Let's get one thing straight first. I love stationery. I enjoy stationery I don't even need. If I have to do a lot of writing, I prefer tipped pens as opposed to ballpoint, in as vast a variety of colours as possible. Now, we all know we can get multipacks of these at the local supermarket or pound shop, but it just doesn't feel quite the same as purchasing something from the bevy of office supply loveliness that is Paperchase. One thing you'll always notice when standing outside this humongous, triple-floor branch in the centre of Manchester is not the Big Issue seller, although that might make you feel a little guilty for overspending on that eraser shaped like a flower or that Dalmatian print stapler. No, the biggest wow factor is the window display. They darn well make the most of it. And it's seasonal too, whether it's that phrase that strikes fear and depression into the hearts of children between the ages of five and sixteen and teachers everywhere, 'Back to School', or Mother's Day, Father's Day, Easter, Christmas, Valentine's Day... Paperchase will always via the medium of magical window dressing find a reason for you to buy stationery. I'd seriously recommend this branch over any of the weeny little concessions in Kendal's or Selfridges. You've got way more choice. But this isn't just a place for quirky little diaries, fluorescent pink post-its, pencils in every colour of the rainbow, stickers, iPod covers, damask wrapping paper, furry pencil cases and heart-shaped calculators. There's so much more. It has one of the biggest and best greeting card selections I've ever seen. There are gifts aplenty for the friend who has everything. There are home storage solutions. Pretty boxes. Lunchboxes. Tupperware. You can even buy pet supplies. Little random toys for stocking fillers. Toddle on up the stairs and find an entire floor dedicated to art supplies. There's even furniture, clocks, mirrors... I could go on. But I won't. Go see for yourself. I'm telling you, you'll walk in with the aim of buying a simple mobile phone cradle for your office desk and you'll come away with five different photo frames in five different shapes. They stock sweet, witty, playful and kitsch cards from a variety of designers and a brilliant array of notebooks, journals, address books, recipe cards, pens and stationary. This being their biggest store in the North West, there's also good quality paints, pastels, paper, card and brushes for artists upstairs. I have to agree with Rachel here, Paperchase is amazing!!! It's not just the stationary, which is fantastic, I have tons of pretty little notebooks that are so cute I don't even want to use them! They sell tons of other stuff too including amazing Christmas decorations! Just been there today and I feel all Christmassy and happy now! They also do a huge range of cards and wrapping paper which I absolutely adore. The cards are really different and really pretty and the wrapping paper is the sort of stuff your mum would go mad for! My mum does anyway! It's not cheap but you wouldn't expect it to be either! I definitely recommend the diaries, a good Christmas present idea...! read more

