Every eatery and store that had been there previously…read morehad failed, I didn't see what could possibly be so special about Gorgeous that would make it last. Now, six years later, it's still going strong and now having eaten there on numerous occasions I understand why. The pizzas at Gorgeous aren't like the cheap, oily, plastic tasting pizzas you find in the usual takeaway pizza places. These pizzas are fresh, use REAL toppings and sauces and the bases never make you feel like you've eaten your weight in cardboard. When trying to think which pizza is my favourite I honestly couldn't decide. All of the ones I have tried have been great, so I can definitely vouch for the 'Sophia, Cindy and Kirsten', but am sure the others will be equally as satisfying. Though pricier than the Dominos and Pizza Huts of the world, Gorgeous is an independent pizzeria with great New York style pizzas that are ironically named after top models. Once you try a slice from Gorgeous, the fact it costs three times the price of a Dominos pizza won't bother you in the slightest - the taste and quality will blow you away! Tip: Get the vanilla cheesecake for dessert, it's so good just thinking about it makes my mouthwater!

It wasn't busy, though I imagine on rugby nights this place is swamped. But, at 8pm on a rainy Saturday there was only one other couple in there. The service is great, and I suppose it can be when there's not many people, but I feel like it's great all the time. Our beers were brought to us super quickly, and when my boyfriend had only just finished his first, we were being asked if we wanted another. That could sound overwhelming, but the guy running the place that night was just so calm and together, it all flowed really well. To eat, we had the Jackie O pizza. Delicious. It's a thin crust, gourmet ingredients, and it was gobbled up quite quickly. And though I wasn't meant to, I did get the dessert. V naughty, but v worth it. It was a home-made chocolate donut, with more chocolate sauce and ice cream. Totally recommend this place. Yeah, the pizza does cost more than takeaway outlets, but I definitely know I'd rather spend the money here. We will definitely be back. Tip: I would be hesitant to come here on a rugby night if you wanted a quiet date night dinner. BUT in saying that, it would be an awesome place for dinner and drinks pre-game.

Bosco Verde is a fantastic Italian restaurant, dare I say my favourite Italain resturant in…read moreAuckland (I haven't been to THAT many, but still...). It's always busy and for good reason. The staff are friendly and helpful, the menu is excellent with their specials changing regularly and most importantly it has very tasty food. Their are two sizes for all pastas and most other dishes, entree and main. The entree size is big enough for a main, particularly if you are thinking about getting a starter or dessert. The main size was very large and for the one person who ordered it, too big to finish however they had takeaway containers. The specials always sound amazing. Last time we tried three of them, ravioli, crespelle and the fish of the day as well as the tortellini and maccheroni . The ravioli was filled with pumpkin and beef and served with a smoked paprika and martini rosso sauce and it was exceptional. My friend who ordered it gave it a 10/10. I asked the waitress what was in the sauce (it was so creamy and delicious) but she said it was a secret. My partner had the fish of the day which was snapper in a tomato sauce with scalloped potatoes, roasted capsicum and carrots. The fish was fantastic with a wonderful sauce and the scalloped potatoes were amazing, so rich and creamy. This time the server was happy to tell me that the recipe was from cuisine magazine so I'll have to track it down. Yum! I had the crespelle, a savory crepe, which was filled with chicken and scallops and served with a creamy mushroom sauce and bacon. Again, it was delicious and I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of scallops. The bacon was a little bit over-powering with the mushroom sauce but who doesn't like bacon? The maccheroni was tasty but a bit boring (at least in comparison to the other dishes) and the tortellini was tasty but very rich so I would recommend ordering an entrée size rather than main as it was huge. I ordered the lemon crème brulee for dessert which was on the specials board and it was heavenly, just the right amount of lemon and smooth and creamy. They also have free BYO and do takeaways. I have found it really hard to find Grandmother appropriate restaurants and Bosco Verde has become my go-to for when older relatives visit.

If you are planning on going book in advance because the restaurant is always full which is always a good sign. We really love the owner and chef, who is always happy to tell us honestly what he thinks is the best choice out of two options, or on the odd occasion, create a new dish by combining two things we can't choose between (we've been there enough to now be classed as 'regulars', it seems). The decor is hilarious - great mis-matching paintings/photos/who knows and even an in-built disco light that will sometimes be turned on if you're there for a birthday. It's just ridiculous. And so wonderful. We definitely rate the pasta over the pizzas, particularly the chicken fettucine, but the pizza is good too. They have GF bases available also. All in all, is a great wee place for when you want to go out but feel like somewhere cosy and relaxed, rather than fancy.

Its owner is like a pot-bellied, soft-spoken version of Kramer from Seinfeld. Ive gone so often over the years that he's become a kind of friend. In the old days orders were often forgotten. He would come rushing out, hunched over, hands clasped together, begging forgiveness and offering to make the 'special' pasta. Ten minutes later he would bring out a meal big enough to make lunch with for the next three days. It's been a while since they've made a mistake. I miss them. His restaurant isn't the fanciest place in town. It doesn't have Michelin star service. But it's the place I go to if I'm feeling down. Sitting in that strange orange room filled with faded paintings of Marilyn Monroe, old car ads and what looks like a group torturing someone in a medieval village square somehow makes me feel better. The best time to go is while experiencing that worst of tragedies: A birthday. The staff turn on the disco lights that hang from the ceiling and the place becomes the best party in town. We went recently on New Year's Eve. The owner sat down with us and talked about his struggle to make ends meet. He wanted to do better for his staff and his business this year. I kept thinking losing Eduardos would be a minor tragedy. It's one of our last bastions of glorious amateurism; a shambles that somehow assembles itself into something beautiful every single night. Also the food is really good.
