We enjoyed our trip with Paradise helicopters and glad we chose them. The ground crew was extremely helpful and informative. The pilot was just playing awesome all the way around, great guy, that caught us up to speed with the cultural side and a great tour guide. Took his Time around Kilauea to make sure both sides of the helicopter got great shots. Flying over the entire island, experiencing the volcanoes, the rainforest, the ranchlands, over 30 waterfalls including some that are 1,000 and 2,000 foot waterfalls. The vantage point to see the entire island, beaches is one of the best things that has ever happened in our lives, this is truly a bucket list that you need to add to your trip. This is the ultimate way to see the island, and we did the big tour that was almost 2 hours. Check your photos and videos as you are taking them. FYI. Depending on the position of the helicopter, sun or overcast will affect on howmuch glare/reflection you get on videos and photos, so you will need to try to take photos from a few different spots and angles near the glass. Practice makes perfect. Add, the soundtrack that plays while he is giving you the history of different spots is a hoot! read more

There was a location mixup and instead of making it right any day throughout our 18 day stay... they would only offer a 50% refund. This was booked on the phone with their reservation center and confirmed 24 hours inaccurately in advance. The mistake was on both of our ends and considering the extremely steep prices..and this being our only honeymoon excursion booked a month in advance they'd offer solutions. They did not. We booked long before the current eruption because we wanted to see the birds eye view.. it was my dream to go in a helicopter in Hawaii! So many reviews had positive experiences so I'm not sure why we did not. My long-standing reservation for a helicopter tour of the volcanos on the Big Island was cancelled by Paradise the night before the tour. So frustrating and disappointing, since the helicopter tour was something my whole family was so looking forward to experiencing. Absolute disappointment. First thing was they didn't check the helicopter prior to loading, and there were lights on that needed to be fixed. We had to unload and it took like over 20 minutes for them to fix it. This should've been done earlier by the crew so we could leave on time. Very disorganized. It wouldn't have been as much an issue had they made UP for the time in flight. But they did NOT. We paid for the 2 hour flight and it was just BARELY over 90 minutes. Total rip-off due to their incompetence. Also, we paid EXTRA for the "upgraded seating". Yeah, another complete waste of money. I was seated facing backwards, with a *tiny* window. Could not see SQUAT out of the other side, and not very much out of my side. Also, if they seat you on the right side of the helicopter, you don't actually exist. The flight goes around the island counter-clockwise, so all the views are on the left side and they only occasionally spin around to give the other side a view. So, overall, a complete waste of money and complete disappointment. read more

