I just attended the mattered of West Side Story. Excellent! What an amazing production. The theatre is located in Milburn, NJ. There are several parking lots and a nearby train station plus a public bus which make this playhouse accessible via a variety of transportation. (The nearest lots fill up fast, so plan your arrival time.) The parking fee is $12 if you use any of the theatre's lots. There was (as is expected) a long entry line. More staff is needed to move the line along more quickly. The elderly and those with mobility challenges were allowed to bypass the long line and gain immediate entry. The lobby sells snacks and drinks that can be purchased before the show or during intermission. There are ushers to help you find your seats and a very friendly young man helped me at the souvenir counter. The lighting and acoustics appeared modern in my limited opinion. The feel of the auditorium was that of the traditional theatre setting with the rich burgundy drapery and snug plush seats. There is an odd pitch to the floor which makes walking to orchestra seating a little awkward because of the slant. So keep this in mind if you are a little shaky on your feet. I have a delightful experience here and I hope to return for future productions. read more

4/16/26 Update: Came to the Papermill to see "1776". Outside, The Papermill has several high top tables where you can enjoy a snack prior to the performance. Security- April 16, 2026 was an unusually hot sweltering day. Specifically, it was like 90°. There was an extremely long line entering the theatre. Understandably, everyone must go through security. There were a large number of elderly people. I think there needs to be a separate line for people who need assistance. A few of these people were let in ahead of some people, then it just stopped. MPAC (Morristown) has excellent security for people entering the theater. The Papermill should look at their protocol. The first half of "1776" was a little too drawn out and chaotic. Of course, it was politicians arguing. However, I think somehow more singing would've made it more enjoyable. All the actors did have the pipes for wonderful singing. Anyway, the second half of the show was much more enjoyable. The staging and costumes were great for that time period. I understand in July 2026, the Papermill Playhouse will be going under a full renovation. Looking forward to the upcoming season and new renovations. read more

I've been attending shows at the Paper Mill Playhouse for many years. I've never seen a bad show here. And a couple have gone to Broadway next! New Jersey is so lucky to have this awesome theatre. They have comfortable seats, nice bathroom facilities, a variety of concessions available for purchase, and talented performers. The Papermill's restaurant just reopened after an extensive renovation and revamp, or there are several yummy restaurants a short walk away from the theater. I recently ate at the Italian restaurant Basilica in Millburn and highly recommend checking it out for dinner before or after your Papermill show. read more

Paper Mill Playhouse is absolutely my go-to spot for seeing a show. You get that Broadway-quality experience without the Broadway prices.or the headache of NYC tolls and expensive parking. Tickets are most times reasonably priced, and there's almost always some kind of promotion available. Parking is about $12, which is very reasonable. If you end up in one of the lots a little farther away, they offer a complimentary shuttle that runs back and forth, which is a really nice touch. They also offer great discount options like $20 student tickets, a 30 Under 30 program for $30 tickets, and discounts for first responders and educators! You can find that info on the website! There truly isn't a bad seat in the house. No matter where you sit, the view of the stage is excellent, the sound quality is on point, and the seats are comfortable with decent legroom. The staff is consistently friendly, helpful, and welcoming, which really adds to the experience. Concessions are pricey (no surprise there), so just be prepared for that. One of my favorite personal touches is that if you hang around after the show, cast members often come out into the garden area for photos or to sign playbills. It feels much more personal than a Broadway experience. I've been coming to Paper Mill since I was a child and have loved every single show I've seen here. The papermill is an institution in Jersey, not as big and modern as NJPAC but a beautiful theater with a rich history. I was thankful they offered school matinees of 1776 for $25 a ticket even though we did get put in the last two rows of the mezzanine the staff runs a seamless operation here for school trips. Bathrooms need a makeover, 3 ladies rooms for the mezzanine was brutal with a couple hundred teenagers in the audience. read more

When you live in NJ, and you want to see a show but not travel into Manhattan, Paper Mill is a great alternative. My wife and I have been here quite a few times and last weekend we saw Mystic Pizza there. The show was a lot of fun! Similar to Mamma Mia, they incorporated a lot of good music into the plot. These were mostly all songs from the 80's and 90's which the audience remembered. Many of the cast members have Broadway experience. Parking ($12) is easy. The seating is comfortable and all seats give a good view of the stage. It's a great spot to see a show! read more

