Green Thumb Nursery is the green oasis I always need it to be and then some. This groovy West Valley gem in the heart of Canoga Park is located on Sherman Way, across from Follow Your Heart, between Jordan Avenue and Vasser Avenue. It's open from 8am to 5pm daily with an all-star cast of incredible knowledgeable and caring individuals who help keep GTN great. Grab a wagon and load up because you won't know when to stop with some many great plants, deals on supplies and their inviting layout. As a small chain of garden centers meets plant nurseries I have to say this location stands out. Their online shop is easy also with get learning materials, newsletters , resources and even a plant library. I'll never forget my first trip here with my friend Sam, definitely need to hit her up again for a plant day, but absolutely still enjoy coming here with others and of course solo for some planty self-care. Adding some Elephant Bush (Portulacaria afra) friends to the plant family at home. Absolutely and 818/SFV/LA Valley favorite among many. You'll want to get lost between the many areas the have here and in the main area as well as their extended open air garden on the parking lot side. Staff here is very personable and extremely knowledgeable. From lawn and outdoor patio furniture or fixtures, fountains, decorations and plant care musts, GTN has a bit of it all. Even fun seasonal items and sales. Entrance in back, where you'll also find their parking lot, fairly spacious, but it can and does fill up on weekends. Restroom available for customers. read more

I could spend hours here! I love checking out their selection of plants, gifts and home goods. They have a giant selection of pots and even fountains! Pricing here can be a little steep, depending on what you are looking for. We were looking for pots, and found some nice terracotta ones that were reasonably priced, but inventory was a little slim. I also saw that some of the items on their shelves have been there so long, the boxes are faded and kind of dusty. Some of the signs for pricing are hard to read, so we had to flag down an employee to help us, but they were happy to help. A good portion of the nursery and store are in the shade, but some of the other plants are outside in the sun so bring your sunscreen! There's a lot to explore. This nursery is huge and full of people and plants. They have an outdoor plants section and an indoor plants section inside the store that also sells all sorts of gardening paraphernalia. They have a great variety of outdoor plants some of which look healthy. I don't blame them for some others not looking healthy due to the heat. What could really improve hence the 3 stars is a lack of sufficient signage and explanation. We really wanted to like this place, but we couldn't go look for an associate to explain to us this and that every time we had questions. If you already know your plants and how they should be taken care if, you will be fine here. If you are a beginner trying hard to choose and learn, you will feel abandoned. These guys helped me so much. This review is old, but I wanted to make sure I gave them a shout-out. I called ahead of time (a month in advance) and worked out a deal with Sylvia to order 4 inch English ivy varieties for 6.99 each (6.99*29 = 202.71, with tax I paid $222.47) as I used these for our wedding dinner rehearsal party favors. They were a hit, everyone at our dinner rehearsal loved them, and some mentioned they were looking for a similar variety. I was a little worried about calling ahead of time, but I'm glad I did because they had them ready to go and even helped us load the plants into our truck. The service was amazing, and once we arrived at the nursery, we couldn't help but get lost in all of the other beautiful plant varieties they carry. They also have decorative items for your garden, along with lots of planting essentials. This place will forever be special to us. read more

