It's mega-cheap!…read more Just come out of my first session at this brand spanking new gym in Leeds, part of the Merrion Market redevelopment and the regeneration of what's become known as the 'Arena Quarter'. I had reservations about signing up for a budget gym, as my main motivation getting me through a workout in the past has been a lovely swim at the end, but as it goes I didn't miss it that much in the end. But enough about me... The gym is lovely and airy and the equipment is all well spaced out. Spread over two floors, the ground floor has tons of cardio equipment - cross trainers, bikes, rowing machines, treadmills. There's even a handful of swanky cross trainers that have an incline feature, and a couple of stair machines that look like mini escalators! As well as all the cardio machines, there are a smattering of weights machines, a couple of powerplates, and a rope pulling machine! Moving downstairs there's a raised area with free weights, more cardio machines, an area with a load of bikes set up for spin classes, a studio area for classes and a large mirrored area for people to use kettlebells, gym balls and other bits and bobs. I haven't done a class yet, but I'm booked in for a step class on Thursday morning and Intro to Kettlebells on Saturday - eek! The class timetable looks ok, there are around 40 classes per week, running in the mornings, lunchtimes and evenings. My only gripe is that the evening classes don't start until after 5pm, and as someone who finishes work at 4pm and has kids to see before bedtime, I'd prefer a few starting 4-4.30pm. Like most budget gyms, this one is open 24 hours, 7 days a week, with staff on site from 6am until 10pm. The front door and the changing rooms are accessed using the PIN number they give you when you join. I went at 6.15am this morning for a workout before work and it was nice and quiet at that time, although by the time I went to shower and change at 7.15 the changing rooms were getting pretty busy. I expect, as it's so central, that 7-9, 12-2 and 4-7 will likely be fairly high-traffic times (my pal Ally who also went there this morning just after me said she had to queue for the showers at 8am), especially at the moment as it's newly opened and people are in the determined just-signed-up phase! Downsides for me: obviously the lack of a pool is a huge negative, but not going to deduct stars for that as it's a budget gym. Where this gym loses a star from me is the complete absence of water fountains! Staying hydrated is SO important when you're working out, so to not supply with free water is a massive black mark for me. Luckily I took a bottle of water along with me anyway this morning, must remember this every time! Another small mini gripe is a lack of tv channels on the screens around the place, there's just a standard 'Pure Gym TV' type channel - other gyms I've been members of in the past have had headphone jacks in the machines so you can choose which channel you'd like to watch and listen to the audio. However, value for money wise, it's difficult to knock. I signed up with the 'early bird' offer so I'm paying £10.99 p/month and the joining fee was £15. Standard price is £17.99 p/month with a £25 joining fee. Given that that is a third of the price I was previously paying at my 'premium' gym, I think it's excellent value. With family commitments it's pretty hard for me to make time for the gym, so even if I only end up going once a week, for that price it's not like I'm just throwing money away. I know those words shouldn't really be uttered in the same breath but it's true. We're talking a very nice place to work out with red bricked walls and the latest gadgets to fight the flab. You've got all your cardio machines and plenty of them. You'll also fine ample weight machines and free weights and very helpful instructors. As for the classes, good news people. If you fancy a serious calorie burner then I can recommend Spinning or if you want to work on the muscles it has to be Body Pump. Good instructors and good music to boot. As for everything else, well the pool area is lush and why not treat yourself to some unwind time in the sauna or spa pool. If you have children make full use of the crèche and they even have a series of health seminars and drop-in sessions. Very nice indeed.

The gym is a compact but they have plenty of kit (mainly free weights). The staff (Chris and Lucy) are super friendly, enthusiastic and very experienced. After a short time they were greeting me by name - which has never happened at any other gym. The workout program's created for me are working really well and I'm heading towards all my goals. I also take part in a circuit training class which is really good fun and certainly gets you fit! If you're fed up of big, impersonal gyms or you're not hitting your targets, give these guys a try. There's no minimal contract which is another big bonus.

They do seem to be a little slow at fixing equipment but plenty of other stuff to move on to. Some of the equipment can be a little hard to adjust is ome of the larger guys have been on before and tightened the adjustment screws a little too much. No need to feel intimidated by either the buff or the beautiful here -wide range of people go with a special area for those wanting to use free-weights and a ladies room for any really self-conscious women. Classes can only be booked on the day and do tend to fill up quickly so you need to be calling as soon as they open. Massive car park and easy access.

Featuing a gym pool, sports hall, squash courts, badmington and even climbing walls. The sports hall is often used for curcuit training and things like that. The changing rooms are very clean and well maintained. All in all this is a good value for money sports centre with plenty of parking.

The Major North is a trail run operated by British Military Fitness twice a year. The course (in…read morethe sprawling Bramham Park estate between Leeds and Wetherby) is littered with all manner of natural and man-made obstacles. Hills, muddy bogs, thick woods, river crossings, rope ladders, hay bales and logs as well as the infamous giant slide, 'spider's web' and dreaded ice crawl. Still interested? If so, read on! It's important to say that these runs aren't focussed on speed or time (though you do receive a timing chip in your race pack to attach to your trainers so you can find out your stats online if you want to). It's about teamwork and challenging yourself. Dozens of BMF instructors are there to help you through the obstacles, from the start of the warm-up right up to the finish line. There are about 10 waves of start times in 15 minute slots which begin at 09:30. Bear it in mind that the later you start, the more people will have run the course and 'muddied it up' even more than usual! I've done it twice now with friends and we've loved it - don't get me wrong it's pretty tough-going in places and you will get dirtier and more soaking-wet-through than you've ever been in your life, but the sense of achievement on finishing is amazing. It's not in the same crazy league as events such as Tough Mudder or IRONMAN where slippery monkey bars, the threat of mild electrocution and leaping over fire are the norm. Rest assured that it's muddy and wet. Extremely so. So dress appropriately with base layers, shorts and a t-shirt together with decent trainers (tied tightly so you don't lose them in a waist-deep bog). You don't need to carry water bottles as there are water-stations along the course. Loads of information can be found on their website but some helpful tips from my experience would be: 1. Arrive at least an hour before your starting time - there will be 100s of people arriving at once and you need to park up on an adjacent field which is about a 10 minute walk away from the warm-up area. 2. Valuables such as car keys can be handed in at a dedicated tent (they mark your ticket number in marker pen on your hand so you can retrieve your items afterwards). 3. There are no on-site showers - bring towels to wipe off the dirt and a change of clothes and shoes. 4. Cover your car seats with bin liners or buy suitable covers. 5. Make sure you stretch afterwards!