This place is just incredible. I am not a fan of New York City in today's world. I used to really love going to see Broadway shows, but I haven't been in a very long time. And I have to say I think I would much rather come to this playhouse everything about it was amazing It was very easy to get to. I went with a group of friends. The parking was $12 instead of being $100 in New York City. The entire area was clean. The theater itself is amazing. You can honestly see from any seat that you are in there because it is smaller. We were lucky enough to be up in the front in the orchestra section and we saw Mystic Pizza and it was just incredible. The actors were great . The entire venue was very well maintained. You can also grab a glass of wine or a bottle of water and bring it to your seat. The wine was actually very good and only $12 a glass and it was a nice pour. The only thing that could use a little updating is their bathrooms, but they were clean. I highly recommend going to see a play here and the ticket prices are not outrageous. I was already looking at going to see the little mermaid, but unfortunately, the only date that I can go it's already sold out. But if you're in the New Jersey area check them out. They also have a great restaurant on premises. We did not eat there, but we did grab some drinks. The Nutella martini was amazing. And we also had the appetizer of the themed. Mystic Pizza wasn't a big fan, but I'm very picky about pizza. read more

I had not been to the Paper Mill in a while, since the "renovation". I was truly appalled at what they had done to the seats. What before had been truly comfortable seats are now awful. Maybe younger people who are now used to being crammed into airline seats accept this as normal. You have to keep your arms in your lap because there is no room to rest them at your sides, and forget about extending your legs. And I will mention that I am a small/average size person. The gentleman in front of me, an average sized man, was spilling out of the seat on both sides. This is not a comfortable night at the theatre. I guess making more money is all that matters. I will not be returning. What a shame. read more

This is a great location to see stage plays. It is a wonderful alternative if you're not up to heading across the bridge/tunnel to NYC for off/broadway shows. And much more reasonable pricing, too. They could stand to update/modernize the theater, but I must say they're making great strides since my last visit years ago. The last show I saw here was After Midnight. A repeat for me, as I saw this show nearly ten years ago on Broadway in nyc, when it premiered featuring Babyface, Fantasia, Toni Braxton, and Dule Hill. It was excellent then and I thoroughly enjoyed it here as well. I was excited to see Angela Birchett in the main cast. The seats are more comfortable now than they were; that's progress! I was entertained from the moment curtains went up until the closing act of the show. I highly recommend this venue! Be warned, parking can be hectic. However, I greatly appreciate the shuttle option if you have to park a distance from the venue (especially during cold seasons). read more

Went to see Jersey Boys and this was my 2nd time at Paper Mill Playhouse. Performance was great and was impressed by how they could create so many scenes from one stage setup. It's definitely a great theater to watch shows. Some tips and FYI for you about this theater. -They do have paid parking by the theater for $12 (cash). Parking wasn't a problem, but when the show was over, that was the problem. There was no one to manage or control the leaving traffic, so it was chaotic leaving the theater. These lots fill up quickly, so get there early. I got there 45 minutes early and it was already full -There is municipal parking downtown where you could park and then walk over to the theater. -Bathroom lines do get pretty long, so don't wait until the last minute to go. -Seats are very comfortable and not so tight like it would be in the city, so that was a plus. No need to go into the city for shows. You have Paper Mill Playhouse. read more

