The soaring tower and spire of John's Lane Church on Thomas Street is one of the great landmarks of Dublin. The tower is unusual in that it is rectangular rather than square in shape. Officially known as St. John the Baptist and St. Augustine, the church's popular name comes from the time when it was proscribed to practice Roman Catholicism and parishioners had to use a clandestine chapel in the adjoining John's Lane. So it is known by locals as John's Lane Church. It was built for the Augustinians between 1862 and 1911. James Pearse, Patrick Pearse's father, was the sculptor of the twelve apostles in the niches around the tower. The architect was Edward Welby Pugin who was assisted by George Coppinger Ashlin. The church stands on the site of Dublin's first hospital, St. John's, founded by the Norseman, Ailgred the Palmer (after whom Palmerstown is named).

On the aptly named Patrick's Street, the cathedral was founded in 1191 and is the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland. Because it's off of Dame St, it's often much quieter than Christ Church- if you try to avoid crowds, it's the perfect place to get a taste of Dublin and Irish history. As much as the church was beautiful on the exterior interior is much grander and more extravagant. The interior was magnificent and definitely held true to the gothic style, There was a lot of marble, dark wood and gold the location of the cathedral is important in two ways. First, the cathedral was built on the same site of a church that was constructed by the King of Scotland. Secondly, the location was chosen because Saint Patrick himself had a well where he baptized early Catholics. If you visit the cathedral today, they have stone slabs on display which were believed to be the entrance to the well. Also, it happens to be the tallest church in Ireland, which is pretty impressive given that the country is full of them.

Built by Sidney Herbert, brother of the Earl of Pembroke and administrator of the Pembroke and Fitzwilliam estates, and opened for worship as a Trustee Church in 1850, the building is a replica of a 13th century church in Normandy, thus making it the only example of Neo-Norman architecture in Dublin from a time when Neo-Gothic was the norm. As part of the Church of Ireland - which is known for its simple liturgies and low-church piety - St John's has been and still is one of the few Anglican-Catholic congregations on this island. Though a small congregation, the entire Mass is sung each Sunday, using the vestments, incense and Sanctus bells so beloved within this tradition. St. John's is also blessed to have the only Stations of the Cross and Monstrance within the Church of Ireland. St. John's is known for welcoming all Sunday visitors over a cup of coffee or tea after Mass.

We were there to visit the relics of Saint Valentine (figuring it was a suitable thing to do on Valentine's Day). We slipped in during mass and found the specific shrine, which was covered in roses and various ribbons from visitors. We lit a candle and signed the guest book before crouching down to see the chest of relics, placed behind glass under the booth, somewhat obscurely. We admired the other shrines, which are quite beautiful, and left as the mass ended. We went into the church shop, hoping to find a candle or pendant of St. Valentine, but surprisingly, all we could find was a card with an image of the shrine. Overall though, a nice experience on the day of love. I'm still very surprised at how relatively unknown this Dublin treasure is!

This was when I was but a callow lad of nineteen summers, and as yet not well-versed in the edicts of cycling around town without getting run over or having your bike nicked. What at didn't know at the time (but you can be fuckin sure that I know it now) is that you need to lock your bike up with TWO, count 'em, TWO different types of lock, as thieves usually only bring a tool for cutting one type around with them at any given time. Went off on a bit of a tangent there. Nice church, shame about the neighbours.

It is beautifully designed both on the inside and out. I popped in on a quiet Monday morning and had the whole church to myself. You can light a candle or sit I. Contemplation. It's an absolutely massive structure tucked in next to a row of Georgian houses that only helps to further off set it from the rest of the area. In fact, it's clearly visible from the Guinness Storehouse's Gravity bar. The uniqueness of this church does not end in it's external beauty. It's also a very popular church for Rathmines parishioners so it might be difficult enough to find a spot in the pews. However, the big draw is the folk mass held on Saturday evenings, in which the usual church music is replaced with a sort of rock and roll band. A kind of hip, cool tribute to the young population of Rathmines. I'd say it's definitely worth a visit even if you're not of the religious persuasion.
