The only reason for the star is to be able to post the review! I was shocked at the attitude of the Panache owner. I visited the store on a Sunday afternoon - there were only a few people in the store when I got there - and I was immediately 'greeted' by the owner, informing me that I was not to pick up or touch anything in the store. With the exception of the jewelry, which I could try on. She also informed me proudly that she was the largest glass gallery on the East Coast. After a few minutes of browsing, she asked if there was anything that caught my eye. It was glass - it was all beautiful - and it all 'caught my eye'. I smiled and said I was still looking. I entered another room with larger, sculptural glass - and again, was asked if anything caught my eye. Now here is the thing - what 'caught my eye' was that no where was there any indication of who the artists were! If you own a glass gallery, and are proud of being the largest on the east coast, would you also want to work to inform your buying public????? When I asked about the maker of a specific glasswork, I was told I would be given that info after I purchased it! WHAT?????? I am a collector, not a gambler. When I buy a piece of art, I think I deserve to know up front that it is from the artist that I think it is, not some well executed derivative. To reassure me, the owner said that all of the artists in the room had at least 30 years of glassmaking experience. Here's what you can know about me - I am a glass artist - I have been for more than 20 years. I have a number of friends who are glass artists. I am also a collector. I sell my work through other large galleries. Those galleries are proud to represent glass artists, and eager to share as much information as possible about the artists. Panache: flamboyant confidence of style or manner. Recently a dear friend, visiting from NH and I, a native Mainer, met to spend what was, for the most part, a lovely mini vacation in Ogunquit enjoying some time away from the husbands, work and the general demands of life. On the drive into town, my friend had noticed this lovely yellow building and it's beautiful window displays and asked that we stop there on our tour of the shops in town. As the definition implies, Panache is certainly flamboyant with its bright, beautiful pieces including glasswork, jewelry and sculpture. And no one could argue that the staff is certainly confident in their manner. In fact, they are too confident. In fact, they are snooty. Like Chris M. in a previous review, a friend and I were greeted with the same instructions that we were to look and not touch. Unless, of course, we were interested in looking (read purchasing) a piece more closely. At which point we were to ask for assistance from a salesperson. Fair enough. With the hefty prices, it is understandable that they would like to avoid any costly accidents. My friend and I began to browse, stopping to admire some beautiful mirrors, one of which I almost succeeded in convincing my friend to purchase. Around the corner, as she considered another piece, we were asked by yet another salesperson if there was anything specific we were looking for. (She used that word, specific) I wondered to myself what, specifically, one might come looking for in a store such as this, claiming to have unique and high quality objets d'art. ("Yes, I am specifically looking for a very high brow soup ladel!"!?!?!?) Moving on to admire some jewelry we then asked yet a third salesperson about one of the pieces. She very quickly unlocked the case and brought it out and then, with absolute confidence and a straight face asked, "Are you in a buying mood today" Let me interject here by mentioning that my friend, had she been so moved, could have purchased one or several of any of the pieces in that store, and as I mentioned earlier, had actually considered a couple. However, her kneejerk reaction, upon being asked such a rude question was "No, I tend to wear just my everyday jewelry. It is beautiful though." The salesperson, upon hearing the answer tersely snapped the ring off the tray, placed it back in the case, locked the case and walked away. We quickly glanced over the rest of the inventory and left. And will never visit Panache again. Dear Panache: While your items are indeed beautiful,expensive, and well crafted by talented artists, your atmosphere is uncomfortable and your attitude is snooty. I visited the new location of Panache in Ogunquit, ME this weekend. Both the new building and the grounds are lovely, however, I will not visit again. The store is filled with beautiful, one of a kind, glass pieces and I truly appreciate the workmanship involved, but not the treatment I received as a guest/customer in this store. I truly felt like I was being followed as if I were a child that was not suited to be in the store; that I would be touching or breaking an item at any moment and I had to be watched. I, too, felt like another reviewer that the women who own/run the store are extremely snobby and perhaps felt I wasn't able to spend the money to make a purchase. If other visitors feel the same way, all the money spent on a beautiful building, lovely grounds and special merchandise will force them out of business. Customer service is a valued and appreciated commodity and one of the first rules of good management. read more

