We sat inside to escape the heat but interestingly most of the customers opted for outdoor seating. Most of the staff were focused outside but eventually one came inside to take our order. While we waited we checked out the mash-mash of decor items, identified all the sites we visited on the painted Brussel cityscape and the wall of graffiti from prior diners. We tried one dish from the Belgian specialties list and a burger. Dishes were simple but not very satisfying in the end. The vol au vent was disappointing with a few small meatballs scattered around the plate along with 2 puff pastries covered with a creamy sauce. I wished for a lot more mushrooms or actual chicken meat to align with expectations for this traditional dish. The Irish beef burger was a very expensive one that really didn't have any distinctive flavors to speak of. Both dishes were served with a side of frites and not anywhere near the level of Belgian frites I expected. The cup contained mostly of limpy pieces like they waited around under a heat lamp before serving. In contrast, our salads were fresh and decent. There are better places to try out.

Panos is a chain bakery/sandwich shop and was recommended by one of the aunties. Stuff you can find here includes sandwiches, wraps, soups, sweet and savory pastries, individual loaves and rolls, salads, coffee, and hot chocolate. Super basic, but high-quality stuff compared to a lot of other chain bakery places we saw as we traveled through Europe. Some of those sweet pastries were just really fancy looking for what's supposed to apparently be a very basic place, while even the basic stuff tasted really delicious. Their croissants were also super delicious, and I thought the raspberry croissant was particularly interesting. This particular location is on the street branching just off Grote Markt (Grand Place) and just across from the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert's southern entrance. It was near where we were supposed to meet up with our tour group, so we dropped by very quickly to grab some breakfast. My chief memory of that morning was that their waffle honestly made me feel better about the first half of the day.
