My wife and I had the pleasure of purchasing a significant art glass sculpture from Palm Beach Modern Auctions (PBMA). The art glass sculpture was from Stephen Rolfe Powell, an artist that we collect. This particular piece did not receive any bids during the live October auction. When we contacted the auction house to understand if there were any condition issues, we learned that many interested parties may not have wanted to tackle the packing and shipping of a sculpture that was as large as this one, in addition to it being VERY delicate. While we were discussing the sculpture, Rico, the owner and auctioneer, spotted one of his 3rd party packers (Mustafa, owner of UPS Store #7500) and they discussed in real time how this sculpture could be packed (packing to be on site because moving it could result in breakage). I knew of a small company that specializes in handling the shipping of delicate works such as this (Bryant Martin of The Moverman). In the end, we were able to solve the packing and shipping in less than 48 hours. We also agreed to a price. Payment was made, packing was executed, accompanied by time - date stamped pictures showing each stage of packing (the box was taller than me and I am 5' 7"). PBMA held the packed sculpture, and my shipper picked the item up, delivered the sculpture to my house, and unboxed it for me without issue (I live in the Atlanta suburbs). We won't deny that we were nervous through the whole experience, as the chance for breakage was real....but in the end, the awesome, and I do mean awesome, packing job of Mustafa and his team (I think it took 3 of them to wrap and pack this up) and the "soft" touch of The Moverman brought a beautiful piece to its new home. We had a good experience selling thru this auction house. Dropping off our pieces, I was surprised to find the location and setting to be neither modern nor especially attractive. Certainly not Sotheby's. Still, the lots presented were especially high end and an impressive collection surely to draw a refined and monied clientele. We were not disappointed. One of our pieces sold for over twice estimate. And payment came via mail within 3 weeks after sale. All of our commutations were handled professionally and promptly. read more

I have been bidding at auctions all over the world and this auction house is one of the most unscrupulous houses I have ever worked with. When asking for additional information on a piece of Italian glass I was considering buying, the response was slow and evasive up until the time to bid. The information I did get was deceptive and incomplete as to vetting the piece. After receiving the piece, I submitted professional photographs to three leading authorities on Italian glass, and all of them agree that the glass is fraudulent. Palm Beach Modern Auctions now refuses to return my money claiming "caveat emptor;" I should have known and what they sell is "as, where is". However, caveat emptor does not apply where deception is in play and it certainly is in this case. I intend to sue them; which is the only way I will get resolution with these dishonest sellers. read more

Although I did not get up the auction taking place today I know that I am able to view lots on line. I really enjoyed the auction May 25th. I was treated very nicely when I wanted to view a lot during its live auction and thought they worked very hard to curate. They deserve much credit for the quality of their curation however with Palm Beach so close we all deserve a treat. Furniture was deep, lighting, paintings were plentiful and much of the work moved. All items had provenance and were fully described. The high price was for a painting which I believe sold for around $110,000 to low end was at about $100 for ceramic pottery. As a buyer one can walk through and touch any item for sale and appreciate the sellers end knowing how stressful it is for a collector to start selling off their collections. You can register when you enter off the street + get a paddle and bid as you like quickly. I encourage folks to support these auctions. I would recommend any persons who have an estate to sell to consider using a dealer / auction house such as Palm Beach Modern Auctions. They will bring you national and potentially international exposure and if you attend they will feed you charcuterie, champagne and chocolates to pass the time between lots for sale. The neighborhood is historically filled with antique dealers and this a a stand out as a scholar of modern art. What is one man's junk is another's treasure... so get those old fashion sketches appraised. read more

Nasty. Disrespectful. Stay away. Used their own online app to bid on some items during their May 2 auction because neither I nor anyone could go in person due to COVID-19. Auction house insisted on charging an additional 5% premium (on top of the 25% they already charge) for using their own online platform. To reiterate, this is their own App (not invaluable or Live Auctioneers). Rico Baca, the owner, instead of having a calm conversation, insisted in belittling me when I asked them to make a concession when I was ready to pay. He refused, told me "you're not special" and that I should have submitted an absentee or a phone bid and ultimately hung up on me. It is strange to me that this business, which is not defined as an essential business, was able to conduct an auction during the PBC Emergency Order. Also, very strange that this auction house charges an additional 2.5% for using a credit card to pay when Florida Law, 501.0117 states, in part: Credit cards; transactions in which seller or lessor prohibited from imposing surcharge; penalty.-- (1) A seller or lessor in a sales or lease transaction may not impose a surcharge on the buyer or lessee for electing to use a credit card in lieu of payment by cash, check, or similar means, if the seller or lessor accepts payment by credit card. A surcharge is any additional amount imposed at the time of a sale or lease transaction by the seller or lessor that increases the charge to the buyer or lessee for the privilege of using a credit card to make payment. read more

Unscrupulous people. When I purchased a chest of drawers with a very good condition report only to find out that the bottom 3 drawers did not close properly after receiving it accross the country, the owner had no interest in taking any responsibility for the misrepresented condition. I have worked with dozens of auction houses across the country, and the customer service and integrity of Palm Beach Auctions is the worst I have encountered. i will never buy another thing from them. I love how easy it is to find out everything I want to know about their items before bidding. These are expensive vintage items, so it is important to me to have all the information before I bid. I called and they invited me to come by and preview. They're open before every auction for previews. I was able to view everything in person, plus they had a phone app that let me look at all the information about each piece right there on my phone.
