Ordered two lattes, the Batman & Robin, the Lenny & Carl, a side of poutine fries and some pickles. We were the only ones waiting at the time, and everything was made to order which was good to see. However, the coffee beans weren't fresh and both coffees - one soy, one regular - were bland and luke warm, sort of tasting like warmed up milk. The sandwiches were much smaller than expected, based on photos from the Cheese and Bread social media pages. The Lenny & Carl was flavourless. It contains the "house cheese blend", bechamel and macaroni and cheese - however if you had told me it was just a singular cheese type in there, I wouldn't have been surprised. I guess I was expecting the usual American-cheesy flavour you'd get from macaroni and cheese, combined with a creamy bechamel. The Batman & Robin was slightly better, however - as my partner pointed out to me - the names of the sandwiches at Cheese and Bread follow a pattern of 'two things that go awesomely together', and the beef patty and beef slice were just okay, not awesome. The poutine fries were also lacking in flavour. The fries weren't salted, and there was barely any gravy or cheese. A good poutine should be smothered in gravy with cheese all through the fries, whereas this was maybe a small ladle of gravy with a sprinkle of packet tasty cheese on top. The person who served us was really friendly, and I suppose it was cool being able to have someone come take your order from you car and then make it on the spot, but the quality and flavour just wasn't there - and for $10 a sandwich, next time I feel the urge for a cheesy toasty, I'll use the money to go and buy more flavoursome ingredients and make it myself at home.

If you go on a weekday, have one of the "Coburg" sandwiches, which you can't get on weekends. They also have yummy desserts (marsbar cheesecake, mmmm) and fresh squeezed juices. The weekend menu has brunch classics (the french toast served with strawberries and walnuts is delicious) as well as Coburg-esque dishes, such as the toasted falafel sandwich. The staff are always friendly and there's lots of seating with spacious tables, so you can always settle down for a while and read or just people watch along Sydney Road.

There's six options to choose from, but why you'd get anything other than the "Half Moon" with chilli sauce I don't know. Think crispy felafels, salad, olives, pickles, hummus... wrapped in a warm pita and weighing almost the size of a small child. This whole thing will set you back a mere $8. Other than the fact that the food here is delicious and cheap, the owners and staff are really what make this a worthy experience worth crossing town for. Run by a family for the last 12 years, they're super lovely and really care about their customers. The "father" is so kind and will make a point of walking around the tables outside to check that his customers are happy, that they have enough napkins and that they're looked after. I love chatting to him and if I time my lunch break right I might be able to sit with him while he has his lunch break in the late afternoon. Customer service doesn't cost anything, yet there's not many places that get it right or enjoy it as this family does. 5 stars.

We arrived one busy lunchtime, and joined the line of people ordering kebabs. I went for the eponymous Half Moon sandwich, which was with falafels and salad. The woman taking our order at the counter asked us to take a table outside and the other would be brought out to us. I thought she was clever to be able to remember which order went where without any table numbers or tickets. It turned out she didn't have a clue, and our order was bounced around between 4 different tables before it was given to me. At one point, she even gave the order to me, then took it away, and then returned to hand it to me again! The sandwich itself was good value at $8, but no where near as large as others have suggested. I finished it without a problem, and I wouldn't consider myself to have a bigger appetite than most guys. The salad and sauce was nice, but the falafels were ordinary. I'd have preferred them to be crunchier on the outside and soft inside. The other disappointment was that they used packet pita bread rather than baking their own, as any proper restaurant in the middle east would do. Even so, if I were in Coburg again, I would return to Half Moon Cafe for lunch.

The seating area gets a delightful dose of sunshine in the mornings, and the plants growing above you add a nice touch. Where Sugardough stands up is through the consistency and crunch of their breads. They don't over produce, so you won't be getting left over stock at the end of the day. This can mean that they won't have exactly the variety you're after, but you know it's fresh and that's of far more importance. They also do great (and consistently so) coffee, cakes, pizza slices and have some of the best pies in Melbourne. Actually, it's the pies that get me going back now that I don't live in the area -- they've still got a bit of a grip on me...