I had never set foot in a Paperchase store until very recently, mainly because I hadn't needed to plan a wedding until very recently, but I'd clearly been missing out - what an awesome shop! Whether you're looking for a new notebook or diary with a cute/fancy cover, a birthday card for a loved one, arty/crafty materials, a new pen, a book about photography or a stylish photo frame, Paperchase's vast selection will not disappoint. I've been in this branch of Paperchase several times now, seeking out the perfect materials for making our wedding stationery - there are so many different types of paper and card to choose from upstairs, it can be half an hour+ before I've decided what to buy. Staff are friendly and happy to offer their assistance, plus I got 15% off my next purchase the first time I bought something (a wedding planning scrapbook and wedding list book, yes I'm in danger of becoming Bridezilla). I will warn you though, things aren't cheap and you can probably get similar things from WH Smith but I guarantee they won't be as well designed and the paper won't be of the same quality. TL;DR - Best place around for cards, stationery and gifts. I can't lie - I love Paperchase, and this is the biggest and best store going. If you want a greeting card, they have one of the biggest ranges you'll ever see with some really unique cards, ranging from the beautiful to the hilarious. You'll find cards here for occasions which aren't well catered for in other stores. Need a bar-mitzah, Eid, Easter or Diwali card? You'll be covered here. They also have huge ranges of unique wrapping paper which change regularly. My family constantly comment on the weird and wonderful wrapping papers I use, but the truth is they all come from here. The rest of the ground floor is devoted to writing materials - notebooks, pens, writing paper... and their selection is huge. Top tip - the notebooks at the front of the store can be quite pricy, but at the rear they have some plainer ones which are still nice but much cheaper. They also usually have someone in store who will personalise the notebooks for you by embossing customised text onto the cover. The next floor up is seasonal goods - think Christmas cards and Christmas decorations in winter. They also sell wedding supplies here. Finally you come to the top floor which is a mixture of all sorts - there are well curated selections of books, gifts and ornaments. They also have high end writing supplies like fountain pens. There's also a huge selection of arts and crafts, the kinds of thing you might find in Fred Aldous - watercolours, oil paints, spray paints, easels... the list goes on. There's also an activity area where they hold events, and the fabulous Tinderbox coffee shop (which gets its own listing on Yelp). Paperchase is quite a large brand of stores, specializing in stationary, this is quite an impressive, large store and one of their three flagship stores in the UK, alongside London and Glasgow, Paperchase are quite a big brand with 130 store in the UK and 30 across the rest of Europe, including France and Germany, and also the middle east. I called in here today, to have a look at lever arch folders, after having a disaster with a good 8-9 of the products I had bought for £4.99 each from Whsmith had broke, and I had got sick and tired of just replacing them, the lever arches here seemed very good quality and nicer than the Whsmith ones as well as being cheaper too at £3 each. The prices seemed cheaper especially for folders, meanwhile Ryman charge £3.99 and Whsmith charge £4.99, who all have stores nearby, but it is worth nothing Whsmith sell lower quality goods for higher prices and both stores mentioned have 3 for 2 deals. This store is huge, even the first floor of three seemed really nice, with a great selection of all things stationary, mostly from the Paperchase brand, including nice,different size and color envelopes for gifts, they seemed to stock a few gifts, and cards which was good too. The staff seemed nice at the till as well, and I was pleased with a selection of colors for the lever arch including a nice white one, I am yet to discover at either WHsmith or Ryman, who I normally buy folders from. This is a nice store, and based on my first visit, I think it has done enough to deserve 4 stars and i am pleased to say this has set high expectations for the rest of the Paperchase brand, despite this being a flagship store for them in the North of England. UPDATE: Ever since the refurbishment of the store, the layout has become much more confusing and difficult for example not everything is in one place now, and it is often hard to find certain things, which would make it harder to find something in the rush, and there now seems to be less staff on the shop floor to raise a hand, the lever arch quality is very good designed by Paperchase, having had problems with similar products where I have had probably over 10 which broken from WHsmith, and around 6 from Ryman, out of 5 folders I have bought from Paperchase, only one has broke which gives them the "most favorable" quality rating, most of their products do seem okay but a few just seem to be junk, clutter and filling up a big store, I can't help but feel I was in awe of the size and magnitude of this store originally and now feel they have to sink back to reality, with a low three star rating. UPDATE: Slight decrease in the standard of customer service, and even product selection so sadly a downgraded rating to a two-star rating is due. read more

