I purchased three trees from Papaya Nursery in March 2023, a peach, a pomegranate, and a guava. They have a huge selection of fruit trees, and many varieties of the ones that I wanted to buy. Alex was nice and extremely knowledgeable as he helped us through the process of tree selection depending on our location and where we were intending to put them in the yard. In addition to all information he shared during the visit, he also emailed notes about pruning of the bought trees. All the three trees have taken really well so far and have been doing well. I await the first fruit but I am certain that it will be amazing. Alex has recently provided me with guidance on pruning, fertilizing and soil amendments, which is more than a year after my purchase. That fellow Alex answered my call this morning. He was evasive like it felt he did not want to talk to me and contradicted everything I said or asked. I felt like I was in court being interrogated by opposing attorney. When i said i bought a tree 20 or so years ago I felt the anger in his being rise. All I said I was working all the time the tree grew fine but did not produce much. I dont understand this, I never had an experience this bad anywhere. I felt like he hated me right from the beginning. When I said something that was wrong he jumped down my throat, then he said something wrong and dismissed it as having made a mild error. I even found a fig tree type here that I couldn't find anywhere else. The man helping me was very, very nice and informative. We bought 7 different varietals from Alex several years ago, and those fruit trees have flourished over the years. I was specifically interested in the fruit trees that are native to India, viz. mango, fig, mulberry, custard apple (Sitaphal), etc. Apparently Alex's parents went to India in the 1960s, brought back plants, acclimated them to the Southern California climate, and still have them to sell to customers like me. We found this gem of a nursery while looking for a papaya tree this past weekend. Located in a residential area in the north San Fernando valley, we were so surprised when we were ushered into the backyard which was meticulously organized into a beautiful nursery of tropical fruit trees. The owner, Alex, was very knowledgeable as was his father David. They claim they graft their own trees finding the sweetest strains and matching them up with hardy root stock so you get superior performance out of the plants. This place is a gem. I tried to go a year ago when I was in the area, but because they are same day appointment only, the timing didn't work out. Anyways, I'd been scouring the internet looking for someone who sells lucuma trees. Alex sells them (and after lots of research it seems he may be the only person in CA who does), so I made another trip down south. Totally worth driving a few hundred miles. I wish I had more room in the car to buy other things! Expect to spend a couple hours here... Alex and his dad are very passionate about what they do. If you are passionate about rare plants you'll likely want to stick around and see where their knowledge takes you. We got to taste test fresh longon, jaboticaba, and were sent home with a few miracle fruit and bay leaves. What a fun experience. I'll be back next time I'm in the LA area. read more

If you need to protect delicate plants from LA's occasional frosts, they know both what you need to buy and how to use it! When it comes to coaxing exotics into doing here what they really have no business doing (like fruiting!), no one is better than Papaya Tree Nursery... This is the only place I know of that has managed to get Soursop trees (Custard Apple) to fruit... and they have several of them! This nursery is like Heaven in the Valley. We just had to call in advance to schedule an appointment time. This is great because you get the nursery all to yourself for that time. The owner, Alex, is the nicest, most welcoming guy ever and answered all our questions about all the different and unique fruit trees. I met Alex the owner and caretaker of all the beautifully maintained plants and trees. who was very informative an friendly. He and his father spent a great deal of time ( More than they should have ) talking fruits, helping me find the trees I was looking for, Then helped me load and secure them in my vehicle for safe transport home. I've been intrigued by miracle fruit ever since I read about it in a 2008 news article. Sometime in 2009 when I searched for a miracle fruit discussion thread I found a recommendation for Papaya Tree Nursery. (Thank you Yelper Robert H.!) After researching their website, I placed an order online with Papaya Tree Nursery, knowing full well that I was on a waiting list until the fruit was available. To be honest I kinda forgot about it until several months later when they contacted me via email. Super excited, I confirmed my order and they shipped the fruit to me in the mail. I was little surprised because originally I thought the fruit was fresh and what I received were their dehydrated fruit. They've rectified the description on their site since then so you know what you'll get in the mail and when you can go there to buy it fresh. I ordered I think around 26 fruit and invited friends out the following month to a miracle fruit party. According to the directions they sent in the mail along with the fruit, I stored it in a dry glass container with paper towel wrapped loosely around it to prevent any moisture from rotting them. I also sent out a list of things that people could try for their "flavor tripping" that the directions recommended like cheese, beer, and of course fruit and such. My landlord's lemon tree helped me provide the main food and my friends brought the rest. I just made sure to provide plates, several cutting boards & a knife, lots of cups, and ice for beverages. It was a good party and my friends had a interesting time "flavor tripping" with the fruit. Not as potent as the fresh fruit, we had to coat our tongues a second time with the fruit, especially after eating cheese. I'm glad Papaya Tree Nursery is located nearby and that I don't have to place an order across the country to get miracle fruit. Despite the wait, the ordering process is fairly simple, they send you some info on how to store it and enjoy it and I'd definently order from Papaya Tree Nursery again for my next flavor tripping party. Now that they've an option to buy it fresh in person, I'll have to plan a tasting party for next summer! read more

I loved visiting this place! My husband and I spent a few hours here chatting and tasting some unbelievable fruits. They had black sapote--chocolate pudding fruit--that we have wanted to find and have in our garden for some time. Alex let us sample some of this incredible stuff and were beyond delighted! They also grow Kensington Pride mangoes, an incredible type from Australia that we were excited to see there too! The price of their trees overall was very reasonable given the care and effort they take to make their trees thrive. Our banana tree cost $45 and it was worth every penny. Alex and his family were incredibly generous to us and wonderfully knowledgable to speak with. We will be back to purchase a papaya tree, mango, black sapote, or golden berry vine soon! About four years ago I bought two dwarf trees from this place. One was Indian Cheeku (Zapote) and other white Sapote. Planted Cheeku in my house. Other one slowly died due to poor care. My plant is giving fruits this year. We have already eaten five fruits. They are super sweet and very flavorful. I am anticipating years of harvest. Alex and his father (David?) are very helpful and knowledgeable. Would highly recommend them.