Terrible and rude. They turned me away at the door because I had a small stroller with a sleeping 4 month old baby inside. I was looking forward to getting a piece of jewelry to support a local artist, but I wasn't even allowed in. The woman who denied my entry stated that they don't allow strollers inside and asked me in a patronizing tone "have you ever been here before? We're a glass art gallery." I can assure you that if I am responsible enough to have two children, I am responsible and careful enough to maneuver a stroller with a perfectly peaceful and asleep infant into the front corner of your store to take a look at the jewelry nearby. They'd probably get a lot more business and be more successful if they worked on the way they present themselves and speak to their customers. Clearly not accommodating or respectful and certainly not family friendly. Very disappointing. read more

The glass pieces themselves were beautiful. The people who work there were atrociously rude. I don't believe I've ever been to a gallery or any store for that matter where the people who worked there were that inconsiderate. I feel sorry for the artists who place their work there as you get more flies with honey than with vinegar. This is a GREAT store to visit if you are looking for local artists' work and something that you cannot find in a catalog. I ended up buying a nice unique clock for myself, an beautiful oil lamp for my mom, and my girlfriend bought something for her mom. I definitely plan on visiting Panache each time I pass through Cape Neddick. If you are not an outlet mall sort of person and are looking for one-offs, this is the place to visit. My Parent's have been going to Panache for years. The art they sell there is beautiful!. The owners are lovely and very friendly. Although they have known my family for many years, I have seen them interact with other customers and they could not be more friendly. My 9 year old looks forward to shopping there every year. Although, I do not recommend bringing your kids unless you keep them by your side at all times. i was in there when a family let their kids wander around. Sorry - maybe I'm just not an "artsy" person but I did not find anything special about this place nor the art they sold - I found it expensive and pretentious and actually got into a little "tiff" with the owner the next day when we tried to return something. Pushy and unfriendly. As soon as we walked into the store, we were "greeted" with "Hi. Make sure you dont touch anything!" without even a hint of a smile by the owner who then walked right over to my mom and tried to put necklaces on her. My mom literally had to fend her off with repeated "no thank you"s and finally "NO. that is REALLY not to my taste". The women then hovered around us the entire time we were there, reminding us not to touch but asking what "caught our eye". Actually, everything caught my eye, but all for the wrong reasons. Every piece in the gallery looked like a super tacky wall monstrosity from 1982. Thoroughly put off, we left and waited outside for our ride to return (they went further down the street for an ice cream while we tried to shop). By the parking lot there was a gorgeous lavender barn with beautiful landscaping and a stone staircase around in the shade. we immediately walked over there to wait and my sister put her jacket down on the stairs. The woman came running out of the store and told her to move it because she spent 5 grand and a spring jacket would ruin it. We stared at her in complete disbelief - i don't understand how she expects to sell anything while being so awful. Long story short, i will NEVER go back there - even if i actually liked any of the wares in the gallery, i would never give her any business. We travel a great deal, and have been to countless galleries and fine craft shops. Panache is our favorite, and it's right in our backyard! We have been customers for years, following them to their new location. We always find unique, new pieces there. Artists which are new to us and out of the ordinary. The owners have been very helpful, even arranging for custom colors or sizes from their artists for a few items. The gallery is gorgeous, full of high caliber goods. Nothing else like it! Well, I have been spending wads of cash here on clocks, glassworks and even jewelry since their store was on route 1. All the clocks have broken. Glass art had held test of time pottery pieces nice but JEWELRY. I spent 4,000 on three pieces after listening to the sales pitches of owners who are hard core sales people who got to big for their own britches. Heard all the story about prices of silver going down etc. so went to get value. Ready? Not even 10.00! Rip off place for jewelry. I know glass artists and have dealt with both galleries and the artists. These folks are the worst I've seen. Rude, nasty, snobby. Would not tell me the names of the artists who did the pieces, unless you bought the piece. What are they trying to hide? Overwhelmingly, artists will not undercut their galleries. To think I could get a name of a piece I like and go directly to the artist and get a better price, doesn't happen. My wife wanted to dispose of a piece of tissue and they told her no, we have no receptacle and that she should walk down the block. That, after the thought I might actually buy something. Total turnoff, with extreme attitude. Bypass this place and do yourself a favor, though the artwork is very nice. Not worth the nasty experience, especially when they stand to make a decent return if you buy something , and for what, I haven't a clue. read more

