and paypal statements which were hard to get without a computer and printer out of state! I had brought the requested 3 months with me. Needless to say even working with 3 real estate agents I found nothing! My voucher has run out now and still not one phone call or email from her! I'd advise not to port to this office! 10 years I had section 8 with no issues! I come here and basically lost my voucher in a weeks time!!! The place is dirty the staff are a bunch of inconsiderate people the supervisor could care less took 4 days for him to call me back! I reported this woman and this agency to HUD for investigation as to housing discrimination . I looked up ms Lowerys Facebook after my realtor brought it to my attention she's one racist lonely woman who has the nerve to look down on people who need help when she has an $8000 goal on a go fund me page for a trip to Orlando lol!!! I'm now on my own and idk what I'm gonna do. But I'm gonna fight till she no longer has a job! So much for trying to have a better life and build self sufficiency . I wasn't about to end up somewhere worse than where I came from when there are so many complexes in nice places that would have took my voucher IF she gave the right amount! What she gave me is equivalent to a 1br and we have a 9 year old son! Go elsewhere trust me or u may risk ending up losing your housing for real!!!

The Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce is a non profit organization that is 111 years old. Their mission is to advocate for the business interests of Delray Beach by providing tools and opportunities for small businesses to thrive. The Chamber of Commerce offers events every month like Teapot Tuesday, Wine Down Wednesday, Pinball for a Purpose, and a Fall Market You can get more information about dates and times of events on their website. They also have two visitor centers, this one on the first floor of the Old School Square Garage and a second one across the street from the beach on Atlantic Avenue. The visitor's center is only open during the week but I had a few hours off one day and was able to stop in to get information on different events going on in the city. Even if the Chamber of Commerce is closed there are racks out front with magazines and other event information that you are free to grab. Right now the Greater Delray Chamber of Commerce is promoting their 3rd Annual We are Delray Event. The theme is a circus with "The Greatest Chamber on Earth" on Thursday, November 14, 5:30-8:30pm at Throw Social. There will be a magic show, juggler, mime, sword swallower, fortune telling, and other entertainment. Raffle tickets are on sale for "The Greatest Prize on Earth" valued at $5,000 from area businesses. One raffle ticket is $100 and five tickets are $200. Whether you're a business owner or a resident, stopping by the Chamber of Commerce can plug you into this vibrant, cultural city.

They helped me up and walked me inside while my friend went to get her car to pick me up. They gave me a bottle of water and kept coming over to see what they could do to help me. I just wanted to acknowledge their kindness and my appreciation. They definitely represent the beautiful city of Delray Beach in an excellent way.

I enjoy exploring the architecture of the historic districts of West Palm Beach. There are twelve…read morehistoric districts mar\ked by blue historical markers. These historic districts were created when Henry Flagler brought the railroad to West Palm Beach. The Belair Historic District is between South Flagler Drive and South Dixie Highway. It is bounded by Plymouth Road on the south and Pilgrim Road to the north. Belair was developed from 1925 to 1935 as a neighborhood where the tradesmen and real estate salesmen who helped build and develop Palm Beach County lived. In 1885 South Carolina author James Woods Davidson acquired the area as part of a Homestead Act. He in turn sold the land to early pioneer, Englishman Richard Hone. Hone turned it into a pineapple plantation and he and his wife Mary lived in a frame vernacular home at 211 Plymouth Road. In 1902 Hone was shot to death at the age of 43 during a storm while writing a letter at his dining room table as his wife sat beside him. One of Hone's employees was caught a few days later and charged with the murder. He was hung for the crime in Miami. In 1985 the grave of Richard Hone and his infant sons Edward and Robert were discovered beneath the Norton Museum of Art where they still lay today. After the Hone murder, the property was sold in 1923 to William and Sophie Ohlhaber to grow coconut palms and ferns. George Curie platted the land for a subdivision and sold off in lots. The Ohihaber's owned the first house built, a mission-style home at 205 Pilgrim. In 1947 Hone's house was bought by Max Brombacher, Henry Flagler's chief engineer, and it remains in the Brombacher family today. Homes in this neighborhood were built after WWI during Florida's land boom years in the 1920's and early 1030's. Architectural styles include Mediterranean Revival, Mission Revival, and Wood-Frame and Masonry Vernacular style houses. Belair became West Palm Beach's fourth historic district in August 1993. Historic Marker F-1201 was installed in 2022 by the South End Neighborhood Association and the Florida Department of State. You can find it in the swale next to the lake Worth Lagoon.

I…read morelove historical buildings and will take the time to read a historical sign whenever I find one. Today while visiting downtown Lake Worth I spotted one I had never seen in front of the town hall. The sign commemorates that the Lake Worth City Hall sits on the site of the first town hall that was built in 1915. The first town hall was school that was converted into a town hall in 1928. It was damaged in the Okeechobee hurricane of 1928 which caused the levee around lake Okeechobee to break. 2,500 people lost their lives and the area was plunged into a severe economic decline during the Great Depression. At first city hall operations were moved to the Lauriston Building at the intersection of Lake Avenue and Dixie Hwy. A new building was designed in a Spanish revival design by architect Floyd Kind at the end of 1928 and the building was completed in 1929. That building was used a city hall until 1973 when operations were transferred to the current city hall between Lake Avenue and Lucerne Ave. It is now used as the Lake worth historical museum. The current town hall once held an auditorium that held 350 people on the third floor. That is why the front of the building still bears the words municipal auditorium. The building is characterized by it's Moorish towers. It was designed by G.Sherman Childs who came to the area in 1913 to work for Addison Mizner until he opened his own firm. It was built to be hurricane resistant to provide shelter since the Great Hurricane of 1928 was still fresh in everyone's memory. The building ran out of money while it was being built due to the economic hardship of the Great Depression. Local businesses pitched in and the building was dedicated on November 28, 1935. The basement and first floor rooms were used for gatherings. During WWII the basement was used to host the Lake Worth USO. In 1953 the Lake Worth Playhouse began performances in the building. It closed in the 1970's. Today the building is still in use and holds all of the city service departments. I love the architectural design of the building. It represents the history of Lake Worth while it steers it's future.