AWESOME! So, this was my first helicopter ride. I've always been leery of these things since "way back when" they used to crash a lot. And by "a lot" ... I mean, I heard they did.... as in rumors and second hand knowledge. Anyways... I'm a convert and BIG Fan thanks to Paradise Helicopters and Marco! So... the day started out windy and only got windier. So my nerves were pretty thin by the time we got in the bird, but I was playing it cool. They do the safety briefing prior to going out to the tarmac. It's like a 20 minute affair. It's much more in depth than the one you get on the plane. They warn you of possible motion sickness and give you ginger candy. I'm not prone to this, but wasn't taking any chances so definitely grabbed some ginger candy just in case. The helicopter seating is a pretty tight fit. You don't get to pick your seats. They have to balance the craft so you sit where they tell you. On their helicopters, there are 3 forward seats in the back (2 windows and 1 middle), 2 backward facing seats (both window seats) and 1 seat next to the pilot. I think that's the best seat in the house, and my FIL lucked out and got that seat. Like I said, it's a snug fit. So, I highly recommend you do NOT bring extra stuff like purses or backpacks. Bring your camera and that's all. Our tour was the 2 hour excursion that covered the perimeter of the island. We lifted off and you could barely feel the movement of take-off. (Mind you... it was super windy outside so Marco did an amazing job of keeping it steady and smooth.) While Marco is piloting, he is also your tour guide telling you stories and bits of history. Ask him lots of questions, he's got lots of info to share. We saw whales and lava! Tour was a success! They don't guarantee either, but Marco was determined to find both for us. We circled and zig zagged the lava area for a little bit in pursuit of some lava. And while it was a bit hard to find and see, we found it and he did a few figure 8s over the area so that everyone could see it a couple times. I wanted to do more figure 8s, but I think some of the passengers were getting queasy. I loved it! The waterfalls and coastline are so much different from the air and so much different when you can get up close and personal with a cliffside. Wow! Totally majestic! And as we were boarding they also surprised me with seating me in the front with the pilot, Ryan, for the best view. We went on Valleys and Waterfalls tour and it couldn't have been more thrilling exciting and just absolutely amazing! These guys, Shane, Rick and Ryan, really made my 40th bday super special. Seeing the valleys also gave me ideas for hiking and I drove out to Kohala coast the next day and hiked Waipio valley. I also got a ton of tips from them on what the locals do, where they eat and camping tips in the south near the Volcano. We did the full island tour with Paige in the pilot's seat, and it was one of the best parts of our entire trip. We got to see some lava, which was cool of course, but the highlight (and Paige's favorite too) really is the waterfall valleys on the north side of the Big Island, some of which are only accessible by helicopter. Flying right up into those is just incredible. It felt like you could almost reach out and touch the trees (though Paige assured us they were 200 ft away), and the tops of the valley walls just disappeared into the clouds above us. Mindblowing. Folks who are prone to motion sickness might want to take some dramamine though :) read more

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!!!!! These people have no respect - they are out for your $$ only!!! First they text me the night before my flight to tell me my flight has been rescheduled 40 minutes earlier. I do my part & check in 10 minutes before the time they asked me to. Nothing was said about my flight not taking off on time (new or original) @ check-in. When I walked up to the counter @ the new takeoff time to ask how much longer, I was told of "delays" & instructed to be patient, we are "lucky" to be able to see an eruption It's now 20 minutes AFTER my original flight time. Did a morning flight out of Kona, circle island tour. Really great views, there was some cloud coverage down in the southeast quadrant of the island but it was clear at the volcano. I had the copilot seat and it was comfortable and awesome. My boyfriend was facing backwards by a window knee to knee with another dude. He loved the views but at 6' the leg room was at its limit, so keep that in mind if you're tall. read more

The Circle Island Experience is worth every penny, and then some. I paid for my entire family which consists of 5 people. And also added the co-pilot add-on. The children loved it. We took the doors off Lava and Rainforest Adventure tour and the pilot, Alan, was excellent. Due to heavy cloud cover and rain we were unable to do the complete loop past the Kilauea caldron but had to reverse the course although the return was made as varied as possible. My husband and I, fortunately, sat in the front and enjoyed the whole experience (while the couple in the rear reported it a "miserable" one due to the wind - but that is their review to write.) The reason for four stars instead of five: I arrived wearing a fanny pack containing wallet, phone, etc, which had to be removed in order to accommodate the life vests required to be worn around our waists. While I could have returned it to our locked vehicle, I was assured it would be safe in the office, which I was told, would be occupied and locked in case she had to leave. After the flight, we were directed to return to the office to put back the life vests. We found the office unlocked with no one inside. My fanny pack was on the counter where I left it. This office is adjacent to an airport walkway, easily accessible to the public. I am appalled at the lack of concern and security for valuables I entrusted to their care at their insistence. There was also a wooden locked box on the counter labeled tips for the pilot with only one remaining envelope in the slot next to the box, also easily accessible to anyone wanting to walk off with it. With no effort to secure our belongings and given the sloppy attention to maintaining and securing the tip box, I wonder if those tips even make it to the pilots. read more