It's been a couple of years since I visited the theatre. Today, I got a ticket to a show called "Jersey Boy," which I had wanted to see for a while (a few years). I even got a great seat in front of the mezz in the middle. They started the show, and 1st 5 minutes stopped, stating that they had a problem with the lighting; they started again. The 1st half of the show was great. I just love the show and the music. Intermission started, which was supposed to be 15 minutes, but after half an hour, they said they had a sound system issue. After 50 minutes passed, they canceled the rest of the show. They said we needed to contact the Box office to reschedule or get a refund. I'm very disappointed that we did not see the show's end. Let's see what they do to make up for the show. I looked at the rest of the scheduled shows, and hardly any seats were left. I hope they can move it to another weekend and give us the same seats. But it makes me wonder if this theatre is falling apart and they cannot keep their system working. Will see. So far, I cannot recommend this theatre until they find a reasonable alternative. I did not buy food or drinks since we had difficulty finding parking. We got to the theatre area about 30 minutes before the show, and all the parking nearby was full. So we had to park at the main Milburn parking and walk there; it is a good thing that the parking lot is not too far away; it took about 10 minutes, and it was a good thing they did not start the show in time. I'm not complaining; I'm just disappointed that this theatre has started falling apart. We used to go there as season ticket holders. Let's see how they will handle canceling the show. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Update: After I emailed them, they responded very quickly and gave me an alternative for next Saturday night with even better seats. This was my first time visiting PMPH. My boyfriend and took me to see Mystic Pizza and it was fantastic! The venue is very quaint and really not a bad seat anywhere. We've been in Jersey for over 2 years now and we finally made our way to the Paper Mill to see Hercules. It was a very enjoyable experience! Staff here are super nice and the seats were quite comfortable. We had right orchestra seats, the last two in the row and we had a great view. I think the further back you are, the less you actually miss on the stage. I think I only had 2-3 scenes where I couldn't see the entire cast as they entered on the right. Tickets are a fraction of the price if you pick the side seats, so I think it's a great deal. We parked in Lot 7, which is free on the weekends, and took a free shuttle over to the theater. It takes about 5 minutes and the shuttles are quite comfortable. We have tickets to see Rent later in the season and I can't wait to see what their 23/24 season looks like! read more

My companions & I joked that even though I saw the musical "The Wanderer" here at Paper Mill Playhouse, I didn't actually see the show because my eyes were glued to Joey McIntyre (of NKOTB fame, did I even need to specify??) the entire time. He plays one of the leads, Johnny, a dark character that I can't say more about because I don't want to give away the twist. Needless to say, Joey was fantastic, as was Mike Wartella who plays the lead role of Dion (of 50s singing group Dion & the Belmonts.) Paper Mill Playhouse is located in picturesque Millburn. There are cafes, bakeries, & restaurants a 10-15-minute stroll away & Carriage House Restaurant is on property for drinks or a meal pre-or-post show. There's a brook behind the brick theater; an idyllic setting, really. Would love to see another production here. As of early April 2022 when we went, you are required to show vax status & to wear masks inside. No food or drink is allowed once you're seated. read more

Had a nice time here! It is a fairly small theatre, which means you don't really have bad seats and the show feels fairly intimate. We traveled there from the city and it was an easy ride from Penn station, plus a short walk (they also seem to have shuttle services available). They seem to have a bar and a shop where you can buy merch. There is also a nice outside area to get out during intermission. read more

Quick and easy to pick up tickets right before the show, and there are lots of places to hang out in the lobby, or upstairs before the show or intermission. If it's nice weather there are also places to sit outside and enjoy the view of the creek or koi pond. Museum/galley-esque setting upstairs with local artists' work. I really liked exploring this space. The seats in the theatre were comfortable for me, and I didn't have any difficulty seeing the stage over anyone. Paper Mill Playhouse delivers Broadway at a fraction of the price. I wish I lived closer! We went to see the Disney musical Hercules and it was amazing. Cast and crew is so talented and the stage set was quite elaborative. They don't spare any details at the Paper Mill Playhouse. The whole experience was so much more comfortable for us than watching a show in Manhattan. We got to park at lot 7 for free and there was a free shuttle. The parking lot is not marked and we only found it because the shuttle driver told us where to park. Then he gave us a ride to the other pick up point and we were able to have lunch at one of the local restaurants before the show. After lunch we caught the shuttle to the theater and arrived with enough time to grab a hot chocolate. The crowd is very orderly at Paper Mill and the theater itself is impeccably clean and in fantastic condition. And now, I eagerly away to find out what shows are upcoming at Paper Mill. read more