Oobnoxiousness at its best-although,as a glass addict, I've purchased items in the past from this store , I always found the two women proprietors as somewhat haughty and aggressive-during my last visit, I simply inquired who the artist was for a glass piece which intrigued me-the owner's response was the name could not be provided until after the purchase was made --what foolishness and arrogance? do they expect customers to be so awe struck that they will purchase goods without even knowing the artist's name until after the purchase is made- try that in another art gallery which sells original paintings , such a stance would be laughable!!--although the owners may have a new gallery, their arrogance and business tactics are outrageous- I WILL NEVER SET FOOT IN THE GALLERY AGAIN!! read more

Second time we have stopped in this store and second time we found them unwelcoming (read on...). Perhaps if I had flashed a wad of 100 dollar bills, they might have been more friendly? They have truly lovely pieces, but they are so pretentious! First woman: "Have you been here before?" Me: "Yes, I love your store - such beautiful pieces." I walk into the side room which previously had been roped off at my other visit. First woman walks in with me. I see a fantastic piece and asked "where is this artist from?" She snootily states: "West Coast. We give you all the information on the artist when you purchase." Well fact is I like to know about the artist BEFORE I purchase and a sale could be better made with the artists story/background. I suspected at this point that they weren't interested in the art as much as the sale...I then look at another piece. First woman: "Is that something that would work with your home?" My fatal error: honesty. "No that is not in my budget". She then has roped me off in the room. I think she expected I was going to be a problem? Wth? When released, I said (again foolish little refugee from the poorhouse) "I just love to look at the beautiful art you have. It is like a gallery". First woman, snootily: "Well that is what it is." Duh - I meant the kind where they are not bound and determined to make a commission and sell you something! I really did like the artist and I saw something in the front room (after I was released from the back) and asked the woman "Is this by the same artist - the pieces in the front?" First woman: "Might be". No effort whatsoever... Not a buyer, don't expect the time of day. Fact is: it was only $300 and I would have considered it if she hadn't been such a pretentious snob. Second woman (after I left the shop): she comes barreling out of the store: "Excuse me - you can't go back there. Not landscaped, you could turn an ankle. We thought the No Dogs Allowed sign would keep people off." Well lady, most people don't consider themselves dogs! Me: "How old is this barn?" Second woman: "200" Bam! no more words for me! Final word: they should have used better stone for in front of the barn. That cheap cement "faux stone" does great disservice to the lovely barn with the purple door. read more

This Gallery provides a unique opportunity to see artwork and jewelry never seen before. They must seek out the best artists with different points of view than the "cookie cutter" crowd. We just got home from another vacation to Maine and our second visit to Panache. The landscaping outside was even better than the first time we stopped by. We really enjoyed seeing the glass items and jewelry beautifully displayed inside. My friend ended up buying a ring. I'm sorry that Bill & Reid had such a bad experience but I've been stopping in this shop at least once a summer for the last 4 years and I love this place. The "help" as they were referred as are the owners and yes they are diligent about the 'no handling or touching' rule but after my first visit there they never mentioned it again; in fact my second visit was a year later and they remembered me! that's the kind of customer service that impresses me and makes me return every summer. I'm free to wander the shop for as long as I want and they don't bother me except to offer help/advice/answers when needed. In fact I'm headed up to Ogunquit for the first time this summer tomorrow and can't wait to stop into their new location to check it out. I have been going to Panache for the past 4 years and have found Doreen to be extremely pleasant, professional and fun to work with. I have purchased 2 different custom pieces by working very closely with Doreen as she is the conduit with the artist. Her ability to convey the concept, color and texture of the piece allows the artist to envision what the customer is looking for and makes for a truly one of a kind piece of art. Both pieces arrived at my home in Connecticut in perfect condition as great care is taken in the packaging. I have never been treated so rudely in my life! Just finishing our honeymoon in Maine and wanted to buy something nice for our home to remember our wonderful trip. This store certainly has some wonderful pieces of local art, but do yourself a favor and buy it elsewhere as we did. Upon arriving at the store, after we kindly retrieved the owner's keys from the outside of the door, we were rudely told to make sure we touch NOTHING. Understandable, yes, said kindly, not even a little bit. I then wished to text a picture of a necklace to my sister in law to see if she would like me to purchase it as a gift for mom...This woman rushed across the store yelling at me for attempting to take the picture, then grilled me as to why I wanted it. After the third degree, I walked away. She continued following me! Even though upset, I still inquired about another item. She ignored that question and continued her line of questioning....I was blown away!! All she had to say was what any kind, tactful woman would have said, "The artists prefer that you don't photograph their work" . So thankful that I was able to find the exact same item I wanted at another wonderful little shop around the corner. For much less money and a smile I might add. read more
