So you're going to have a kid! That's cool. Among the hundreds of pieces of advice you're going to get, people will also tell you to take a birth class. If you take it at Parent Craft, that was good advice. Our class was small (three couples) and intimate, just the six of us in Casey's home. Casey graduated the nurse-midwifery program at Columbia, and accordingly has lots of letters after her name (CNM, RN, MSN, BSN and LCCE). She is knowledgable, sweet, funny, and a surprisingly gifted actress when it comes to imitating birth sounds. With the RN and the midwifery background (as well as years of experience dealing with intense Park Slope parents), she has both the clinical medical knowledge and the hippie sensibilities that many of us are probably looking for. No judgment either, just education. The one-day intensive birth class was full of useful information. Casey will take you through the whole process (while drawing fun diagrams), and answer all the questions you've [n]ever had about birth balls, spinning babies, water breaking, comfort measures, breathing exercises, positioning, stages, forceps, poop, epidurals, pain medications, episiotomy, hep-locks, cord-clamping, and more. Did I fall asleep during one of the videos AND the guided meditation? Yes, but I don't recommend taking a 7-hour class after a red-eye. Was our entire birth plan was thrown out the window where it was run over by a garbage truck thanks to circumstance? Absolutely. But I'm still glad I learned things here at Parent Craft. I am so grateful I did the newborn and breastfeeding group with Natasha. I'm a new mom, my baby was a few weeks old and I was drowning in questions, loneliness, the need for connection and support. I called Casey to ask about this group I heard about from other new moms and she was like a breath of fresh air. I showed up to the group with five other moms a week later and I knew I was in good hands. This group focused on feeding and just the basic struggles of being a brand new parent and not knowing much at all. I came out of the last group four weeks later a new person. My wife and I took away so much from the one-day crash course. Casey is incredibly knowledgeable, having been in the birth world in NYC for years, and brings technical and practical information to the table -- while being fun and thoughtful about how she presents. We feel much more prepared for labor and delivery, with plans in place for how we'll tackle the rough and the smooth. Other considerations: the class is small, with room for five pairs, which gave everyone individual attention but also the ability to hear from other folks going through the same thing in an intimate, safe setting. I highly recommend the labor and delivery class with Casey! I learned sooooo much. The material was presented in an easy to understand way, but I felt as if everything we covered was very comprehensive. Casey is warm and whip-smart; obviously extremely knowledgeable and experienced, but also realistic about the variables and realities of birth. We not only covered the stages of labor, which demystified the process quite a bit, but we also touched on after-care and feeding, which made me feel so much better prepared for this whole crazy ride. My husband and I came away on the same page and with a direction for what to do next while we wait for our baby to arrive. I'm a big fan of Parent Craft. We took the 4th Trimester class with Leigh Kader and could not have been happier with the experience. Our time with Leigh was WONDERFUL! She is a truly gifted educator and facilitator. What's more, I so appreciated her ability to weave lots of invaluable information and insight together with a real sensitivity and intelligence about the deep anxieties and endless questions first-time parents have. In the sea of "resources" for soon to be parents, so much of it can feel like an attempt to alarm, sell or distract. The Newborn Care class I took here was absolutely perfect. I used everything I learned here so much more than I ever thought I would - those first few days and weeks home with my little one would have been unbelievably overwhelming if I hadn't gone to this class. I took for granted that they would teach about breastfeeding- I didn't think that was the most important part of the class, until the moment I had my baby in my arms! We took the Labor and Birth class and I am so happy we had the opportunity to do it. Casey was incredibly thoughtful, knowledgeable, down to earth, and fun. Going into it I wasn't so sure that we really needed 7 hours of instruction, or even how one might fill that much time. In hindsight, though, the information, perspectives, and question provoking seem completely indispensable. My husband and I are so glad we took Casey's Labor and Delivery class. I feel less anxious and we both feel much more prepared. From the first time I contacted Casey through the whole class, I found her to be so kind and also professional. She certainly knows her stuff! What I really liked was how open she is to whatever the parents chose to do with their birthing plan- she gave us all the info we needed to decide if I'd deliver with or without an epidural, for example. My wife and I came here for Leigh's Fourth Trimester class and it was great. Leigh is such a lovely, engaging person, and her expertise is readily apparent. She's informative and practical, without being remotely "preachy." In addition to getting a realistic picture of what the first few months will look like, we also got hands-on practice with things like swaddling and diaper changing, things us first-timers were grateful for. The class was informative but without scaring us and exactly what we needed! Plus, she gave us access to plenty of resources to browse after. Review of Leigh Kader's Fourth Trimester class. We highly recommend this class! Leigh is an energetic, engaging, and extremely well-rounded teacher. She led our small group through a useful, educational, and interesting progression of what to expect in the fourth trimester, and how to prepare for it. Like most first-time parents, we did not know what to expect from the post partum period; Leigh helped us to envision that period of time, to see ourselves confidently parenting our new baby, and to know how be ready. The class contains a good mix of nuts and bolts skills, and more broad contextual education. You will walk away with a very good idea of what to expect right after birth and through those first months, and what skills you will need to draw upon. Leigh is also very well connected to the care community and can provide excellent recommendations to other providers for specialized needs. You'll be lucky to take this class with Leigh! read more

My husband and I feel so lucky to have fallen into Casey's wonderful world of pregnancy and new parent education. We took both the preconception seed class with her as well as the full day labor and delivery class, and wish there was enough time left in our pregnancy to take the 4th trimester class with her! She held our hand through navigating finding a provider all the way to navigating advocating for ourselves while giving birth. I actually just stumbled upon Parent Craft and Casey through google, as I was late in looking into classes and just rolled the dice on something that was affordable, close and fit into my schedule. I am so glad it worked out! Casey is so supportive and I got so much out of each class and a wonderful packet of info to take home, that has been so helpful! It is a relaxed, comfortable environment- she even gave us snacks :) We were nervous about classes, but knew we needed to take them, and we immediately feel comfortable and looked forward to each class. They were fun, informative and she really catered to our specific groups needs. I highly recommend it! On a side note I will say that I had emailed several places in my original search and she got right back to me, answered questions etc. Where as other classes took a lot longer and were not as helpful via email, so that was an added reason I went with Parent Craft. I loved how the classes were structured and the general ethos of the way things are taught here- there was never any judgement about doing things one way or the other, but instead information is shared that was evidence and research based and personal experience-rooted. My husband and I took Casey's birthing and labor intensive class and while we weren't necessarily freaking out about the prospect of having our first kid, we certainly feel a lot more relaxed about birth/labor after spending the day with Casey. Both Casey and Tia are highly experienced and caring. The classes were small which gave us plenty of ability to get our questions answered and filled with practical information and advice. As a midwife and a doula respectively, the classes definitely have a natural birth and breastfeeding orientation but aren't dogmatic, which I appreciated.