Boyfriend and I went on the 3-hour tour, which was enough time to fly over most of the big island, linger above the sea long enough to see some whales, and land for about half an hour. We booked the morning tour, which went from 10 to 1. Check in was at 9 but arriving 9:30 was good enough. They provide free pick up from hotel, but we drove there. The office was pretty easy to find -- it's next to the Kona airport. Parking was free and not a problem at all. Our pilot was Ryan. He was super friendly and helpful. Very responsive to questions and knowledgeable about the island. There were 6 clients in total. Two of them got a little motion sick. There're ginger candies onboard which helped somewhat. There's at least an hour and half of flying until landing, so might not be ideal for people with motion sickness issues. My parents booked a 45-minute tour and they flew doorless over lava lake. It sounds very cool. My mom loved it but my dad got pretty scared. The 3-hour one I went on had doors. It shouldn't be bad as long as you don't have a phobia-level fear of heights. This was the best! We couldn't believe how many things we saw in just one tour. Justin and Keith were our pilots and they did a really amazing job- they were funny, knowledgeable, and very engaging so it was easy to learn about what we were seeing. We saw volcanoes, lava, waterfalls, and even stopped for a picnic lunch on a cliff near one of the waterfalls. This is the best way to see the island all in one day. It's also one of the most exciting, as you fly in a helicopter with the doors off. It's exhilarating!!! You pass over volcanos and waterfalls, and also see dried lava flows and some amazing costal views. One thing I like about Paradise is they have more reasonable rates concerning heavier passengers. My husband was 260, and some places wanted to charge him 2 tickets! I can understand a fuel surcharge, but that's a bit overkill. Paradise charges $25 for the 250 range, and it guarantees you a window seat. (The seats by the windows are larger). Not only is that totally reasonable, but with the doors off, I decided I wanted to be by the window too, and also paid for the upcharge. It was well worth it. The pilot was very knowledgeable and shared a lot with us. He answered all our questions, and banked around so that each person got great photo ops of all the different views. At the end of the flight you get a pic (with your camera) with your pilot and helicopter. Paradise was very easy to work with, but we worked through an Expedia concierge, which may have made it easier. read more

What an experience! We stayed at the Big Island for 6 nights, and I planned this as the first activity on our first full day on the island. What a way to start things off! We were picked up by Paradise Helicopters at our hotel in Kona and driven to the airport by an amiable gentlemen at 6:45 in the morning. We checked in, and after a quick safety talk, review of the route, handing out of ginger candies (for nausea) and a potty break, we boarded the 6-seater helicopter around 8:00. They let you know where to sit, probably based on your weight and if you opted for preferred seating (we did), but there's really no bad seat in the heli since it's so small. We were on the flight with an Asian couple and a couple from Australia, who had done it before but loved it so much they decided to do it again. We chose the Hawaii Experience, and it was nearly 2 hours of awesomeness. Marco, our pilot, was extremely knowledgeable about Hawaii's history and the landscape that we were flying over. He was as excited about the wonderful weather as we were -- not a cloud in the sky! We were truly lucky. Based on what I observed from the big island's weather pattern, I'd recommend doing this flight as early as possible, as it can get quite cloudy in the afternoons. One important note: be sure to heed their advice regarding wearing dark clothing -- if you don't, all of your pictures will just be of your light clothing reflecting on the helicopter's glass! Thankfully, we didn't have to worry about that on our flight. Marco was happy to answer questions during the flight, and gave us so many interesting tidbits about what we were seeing, it was awesome! When we got to the summit of Kilauea, my mind was blow. A flow of lava had just begun 2 days before our flight, and it was amazing to see the quickly flowing lava. Unfortunately that same flow is now threatening to devastate parts of Hawaii :-\ but at the time, it was just incredible to see. Marco is cognizant of the two sides of the plane and always made sure to fly around 360 at good points of interest so that everyone could get a good look and snap some pictures. I began to feel a little nauseated thanks to my stupid self putting my ginger candies in my camera bag, which was then put in the cargo hold of the helicopter before the flight, but no one on my flight got actually sick. It was a relatively smooth ride -- except when Marco picked up the pace big time to show us a crashed B-52 bomber in the forest before the clouds rolled in and covered it -- which he did amazingly, with seconds to spare before there were clouds! It was awesome to see and we all appreciated the effort. The views are breathtaking -- the lava, the volcanoes, the landscape, the waterfalls, the ocean, everything -- Hawaii is beautiful (although the Big Island is not all that lush) and this is the PERFECT way to see it all. Decided to splurge and buy a helicopter tour of the Big Island for my family. You only live once, right? My Local Expedia Expert (provided by hotel) helped me pick the tour, which included a 2-hour tour of the island, plus a valley landing at the base of an amazing 1,200-foot waterfall! The helicopter we took had a capacity of 6, and we shared it with a couple from Australia. You depart from the private area of the Kona airport, where you can see the million $$ private jets that the super rich use to get around. After a brief safety orientation and overview of where would go, we started off at about 7:30am. Our pilot, Steve, was extremely knowledgeable about the island, volcano formation, history of the islands, weather patterns, you name it. He was also extremely considerate and maneuvered in such a way so as to allow the passengers on both sides of the helicopter to get views and opportunity to take pictures. The comfortable headsets allow 2-way communication with the other passengers as well as the pilot, and you can ask questions as you go along. (Uh, mom, when he says your name, you can't just push the button. You have to say "check," otherwise he doesn't know you're there.) The highlight definitely has to be landing in a very narrow spot, but it happens to be at the base of an enormous waterfall. The spray makes the area very cold and windy, but it's still an amazing sight. As you tour the island, you see how the leeward side of the island forms beautiful beaches, but the side facing tradewinds produces huge cliffs and waterfalls. It was my first time to be in a helicopter, so I was very wide-eyed and perhaps the 5-star rating is higher than it should be, but it's still a great experience and one that none of us will soon forget read more

