First review here~ They are open for business! I do recommend calling ahead since Chau Shifu steps…read morein and out during the evening sometimes, he stays as late as 10pm on some days. Reason for visit: Sprained ankle from 3 days prior. Ankle: swollen to the size of half a baseball then the swelling transferred to my foot. Treatment duration: - 3 days at home with ice and topical Chinese medicine - 2 days at Chau Shifu's Cost: $60 per session The Experience: Day 1- He looked at my foot briefly and proceeded to prep the large sheet of medicinal ointment right away, wrapped it around my ankle and the top and bottom of my foot. Day 2- He used the lamp and first treated my foot for about 20 minutes with heat therapy. The lamp slowly heats up to a burning temperature, my foot was turning red and I can barely stand the pain from the heat. I mentioned it to him, he simply said "don't worry about that" and went back to chatting with his friend until my treatment was over. Then he applied the cool sheet of ointment over my foot. THAT felt good. He told me there is no need to elevate the foot but I felt like it made a difference for me so I elevated it at night when I went to sleep. Results: His treatment definitely works with moderate results, considering it takes weeks for a sprained ankle to heal. The swelling subsided a bit on both my ankle and foot and bruising began to form under my skin. It's getting there. I am now continuing treatment at home with heat therapy with my lamp at home and topical medicine.

The staff are considerate and they all make and effort to make sure the kids learn the moves properly. With all these good reviews I was afraid they ask people for them, but no one asked me for a review - I'm choosing to leave this because I want to support them.

Sifu Cindy took time to speak with me and answered all my questions and concerns before we even did the trials. I was concerned that the classes were short but they were high energy and my daughter left the first class sweating and excited. Fast forward a year and a half later, and my daughter went from whining and saying I hate kung fu to saying she wishes she could go to kung fu every single day. I can see that her confidence has grown in leaps and bounds over the months. She has not only learned discipline and how to do the moves but also how to use her voice. Her movements have gotten stronger and she is eager to learn more and work harder. I could not ask for more patient or nicer instructors in Sifu Cindy, Sifu Alex, and all of the instructors there. They do not let the kids get away with misbehaving but they also do so in a fun and engaging way, which is not easy to do. Their experience and love for the children and the art shows. A well run and professional school that is structured and fun. The kids love it and we are so happy that we found Five Animals!

Professor Lau taught the Hung Sing martial arts system beginning in Los Angeles at the Hop Sing Tong Association in the early 1920's, before officially establishing the school in San Francisco. The Hung Sing Association serves as an overseas representative for their headquarters located in Foshan, China. They teach the Hung Sing Martial Arts and Self Defense system here in the United States. Serving as the "oldest" Chinese Kung Fu school in the United States, the Hung Sing Association is recognized by all Chinese martial arts schools in the world. Currently, Dino Salvatera serves as the Association's President. He is also the leading authority for the Hung Sing martial arts system in the United States through the Professor Lau Bun lineage. I'm still considered a newb, noob (whatever) for the past six years, studying the Hung Sing martial arts system under GM Salvatera. It has been an honor and a privilege. Through this system, I've learned more than just the butt kicking kung fu you see in those English dubbed Chinese movies. I've learned about Chinese customs (like how to pour tea and hold chopsticks the Hung Sing way), culture through the sport of lion dance, and build a solid foundation which has helped me self persevere through life. There are people from all walks of life in this association. It doesn't matter if they are learning/physically disabled, doctors, lawyers, plumbers, teachers or have a different pigmentation of skin. Everyone in this association shares a similar interest of learning traditional martial arts while also enjoying it as a form of personal hygiene. If you ever get a chance, you should come and check this out! The Hung Sing Association of America teaches on a 1-on-1 basis since each person has a different method of learning, the environment is always friendly and welcoming. Kids seem to love it here too!

The coaches are skilled, personable, and really love to see when you're improving. Kru Sam is actually from Thailand and knows the traditions of the art and still goes back himself or sends students there regularly to train, which may be part of why he's trained so many champions. If you're looking to compete, a place to learn how to defend yourself, or even a place to get in a solid workout, give it a shot!