Holy stationery Batman! I have never seen a Paperchase this big! I love stationery, office supplies, crafting stuff... so this was right up my alley. The ground floor is kind of what you expect from Paperchase... the different themes of journals, cards, paper, pens, pencil cases, frames, and even the packed lunch accessories. Never quite understood the packed lunch accessories and how they fit into the stationery scheme, but maybe I'm just jealous that I haven't had a cute collection to pack my lunch in. I used to do a lot of letter writing and a store like this would have come in really handy! These days sending snail mail tends to be a special occasion sort of thing, so I don't usually need the boxed sets. I do like their selection of notebooks and diaries as that tends to be what I use the most. I may like to spend a lot of time with the pens though :) Yes, I am a pen snob, mostly because as a lefty, some pens don't work quite the same as they do for righties so I have to try my pens out before purchasing. I have to say I have had good luck with their pens, so I keep coming back. Moving to the next floor, you'll find decorations and greeting cards. There were a number of wedding decoration displays, including books on DIY Wedding Decor, invitations, guest books, scrap books, bunting, and even glass bottles for favors. I found a cute wooden cut out of 'Mr&Mrs' that may be used for next year's wedding do in the U.S. I was half anticipating it to be a bit expensive because I sometimes find their stationery a bit on the expensive side, but it was only £8! On the other side of the floor they had decorations and things for baby showers. On the top floor, you'll find some of their more expensive gifts, bolts of paper, paints, and even a cafe! I had absolutely no clue there was a cafe inside! I didn't try it, but it is more incentive to buy some stationery, head upstairs, and write in the cafe! They also had some printed wrapping paper, however, I would be tempted to frame some of it, like the maps. When shopping for wrapping paper with a difference, I just had to come to Paperchase. It also appears to be one of the only places in town stocking both Christmas and birthday paper - damn both me and the other half having December birthdays! Despite my qualms with the gift selection, I couldn't help but have a look around. The queue wasn't getting any smaller, so why not? There are plenty of Christmas goodies alongside the usual characters, with one quite small section 'for men.' Although small, this is probably my favourite section, with some great cuff links and hip-flasks. Very sophisticated. Due to the maddening Christmas shoppers, there was someone directing people to the next available till and ensuring everyone knew where to be, which definitely helped the usually awful system. The girl behind the counter was nice, even when there was an issue with my card - her manager on the other hand was a touch stand offish and had very little patience. On the whole, a-ok. read more

A smorgasbord of things you never knew you needed This is a department store for a certain kind of stationery buff, someone who's looking for seasonal changes in their stationery needs. And let's face it, who doesn't change their stationery every season? It's got to match your shoes, your belt and your bag, right? When it first opened, many, many years ago, it was at the very beginning of the Manchester renaissance, before the independent shops of the Northern Quarter, before Amazon, before Moo.com. Paperchase was a growing brand at the time and this was their flagship (even before the TCR store, I think): 2 and a 1/2 floors of stationery, gewgaws and gift stuff. And it's never looked back since. So you want a card for that special someone? Done. A last minute Secret Santa? Your wish is their command. Inappropriately large bits of wedding paraphernalia? They've got your number. As one of those "Ruddy creative types! *tutt*" I have a huge problem when it comes to pretty stationery shops and art shops- I want to spend all of my money on things I don't really need! To make it worse, this place is huge, far bigger than any other paper chase I've been in, as I normally pop in to ones in train stations, or inside selfridges to kill some time and gaze at the prints. The don't just have stationery, they have A COLOUR ORDERED SECTION OF RIBBONS, kitsch crockery, parrot jugs, offensive cards (if you ever need to send me a greeting, make it hilarious or harsh!), bags, tapes, purses, sunglasses, and all those stupid novelty erasers that ten year old me would have been ALL over. I have an addiction for wrapping big piles of presents for people in contrasting pretty papers and tissues and all tied up with bows, and these guys can fuel that too. To make spending your money in here even easier, the staff are lovely too, and can help you find anything you want or need (significant otter valentines card? check!). If you have money, you'll love it, if you don't have money, you'll think you're safe because things are reasonably priced and then have a mild panic attack when you've spent £56.72 on tens of unnecessary but beautiful items when you only came in for a card for Mother's day...pants. read more

Paperchase is the favourite shop of my girlfriend. She loves it in here because there's basically lots of pretty things. Lots of pretty paper. Pretty ribbon to put around the pretty wrapping paper. Pretty pretty pretty. Personally, I don't really get it. Its wrapping paper can be nice and shiny but then it's also quite expensive at a good £3 a roll. You can definitely find cheaper prices elsewhere. But at the same time, I have picked up some pretty good gifts from here and it's worth popping in if you're stuck for present ideas and just need a cool little notebook or trinket. read more

