I needed to take more photos so posted a panicky message on Facebook. Ling, one of the other local Yelpers came to my rescue in seconds and suggested Jessops. Anyway, from the top of the Cube, I headed over to Jessops with a few diversions. There was a greeter on the door so I asked if anyone could help with my lens cap problem. The greeter then took me over to one of the counters, fiddled and prodded the lens for a while, looked perplexed then tried again giving it a huge tug and off it popped showing no signs of damage. This made me very happy as I'd only had the lens a couple of months! Top scoring for a quick and cost free service. PS I must go back to Jessops and have a look at their equipment later.

When my fabulous nail lady Beena moved premises to Tip Top and gave me directions, I was totally confused... "Which photography studio in the JQ?"... Once you have located it (there are signs outside) and climbed the staircase, you'll be greeted by one of the residents of the building. The studio is at the back of the set up with a bathroom, beauticians, office space and an agency all housed together. The studio itself is wonderful. Not huge, but set out with distinct areas for different styles of photoshoots. There is also a dressing room at the back for touching up your style pre-shoot. As well as product shoots, the studio do private shoots, themed event days (where live animals come into the studio), family shoots and photography courses. I'm pretty confident that you could become a Tip Top photographer yourself under the care of Debbie and Steve. This is a gem of a photography studio in the Jewellery Quarter. If you're looking to have some shots done, I thoroughly recommend it!

I discovered the studio recently, at an evening of photography and cocktails organised by Yelp. As part of the event we each got complimentary head shots taken by the Tip Top crew. I'm quite camera shy, especially in a room full of people, but the photographer and director were really friendly and professional and put me at ease quickly. I was advised on where to stand, in which direction to look and how I could pose, whilst the photographer snapped away. Shortly after the event I got one of the finished head shots by email - easy peasy! The studio is quite large and well equipped. They have a range of different backdrops and props for you to use, ranging from a scroll top bathtub to a tiny wooden horse. There's even a dedicated sprucing up area at the back, should you require a quick costume change. I would definitely recommend Tip Top to anyone who wants to get some professional photos taken. They are friendly and professional and it was a fun experience!

Palm have been a bit of a lifesaver. Me and my other half have recently decided to expand our…read moreinterests photographically into the world of medium format. Eventually I'm planning on creating our own mini darkroom in the basement of our office - but until that day comes, we'll be happily taking our negs to Palm to be handled with the level of care and reverence that is now extremely rare to find in any high street chains. The turnaround time is great - and the guys there are friendly and approachable, so you can let them know if you need something done sooner. I'm a skinflint, so tend just to get the film processed and a lo-res scan done.. ideally when we sort out our own mini darkroom, we'll also invest in a high quality scanner too. But until then, PALM - I LOVE YOU! (One thing to be wary of - there's no parking nearby, and the roads which are usually empty are double yellow lines. We tend to pull over, pop the hazards on (naughty, I know!) and one of us will wait in the car ready to move if need be. Which as yet, touch wood, hasn't happened!)

I trust Palms with my life (which my negatives pretty much are to me) and they not once have they let me down. They offer close t every service you can think of, from printing to scanning and even bookbinding. I've used them personally in almost every service they do and the results have been flawless each time. Time frame is often a problem in professional photography if you use film, clients have become used to all the benefits the digital age has brought us, including being able to instantly review work back. Palms turn around is amazing and can be as quick as next day if your willing to go down the more expensive express route. Palms technique and equipment is top end, like sending your film away to a five star hotel; you need to be willing to pay for the luxury of these services. A contact sheet with developed negatives normally costs me around £12.00 and prints start off around £2.00 (5x4). The prints and mounts they create are on great materials, again the price may seem high but surely you want the best for your work. I keep mentioning this in all my photography-based reviews but if we happened to loose this place we'd be done for, check it out and keep shops like this alive!

This was long before Fotofilia but the owner David Rann was the guy who first let me loose in a studio environment in his very first studio, and too this day one of the most upstanding professionals I know in the Birmingham photographic scene. Skip forward 7 years and here I am, still using David's studios, now known as Fotoflia. Fotofila is a studio/exhibition/photography education centre based in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. Though simple it is all it ever needs to be. From the front door your are greeted by a constantly changing exhibition which expands into a separate room and the hallway that leads into the studio. The studio is where all the training sessions are also held, sometimes with live shoots. Fotofila offer courses to people at all levels and the prices are insanely good for how much time and effort David puts into his classes. Now the studio it's self is basic with a black and white background on roll and the room is set up for a few different sets but all you will be using is the rolls I imagine. Depending what your into Dave keeps a stock of costumes an a few props in the makeup/changing room. What I like about the space is that if your like me and use long telefocal lens's, the room is perfect to standing way back and sniping those perfect shots at 150m in. They also go by the name of Elonex. The sales director is apparently Roger Carding and he says one thing and does another. Does not answer calls and it always out at meetings. This is a terrible company and is not to be trusted. If you ever get approached by them hang up immediately - it will save you months of pain and grief.

If you have a party, wedding, or event coming up then I recommend you go and speak to him. He really knows his stuff, will not try to oversell you something you don't need, and is reasonably priced. He called the shop 2007 Sound & Light when he opened it, because 2007 was when he planned to retire. If you use his services next time you need a PA then he might be able to put his feet up soon, and stop worrying about leaky showers overhead.

The staff were really friendly and gave me multiple suggestions with a detailed description of the pros and cons of each, and even let me try some of the laptops they had in the shop. Stephen was very knowledgeable and helped me through the process of choosing my laptop and now that I have my dream laptop I couldn't be happier.