Was excited to go to the PMP for the first time, but itll probably be my last. Saw Rent and while the performance was great the playhouse is in need of upgrades. How can you only have two urinals and a stall for the mens room? Womens room im sure was only a couple stalls as the lines during intermission were back towards the entrance The parking lot is a big clusterf*ck and they charge you $8. Some cars were even blocked in and double parked. Next time Ill park at the library or up the block and just walk. They say arrive an hour early but you really dont have to. Will call has two windows and was never a big line. Food and drink options were ok but could of been better. A small can of soda or water isnt going to last very long. The Papermill Playhouse in Millburn NJ is a super great place to be entertain and enjoy life to its fullest! Everything is one hundred per cent top notch At clean! The cleanliness even extends well into the bathrooms! The majority of the employees are extremely friendly and helpful! The cleaning ladies in the women's bathrooms are like sweet peaches and oranges. They are worth more than just an ordinary tip. They really know their job and are extremely quick and helpful to get every woman what she needs and where to go to get it. There is always a great variety of plays with excellent actors, actresses, plots, music : scenery. I enjoyed the special effect of having the bubbles in the Little Mermaid. I think families especially families with children have so much fun because of the great comfortable seats and the drinks being big enough and plenty enough to feed an entire family I watch the conductor at the many different plays and he always was able to work his hand or Boton well without even a second of hesitation. Yhe result was always beautiful with the music at perfection. WOW! It also helps the customers to know that they are receiving one more feather on their hats. They can smile a great big hug and know that their money every bit of it was well spent! I consider the Papermill playhouse my personal heavenly orchestra mixed with a fun play room with children and even adults who like to have fun and dream like kids. I want to say that I will definitely direct people to go to The Papermill Playhouse and I'm sure I always will direct them to go there! read more

Okay. I have participated in the New Voices concert for the past two years, so I know my way around the place. I understand hw much work it takes to put on these shows. They are absolutely incredible. I have never seen a sub-par performance here. Every seat gives you a magical view. I love Papermill. They are broadway calliber shows. Waited outside in the cold for over an hour after the show was supposed to begin just for them to cancel the show for "technical difficulties". They wouldn't even let people in to use the bathrooms. Saw a new show, so updating my review. "My Very Own British Invasion", having its world premiere though 3/3/19, is a terrific musical based on the life of Peter Noone (Herman's Hermits). The story is a little vapid, but the music and choreography were fab. The "orchestra" was a great live band, and the entire, very talented ensemble was really tight doing songs by HH, Beatles, The Animals, The Zombies, Dusty Springfield, Rolling Stones, Moody Blues, and Steppenwolf (weren't they Canadian?). If you are of the generation that loved this music, you will enjoy this production. Ticket price Thurs night, 3rd row right mezzanine, $75 inc. fees. The seats are tiered steeply, so you never have an obstructed view, and they nailed the sound. It's great having this Broadway-quality theater only 25 min from my house. We went on one of the freezing winter nights close to Christmas, so I didn't get a chance to wander around and see the historical aspects of the paper mill, but I would love to come back and catch another show and explore. read more

I'm a long-standing season subscriber. When a show was canceled recently, I received an email telling me I would be issued a refund. However, when I didn't receive the refund I called the ticket office. I was told I had only been eligible to book another performance of the show, not a cash refund. So I asked to book another performance. I was told that was not possible since the show closed. I asked to be permitted to book another show, but was told their policy only allows me to see the same show. I am terminating my subscription. read more

I really like this theatre, it's quaint, great shows, nice they send a free shuttlebus to the train station. However, for some reason I went to see Rent and the theatre was like a meat locker. So freezing and uncomfortable, I am sick as a dog today. Don't know why, in June, when it was high 60s, they had to do this. I probably won't return until fall. read more

My review has nothing to do with the quality of the performances but rather the service (or lack thereof) that I encountered. One month prior to Covid (1/2020) I won a raffle entitling me to 2 tickets to a show in mid-April. Since, of course, the theater was closed, I called the box office a while later and asked about seeing a show in the future - and as I recall the discussion there didn't seem to be an issue regarding this. Today I called to see if they would honor my tickets to see a different show. It is 3 hears later, but Covid interrupted the theater's performances for most of that time. I was told that their policy was not to honor tickets that were three years old. First of all, I couldn't find wording in this regard on their website, but more to the point, I would expect them to be more considerate of the circumstances and as a show of good customer relations allow me to see a show on 6/17. I have been to numerous shows there but I will never frequent that establishment again. They will lose all my future business while giving me tickets would have cost them nothing (assuming the theater was not 100% booked). Bad business and worse customer relations. read more