Being an unabashed stationary junkie, I've always had a very soft spot in my heart for Paperchase. I could (and indeed have) spent hours here swooning over notepads, perving over pens and choosing just the right humorous card for a special occasion. This branch of Paperchase is alarmingly large, being spread out over three relatively big floors. This means that if you're not great at self control, you can very easily get carried away and chuck lots of overpriced arts materials into your bag with abandon, only realising when you get to the cashier that you may have accidentally bankrupted yourself. I'm sure I'm not the only one who will tell you that whilst the products on sale here are very high quality, they are pricey - so watch out if you're shopping on a budget. A friend of mine once said that stepping in here is like walking into Howard Moon from The Mighty Boosh's stationary village, and they have a point. If Paperchase ever find themselves being left out of pocket by the recession, might I recommend that they make their very own railway system out of blue tak and paperclips? Paperchase is a true artistic wonderland - and should be a mecca for anyone of a creative bent. Just be sure not to get too carried away when you see how many different colours of felt tip they stock - that way lies madness. read more

Paperchase is a great place to look for that perfect greetings card, as it stocks a whole load of quirky and different products that you wouldn't find in one of the high street chains like Clintons. Aside from cards they sell a whole range of gift and craft materials such as paper (wrapping, writing and painting), diaries, stationary and art equipment. Prices are reasonable though not cheap - however most stuff here is very good value in my opinion, as you're paying for the luxury of being able to choose from a variety of more unique items. Fantastic store for art materials. While it can be a bit pricy as you get carried away chucking stuff into your basket that you never intended on buying particularly the fantastic papers, acrylic sets and lovely bound sketch books on the top floor. Great for art students of all ages or if you've a crafty project. One stop shop definitely if you're making wedding/party stationary. The first floor sells posh pens and office themed gifts and such which I tend to bypass. While the ground floor is devoted much to bright modern cards, pens of all descriptions and tacky but fun plastic gifts and stationary. Excellent selection of quirky Christmas decorations and lovely charity packs of Christmas cards still with bright imagery and neon plastic trees nearer the festive season and dare I say, a great stop in January for the sales. I wouldn't buy my party gear (table sprinkles, poppers, balloons etc) here as they are well over priced and come in ridiculously small quantities, though having said that the wedding stuff and mini sparklers look great. It's tradition that I buy my new diary for the year here as they last a years bashing in my handbag unlike others. Great products which sell themselves. Always offering a fantastic range of stationary lines, there is always bright colours for younger customers looking for something a but funky, but also something very plain and simple for others. The quality of their produdce is very high, hence the somewhat high prices but defientley worth it. Everything stationary is stocked from pens and pencils to note books, ipod cases and shopping bags. I love everything about the place but the price, but for the sheer amount of joy and entertainment I find in looking at colourful bits of paper, matching sets of pencils or cutsie novelty items I think the pricing works out quite well in the end. The Market Street store is a particularly lovely one as it is well spaced across a couple of floors and has helpful and friendly staff. read more

A very large store on three levels. stairs but i cant ever recall seeing a lift, but great if you have children in buggy's in toe. the staff always seem very pleasant. The first floor is things like stols and photoframs, the second floor is pens and gadgets if i recall. the top floor is the one i vist most. they have a wide range of items up there,mostly for people who like to draw. Paperchase is always a wonderful shop, and the bigger the better! As a country bumpkin I've never been in a Paperchase of quite this magnitude (it has 2 whole floors). It was clean, had a nice layout, and tonnes of wonderful products... be careful about impulse buys. The products are good quality and the prices reflect this. The staff were very friendly, although after the 3rd one in 10 minutes came up to ask me if I needed any help it got a bit suspicious. I know I had a suitcase and some bags, but that's because we were in Manchester Piccadilly and I was killing time before my train back to the sticks. Either way, my friend and I concluded they must have thought I was going to try and steal or something? Because they certainly weren't as eager to hover around her! But despite that little issue that made me feel a tad on edge, I had a wonderful browse and ended up buying a cute unicorn eraser, and a mental checklist of possible gifts (for others and myself ;)) read more

