The best way to visit here is to take a ferry from nearby cities such as Naples, Sorrento, Amalfi, etc. Otherwise you'll spend close to 1.5 hours driving through some winding and hairpin turns from the nearest airport in Naples. The beach is located about 250 ft. below the closest road that allows cars, so expect to do a lot of hiking as you navigate your way through the tiny pedestrian only streets visiting shops, restaurants, and cafes. Parking is impossible here! Most of the beach here is private, so expect to spend 25 euros to rent a tiny sunbed packed in tightly next to some stranger. The small portion of the beach that is public is filled tightly with tourists marking their spot with a beach towel. The beach itself has tiny pebbles, so be sure to wear water shoes. During the day this place is packed with day trippers visiting. HOWEVER, from the early evening till mid morning you will have the place to yourself and enjoy this natural beauty. I highly recommend renting a boat on the pier and taking it out for a few hours to enjoy the blue waters and gorgeous views. That's the best way to experience this place! Overall I was really impressed the with the beauty of Positano. Such a fun place to visit with gorgeous views, great weather and beautiful crystal clear blue waters. Expect to pay high prices for restaurants and hotels here and dealing with crowds during the day. I definitely can see why the Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful places to visit on the planet!

Who doesn't like a beach?…read moreThe sand here isn't really sand, it's more like small pebbles, but that doesn't stop avid beach goers from enjoying a picnic, tan, or jog along this short stretch of the azure waterfront in Positano. Frankly all the beaches on the Amalfi coast are limited in size, this being one of the larger swaths where access is free. Beach goers should plan to arrive early to snag a spot in the warm summer months. Other local destinations include grottos or man-made piers, the former which are more secluded and require dedicated transport, though popular enough to get crowded due to their smaller sizes; the latter are often private and reserved for guests of hotel properties, though a handful are public too. On an afternoon in April, around 70s F outside, I'd consider the beach to be moderately busy, not crowded, especially since rain was in the afternoon forecast, and not really warm enough for many swimmers. There's a large section where lounger chairs with sun umbrellas are laid out, which is managed by a private beach club, and chairs need to be rented, which you can do so in advance online. Prices look to be €30-50 per person per day depending on the club. Not cheap! I was content to take a few steps across the edge of the beach since water-related activities weren't in my itinerary for the day. The picturesque, dramatic views of the water and impending storm clouds were enjoyable! That is ...until I got caught in the downpour of that oncoming rain cloud...no fun to be soaking wet, though at least it wasn't hot! PSA: Recommended to bring some type of water shoes or sturdier footwear since the gravelly beaches aren't ones on which to go barefoot.

Then there's a little area of all stones, which amazed me that people set up their towels on. I would hate to lay on that and it was hard to walk on it without shoes. As you approach the water, it slopes down a lot and turns into a slightly coarser sand than the previous sand. Super interesting and something I haven't really seen before. The free area is much larger than I thought it would be and is surrounded by beach clubs with plentiful chairs. The water was so nice and gentle. I can see why it was full, even though it was fairly cold. There are showers and stuff but they are in the middle of the sand, which I thought was weird. You'd think they'd be closer to the sidewalk. Didn't really matter though. The texture of this sand was easy to remove from your skin, even wet.

(Sorry, that will make sense as you read on.) Only accessible via private funicular from the Hotel Le Agavi, or water taxi from the main beach in Positano, The Remmese has it all. You not only have a beautiful look at the water itself and unimpeded angles of the rocky coast toward Positano Beach from the pleasant deck studded with chairs and umbrellas, but if you walk up to the right, you've also got a rocky coastline to walk that you virtually have to yourself. Just look at the photos. But the FOOD. The food is the surprise. In America, beach clubs are places where you are a captive audience held hostage by mediocre kitchens that charge too much money for frozen chicken fingers, poorly made hamburgers, and if you're lucky, fried shrimp or calamari. But if you can only get one thing, you get the Scialatelli. People, listen to me when I tell you this. GET THE SCIALATELLI. This is quite literally one of the best things I have EVER eaten, and I have eaten a lot. I always order different dishes because I love variety, but I got this dish three days in a row. If you've ever had linguini and clams, this is the platonic ideal of that dish, and any other pasta (and everyone knows pasta is the best food you can have). The scialatelli (a long pasta like fettucini or linguini, but rectangular) is obviously homemade and perfect, the tiny clams are fresh and tender, and the cherry tomatoes, parsley and lemon brighten this dish up to become the finest thing you can possibly eat on the Italian coastline or anywhere. Sop up all the sauce with the excellent bread, or drink it, or bring it back to NYC for me, but DO NOT LEAVE without getting the SCIALATELLI. This pasta, a surprisingly affordable bottle of white or rosé, and this view add up to as good a day as you can possibly have in life.

If you have a reservation, they whisk you away on their little shuttle boat from the Lucibello Company pier right in the middle of Spiaggia Grande (Positano's main beach). Calling it a "shuttle" almost feels too ordinary, it's more like a mini Amalfi Coast sea adventure. You bounce over sparkling water, cruise past dramatic cliffs, and for a moment you wonder if you're being transported to a secret beach society that only the very lucky know about (which you really are lol) The ride itself is honestly half the fun. It's scenic, breezy, and just adventurous enough to make you feel like you earned your lunch. When you finally arrive at Arienzo Beach Club, the whole place somehow manages to be lively yet relaxed, with great music, it's the kind of spot where you instantly forget what day it is and consider canceling all responsibilities forever. The food? Absolutely delicious. Fresh, bright, and exactly what you want to eat after a small but heroic 8 minute sea voyage. Every dish felt like it belonged there, with the Mediterranean doing most of the flavor work. And the service was superb.