Someone recommended Green Thumb Nursery so I went and checked it out also reviews were good. I redid the front of my home and wanted to add some new plants . I walked in from the front as my 1st time being there and wow the place is very big and they have a wide selection of Indoor and outdoor plants and everything you can imagine for gardening. I went all the way to the back and found some one to help me and we looked around and guy seemed pretty knowledgeable but didnt he seemed like he was busy to help and out to no where he goes I have to go to lunch hmmm ok anyways I ended up looking around some more and found few I liked. You wouldn't expect such a huge nursery to be located in this area but they have a large selection of plants from tropical to flowers, vegetables, herbs, fruit trees, succulents, & seeds. They also have a large selection of soil and fertilizer/ pest management products. I went in looking for herbs to make teas & found some chamomile, peppermint & some seeds to plant lemon balm & bergamot. Hands down, bar none, this is our go-to spot for all things gardening! The staff are super friendly and helpful, more than willing to give you the info that ou need. They offer a wide selection of plants, organic dirt, and a lovely collection of Italian pottery to put your plants in. They also have a fully stocked section for the more intense stuff, you know, everything that goes into a garden, from sprinklers, plumbing, etc... Love supporting a smaller business, rather than some megastore like Lowes or Home Depot. Last year we came here to purchase a Christmas Tree and we returned again this year. They have kind, helpful employees and convenient delivery service. The delivery was very prompt and the gentlemen who brought our tree in and placed it where we wanted it were kind and helpful. Besides the trees, they have a huge Christmas shop this time of year (with a sprinkling of Hanukkah items as well) and a variety of plants, garden-related items, and beautiful planters. A few highlights: -extensive selections of fertilizers -impressive plumbing/sprinkler repair/irrigation section -large selection of different varieties of trees (for example: they had 6-7 types of avocados in stock) -GORGEOuS and well maintained grounds with blooms everywhere -native plant section -tropical plant section -veggie seedlings on sale I could go on. Let me start out by saying my mom used to take me here on the weekends for all her gardening need. As a kid I loved it and it was a treat to go there. That was in the 60's. Today was my 64th birthday, and my husband and I drove to the San Fernando Valley for lunch and because I wanted him to see Green Thumb Nursery. It has grown quite a bit since I was there last. They have so much stuff to look at, plants, yard art, fertilizers, tools, pottery..... you name it they have it. And the people that work there are top notch. They can answer any questions you have. I was searching for carnivorous plants in the area, and the San Fernando Valley has quite slim pickings in that department. Thankfully, Green Thumb Nursery popped up and sure enough, I was able to pick up a Sarracenia and Nepenthes during my first visit here. Eventually I would return here multiple times to check for new carnivorous plants and have since learned to call ahead because the drive isn't too awful, it is still a drive for me. This place has a pretty large selection of plants for your different needs. Vegetable and herb gardening, indoor plants, succulents, trees, it has it all. Also plenty of garden supplies. Air plants, aquatic plants. It's truly a wonderland here. Obviously, I was sold by their tagline of being a Disneyland for plants. The people working here are all super helpful and friendly. They were also amazed at the plants they sold too. Last week I picked up a Drosera, Dionaea, and two more Sarracenias, all for my carnivorous plant garden. Oct 2023 Service is exceptional. There was a younger kid that helped me out in the plastic pot section. He was really good about carrying through with all my requests, getting prices, etc. In terms of the products available here, I was on a mission this time around to try to find some really thick plastic or resin 10-in to 12-in pots for outdoor use. They do have some good ones that are smaller size like 8", but not quite what I was looking for. When it comes to quality, what I'm looking for in plastic or resin pots is material that is at least 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Otherwise, the plastic tends to crack after time in direct sunlight. The 8-in pots here are perfect if you like that concrete look, but want something lighter in weight. And they do fit the criteria of quality. If you're reading this, and you're looking for something smaller in the 8-in size, these resin pots might be perfect for your application. I did find a couple items that were really fairly priced. One of them was the wooden trellis at $17. This is double the thickness of material, and more heavy duty Staples than anything you'll find at home depot. I believe regular price was around $35 or so. They were on sale, so I picked a couple up. Great for growing vine type plants. The other item I found that was really durable were the 11-in resin saucers at $9-11. These things are at least an eighth of an inch thick, super durable, and designed to last for years in hard, direct sunlight. Price depends on the color, so choose wisely. Unfortunately, the pots that are supposed to go with the saucers didn't have the same thickness of material. Otherwise I totally would have bought the matching pot and saucer as a set. read more

Honestly, the staff is amazing. There is always someone close by, ready to answer questions or lead you to a plant. The soil and amendment selection is great as well. But, the plant selection has gone down a bit, and the prices have shot way up over the past few years. We will still be coming here for the specialty plants.