When I'm in my artistic mood, I always go to Paper chase to buy my materials. I spend hours in there. It's not a massive place, but when it comes to art, I like to pick, match, look again maybe I've missed something. If you want to send a fancy letter or to buy a great greeting card, this is the right place for you. You can also find agendas, journals, cool pens with different colors. For my boyfriend's b-day, I bought an empty book, in which you can write, put photos, make it the way you wanted. It had a great success. Last time, I bought some pencils, some Japanese paper and few other stuff, to make some greeting cards for my family. They were amazed. So, they sell stuff that is good quality. You won't find a thing that you might say 'oh this is alright, not impressed'. But because they are so awesome, expect to spend a lot of money in there as well. It's not exactly cheap, but not extremely expensive. Fantastic place, with a variety of stuff. Ohhh, stationery. How do I love thee, let me count the ways? Or rather, let me spend 2 hours in Paperchase, when I only went in to buy one red envelope. It is an oft-noted fact in my family that I love a good notebook, resulting in many a good notebook being gifted to me at Christmas, birthday, Solstice, you name it. Because of this, I have a large reserve of unused notebooks, and really need never to buy another. This, however, does not stop me from spending long hours in Paperchase, marvelling over their most recognisable product; the flexible linen-backed journals, with their lovely tactile covers and their thick, cream-coloured pages. These notebooks trump the Moleskine in my book, just as Paperchase trumps all other stationers. There's a feeling of luxury in Paperchase, backed up by the prices, which aren't cheap. But I've always felt that Paperchase's pricing is totally justified; the goods are of the highest quality and it really shows. Manchester's Paperchase is a 3-floor dream. On the ground floor, those beautiful notebooks, the card-making basics and a plethora of fun things such as light-up pencil sharpeners and cutesy lunchboxes. It also holds the card section, which is wide and varied, and has a card for pretty much every occasion and person. The mezzanine level has Paperchase's small but perfectly formed homewares collection, where you can pick up photo frames, really nice keyrings and some seriously cool clocks (pricey but sooooo cool). The top floor is my favourite; art supplies. I am not even remotely arty, but a wander around this spacious hangar of specialist papers and easels and canvases makes me wish I was. My brother considers himself quite the artist, and I've found that Paperchase's sketchbooks are really great value, and he loves them. If the basic card blanks downstairs aren't enough for your card-making needs, the art supplies section has a vast array of transfers, stickers, stencils, decals and more, all waiting to become your next creation. And for those who remember the wonder of Fimo, that weird clay that you'd model then bake in the oven, they have it in pretty much every colour. A trip to Paperchase is always a treat, whether you're just popping in for a new pen, or splashing out on a Karlsson clock. read more

Funky if a bit pricey card and stationery shop at the top of Market Street in central Manchester. They have a large selection of birthday cards from a variety of sources, including the very cool Edward Monkton cards. They also have a good choice of Christmas cards at this time of year, many of the selections include a charity donation. They also carry calendars, journals, paper (as you'd imagine) and some nice Christmas decorations too, its a real carnival of colour in the shop. I often visit the store with my Granddaughter and the staff are unfailingly polite, friendly and helpful, even late on Saturday afternoons. Today I phoned them for information and they explained exactly what I needed to do to obtain the items from their website and added that I can collect them in store. What more could I want? Although there are a few of these Paperchase stores in Central Manchester I prefer this great big one! Aside from it's handy location just a hop and a skip from Deansgate, this store (the 2nd Flagship store to accompany the one on London's Tottenham Court Road) has a number of floors each dedicated to a more specific niche of your arts and crafts requirements. The ground floor is full of excellent, original greeting cards (I purchase the majority of my birthday cards here...unless I forget at the last minute and it's a trip to the local 24 hour supermarket). You want an artistic statement emblazoned across your Granddads 95th birthday card? Then pop in Paperchase. A kinky, cheeky, saucy number for you partner? I'm sure you'll find the one you're after in here sir. Aside from the vast range of greeting cards (in their own sections for ease of locating) they sell a host 'novelty toys', a huge range of innovative stationary range: garish A4 ring bind folder; post ironic cardboard box tidies; chunky crayons; mini crayons; felt tips; home printing paraphernalia; graphic pens and pencils and teen friendly gift packaging. The higher you go in this store the more specialised the products become. They carry a beautiful range of art papers and materials on first and second floors and even without intending to do so you can lose time in this origami palace. The icing on the cake for me, is the wonderfully designed concrete ceiling...if I had the means, I'd add one in my own living room. read more