The staff is awesome! They were able to book us same day. The people we were with were friendly and I sat in the middle seat next to my bf so I got to see both sides of the helicopter. I was initially worried but that seat was pretty good. They try to distribute the weight evenly in the helicopter and match people up so the helicopter is even. Marco was awesome and took us close to the lava and we saw real lava up close and person and went to around the top of the volcano. We also saw humpback whales (mom and baby) over the ocean on the way back. 45 minutes is plenty of time in the helicopter. The staff is really awesome. Phenomenal Phenomenal Sunset Aerial Tour hands down!! I was hesitant at first to go with this company because it didn't have as many reviews as other places had but I was very very wrong. My boyfriend and I wanted to do an aerial flight last minute while we were vacationing in Kona and it was 4th of July week, yeah good luck booking a flight. To our surprise and joy, Paradise Helicopters had some openings for their sunset aerial tour and boy were were incredibly fortunate to get a seat!! I would recommend booking in advance to reassure a seat. The rave is all about Kilauea at the moment so we wanted to see it and boy did we ever. I've never ever seen anything like that, Lava moves so quickly!! We flew at about 3k feet and trust me you don't want to get any closer. From the moment we called the staff was wonderful and so helpful. This company cares very much about safety which was such a breath of fresh air for me. Matt our pilot was out of this world amazing. If you get the opportunity to fly with him, its an experience you will never forget. He plays epic very fitting music for the tour and is incredibly informative throughout the tour. He is a very skilled pilot and seeing his skills first hand by sitting in the co pilot seat was unforgettable. You are safe in his hands. The pilot Ryan mage our tour a very pleasant, informative, calm, but exciting adventure. I had to sit in the middle between my hubby and a pregnant gal. I was disappointed at first then I quickly realized I get to see out both sides of the helicopter. I wasn't aware you could pay extra for the cockpit seat, or I would have chosen that seat. The tour was cut a little, due to whether moving in quickly around Hilo. So after getting great visuals of the lava in the crater, we back tracked towards Waimea. Then went to the Waipio Valley. So glad we had that experience of seeing the valley before we took our Jeep down to the ocean. When flying back along the Kona coast, we were able to see a few whales. The other thing I would have done differently was wear dark pants instead of shorts. Any reflection from the windows doesn't allow for perfect shots.
