Mr. Tubbs set up a walk through tour before we decided to buy and his first teacher made him feel so welcome with notes on his desk from every child in the class once we did. COVID hit and he had little opportunity to really connect with new friends, but Carlsbad District has maintained getting these kids safely into in-person class as quickly as possible from the beginning. Mrs. Hartman has seen him through this incredibly confusing year (from at home learning to cohort half in and half out learning to full time all kids in class learning). Kudos to a teacher who successfully navigated all the changes for her kids impeccably, softly and efficiently. He says although he misses his friends, whom are still only 10 minutes away :), he is so glad he made the move. He feels welcomed, comfortable, challenged and accomplished. Pacific Rim is a "California distinguished school": "A California Distinguished School is an award given by the California State Board of Education to public schools within the state that best represent exemplary and quality educational programs. I attribute much of what we love about this school to their wonderful principal, Robert Devich. It's the trickle down effect. This principal has ZERO tolerance for bullying. He enforces the rules here with strength, a love of truth, wisdom and compassion. This man is a loving father in his own life and brings that same level of warmth and accessibility to each of the students. He's a very visible presence on campus and coaches the kids (who need extra help) in math during certain lunch times. The caliber of teachers here is terrific. No disgruntled lifers simply treading water until retirement. They have special side programs designed for the kids at every grade level. These teachers are enthusiastic and dedicated to the kids. Some of them even arrive to school early (every single day) to answer homework questions for their students. Unlike the two other (San Diego) elementary schools our children attended, Pacific Rim's outdoor lunch court is sheltered from the elements with protective patio curtains on all sides as well as a roof overhead. from passing birds. This lunch table set up comes in particularly handy on windy or drizzly days. The kids can eat in comfort and their tables are protected from any possibility of insects as well as from droppings of local birds. Workers scrub off and disinfect every single lunch table at the end of each lunchtime. This school boasts excellent test scores. Their carnivals, numerous special events and family night events (tented sleep overs in the game field) are fun for everyone.

We have two different teachers who have different styles but they are fairly consistent in the curriculum (same grade level) and they pay attention to details. They are organized with weekly homework assignments provided at the beginning of the week along with weekly newsletters that spell out the expectations and activities for the week. The parent-teacher communication is great! I love that my kids have a full day of school (just under 6 hours) and have the opportunity to learn a wide variety of subjects and get physically active. The school uses Ki's lunch for it's lunch program so it makes it easy to have healthy, nutritious lunches on the days I don't feel like packing one. I saw a previous review that commented on income disparity. I think this is a factor at any private school that draws from a wide variety of communities and demographics. Yes, there are upper middle class folks and there are working class folks. The school offers financial assistance so that kids from many different income brackets can attend. As far as private schools go, this is probably somewhere in the middle in terms of cost. (I did extensive research for private schools in north county) But I can also say that the teachers are very sensitive to the disparity and try to be considerate of any additional costs for parents. Overall, we are very happy that we chose this school!

Teachers like Mrs Bicum, Mrs Cinors Mrs.Lever, Mrs. Theis, and Mrs. Mackey were caring, dedicated, and genuinely invested in helping him succeed. I will always be grateful for the kindness and effort they showed our family. Unfortunately, our experience changed dramatically in 4th grade. My son struggled with reading and had educational needs that required additional support. Instead of receiving the help and encouragement he needed, it felt like the school gave up on him. He went from being a student who earned B and C grades to receiving failing grades, and we saw very little effort to help him maintain the academic progress he had made over the years. During this time, our family was also wrongly accused by a teacher, which resulted in a report being made to CPS. We found this experience deeply upsetting. We were also concerned to learn that the same teacher allegedly shared private information about our family with other parents without our knowledge, which further damaged our trust in the school community. As parents, we were repeatedly made to feel that our son no longer belonged at the school because of his learning challenges and his need for an IEP. Rather than partnering with us to help him succeed, we felt pressured to find another school. The message we received was that Tri-City Christian was not willing or able to support a child who learned differently. If your child is a strong student who does not require academic accommodations and excels in sports, your experience may be very positive. However, if your child struggles with reading, is behind academically, has an IEP, or may need one in the future, I would strongly encourage you to carefully consider whether this school can provide the support your child deserves. What hurt the most was that this happened at a Christian school. By the end of our time there, I felt embarrassed and unwelcome on campus. Every child deserves patience, encouragement, and support--especially when they are struggling. Sadly, that was not our experience during our final years at Tri-City Christian.

