The best way to visit here is to take a ferry from nearby cities such as Naples, Sorrento, Amalfi, etc. Otherwise you'll spend close to 1.5 hours driving through some winding and hairpin turns from the nearest airport in Naples. The beach is located about 250 ft. below the closest road that allows cars, so expect to do a lot of hiking as you navigate your way through the tiny pedestrian only streets visiting shops, restaurants, and cafes. Parking is impossible here! Most of the beach here is private, so expect to spend 25 euros to rent a tiny sunbed packed in tightly next to some stranger. The small portion of the beach that is public is filled tightly with tourists marking their spot with a beach towel. The beach itself has tiny pebbles, so be sure to wear water shoes. During the day this place is packed with day trippers visiting. HOWEVER, from the early evening till mid morning you will have the place to yourself and enjoy this natural beauty. I highly recommend renting a boat on the pier and taking it out for a few hours to enjoy the blue waters and gorgeous views. That's the best way to experience this place! Overall I was really impressed the with the beauty of Positano. Such a fun place to visit with gorgeous views, great weather and beautiful crystal clear blue waters. Expect to pay high prices for restaurants and hotels here and dealing with crowds during the day. I definitely can see why the Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful places to visit on the planet!

We walked across the sandy part, which was mostly really fine sand, that retained heat very well. I had to put my sandals back on at one point because it was so hot. Then there's a little area of all stones, which amazed me that people set up their towels on. I would hate to lay on that and it was hard to walk on it without shoes. As you approach the water, it slopes down a lot and turns into a slightly coarser sand than the previous sand. Super interesting and something I haven't really seen before. The free area is much larger than I thought it would be and is surrounded by beach clubs with plentiful chairs. The water was so nice and gentle. I can see why it was full, even though it was fairly cold. There are showers and stuff but they are in the middle of the sand, which I thought was weird. You'd think they'd be closer to the sidewalk. Didn't really matter though. The texture of this sand was easy to remove from your skin, even wet.

Frankly all the beaches on the Amalfi coast are limited in size, this being one of the larger swaths where access is free. Beach goers should plan to arrive early to snag a spot in the warm summer months. Other local destinations include grottos or man-made piers, the former which are more secluded and require dedicated transport, though popular enough to get crowded due to their smaller sizes; the latter are often private and reserved for guests of hotel properties, though a handful are public too. On an afternoon in April, around 70s F outside, I'd consider the beach to be moderately busy, not crowded, especially since rain was in the afternoon forecast, and not really warm enough for many swimmers. There's a large section where lounger chairs with sun umbrellas are laid out, which is managed by a private beach club, and chairs need to be rented, which you can do so in advance online. Prices look to be €30-50 per person per day depending on the club. Not cheap! I was content to take a few steps across the edge of the beach since water-related activities weren't in my itinerary for the day. The picturesque, dramatic views of the water and impending storm clouds were enjoyable! That is ...until I got caught in the downpour of that oncoming rain cloud...no fun to be soaking wet, though at least it wasn't hot! PSA: Recommended to bring some type of water shoes or sturdier footwear since the gravelly beaches aren't ones on which to go barefoot.

It's less crowded and more secluded than the main beach club in Positano. We happened to be staying across the road which was lucky. If not, the beach club actually has a boat that will ferry you over from the main Positano area. The space isn't huge, so be sure to make a reservation in advance. In addition to reserving a chair you can also reserve a time slot to have lunch at the restaurant. 20 euro gets you a chair with a sun shade, a towel and an umbrella. We got there early and had first pick at a seat. If you can, I suggest doing the same. It was really nice to have views of the ocean (instead of another chair) in front of us. But honestly, the beach is so beautiful that there really isn't a bad seat anywhere. A chair also includes waitress service. There is an extensive drink menu with tons of cocktails, spritzes, wines, beers, frozen drinks and smoothies. Prices are very reasonable for a beach club -- cocktails are around 10 and bottles of wine 20. We weren't expecting much for lunch but the restaurant was actually phenomenal. The grilled octopus came with a huge portion and was super fresh. The ravioli pomodoro was perfectly al dente and stuffed with a delicious ricotta cheese. The grilled eggplant was simple and cooked in flavorful olive oil. Lunch was also fairly priced, and service was fast. The seats also overlook the water, so it's a beautiful and relaxing dining setting. Two people can walk away after a full day of fun and sun, eat and drink well, and spend not much over 100 euro. I strongly suggest making sure that your Positano itinerary includes a day to spend relaxing at Bagni. You won't regret it.
