Located towards the top end of a scuzzy-looking parade of shops, you'd be forgiven for turning back too soon and missing out on Cafe 2050 altogether. Walk those extra few steps though and you'll be rewarded by a little haven of calm off a busy main road. As you enter, a sideboard packed with pastries beckons, the scent of coffee lingers in the air and subtle dance music plays in the background. A mix of bleached and white wood serves for tables and chairs and pretty canvases adorn the walls. Foodwise, there's a more interesting variety than usual, with French and German breakfast platters as well as smaller snacks like toast, bagels and fruit and yoghurt. The lunch menu includes paninis, croque monsieur, home-made soup and quiche (specials change daily). So far so yummy, but it's the little things about a place that make me want to come back, and at Cafe 2050 one of those little things is the way they serve their jam: in a big jar with a spoon.