The parking lot at this school is a complete and utter disaster and an accident waiting to happen…read more Parents are cutting each other off and letting their kids out into the parking lot traffic. You see cars speeding and weaving between cars making their way to the middle school. The Vice Principal stands in the middle of the two parking lots (the middle school and elementary parking lots are connected) watching as kids run across in front of cars and hop out of cars where there is a sign saying 'NO DROP-OFF'. A few times you might see him shake his head when viewing these things, but if you think he's going to do more than that you are very mistaken. No emails or letters home about this school's concern for the students' safety and wellbeing regarding their parking lot situation. On a side note, most of my child's 6th grade teachers are very friendly and helpful.

Our kids have never had the "I'm dreading Monday" issues that my husband and I both had at their age. Aviara Oaks Middle School serves grades 6-8 and if considered to be a Gold Ribbon School by the state of California. This school is located directly next door to Aviara Oaks Elementary School and within walking distance of Dove Library. Good to know in case you'd like to let your older kids walk up that way after school for Library time and pick up. This brings me to the one downside of both these great schools---the steep incline to leave their parking areas. We were driving a stick shift and finally realized that not everyone knows to leave a margin of space behind a standard car for roll back on a steep incline. Our car actually rolled into the front end of one waiting right up against our backside. Now we just pick the kids up from the street at the top of the hill on days I'm driving the Diesel. Overall----an exceptional school.

The teachers are loving, they care deeply about the children, and understand how to meet the children with gentle, loving authority. The curriculum includes art, music, lots of games and movement, woodwork, knitting, 2 foreign languages, and of course all the traditional academic subjects. They learn their times tables by jumping rope, they learn languages through singing and stories, and botany on nature walks. They have been screen and tech free for over 100 years and Waldorf graduates go on to do well in High School, University and beyond. I should know, my daughter had a Waldorf education from Kindergarten through High School and is a successful working adult with a great circle of family and friends. Your child will love going to school and will grown into a resilient, confident, capable, kind and accomplished adult. Every morning Mr. Hines stands in front of the school and greets each child by their first name. The first time I witnessed it, I was truly amazed. It was obvious that Mr. Hines cared and took the time to get to know each child and most of the parents. One day I was waiting to pick my son up after school and Mr. Hines was walking by, he stopped and greeted me by name. I was shocked he knew who little ole me was. There is nothing more important then knowing your child is in good hands when you drop them off for school. The teachers are all very passionate about teaching and take the time to get to know the kids in their class. Aviara Oaks feels like our extended family. That's the way it should be! Each grade offers children to work at their own pace, and children can learn curriculum in reading/math up to two grades above each grade they're in without a competitive feel between the children. NO IPADS which is amazing since all public schools use that now as a learning tool and I'd rather my daughter not learn via tapping her finger on a screen. There is an intentional effort to have healthier food options at events, ordered school lunches, birthdays in class, aftercare snacks, but there is also no judgement amongst parents or between admin and parents. They offer extracurricular classes for kids in TK and beyond. My daughter does keyboard and dance once a week after school, and it's really nice, she just stays an extra half hour and I pick her up when it's done, and she LOVES them. The aftercare program has been amazing compared to the other Montessori we went to prior to ECDS. We absolutely love our teachers this year, along with the extracurricular teachers we've met. Ms. Hayes is the new principal but has worked at the school for over 10-15 years, and she is just wonderful, caring, dedicated, and knowledgeable. It's a really good feeling as a parent to have the principal and teachers open and welcoming of communication, and allowing us to be involved with our child's experience at school.
