For a city the size of Potsdam, the size of this park and the number of buildings on its grounds are impressive, clearly constructed centuries ago to be a playground for royalty. Sanssouci Palace was designed and built between 1944-47 for Frederick the Great of Prussia to be a summer palace, in a Rococo style and is rather small with only 10 rooms, more of a casual residence rather than a full-blown palace. The terraced gardens and fountains were modeled after Versailles with grape vines imported from France, with Frederick being a proponent of harmonizing art with nature. The extensive gardens and park grounds were built after the main palace was completed following a similar horticultural theme, entailing planting fruit trees and establishing nurseries, and building a number of smaller reception rooms, temples, decorative buildings, fountains, etc. Ironically even though fountains were built around the park, the systems only fully worked once hydraulic technology advancements allowed broader installation of functional water pumps across the park in the mid-19th century. Further expansion and development occurred under later rulers, when Charlottenhof Palace was built. The park itself is free to visit, though tickets need to be purchased for individual sites within (palaces, picture gallery, Orangerie) or together as a combo ticket--some buildings (including the castles) require timed entry so book in advance for best time selections. Options are available on the website or in person at the ticket counters in Schloß Sanssouci or at the info booths in the park. Walking from east to west, edge to edge of the park can take about 40 minutes walking straight across. However if you're walking around trying to see the various large and small sites, you could spend a full day within the park. The paths are paved, pretty flat, and disability friendly. Not all of the larger buildings have bathrooms so plan accordingly in advance. Sanssouci Palace is on the east side and Neues Palais is on the west side and it's easily ~25-30 mins to walk between the two. Charlottenhof and Orangerieschloß are respectively in the more south and north areas in the park. read more

We took a day trip from Berlin to Potsdam. Other than Sanssouci Palace, I didn't know what else there was to see here. We did see the historic windmills and New Palace. We also had a nice lunch at the Dragon House. The grounds are expansive. We came on a hot day, so we didn't walk around and explore as much as I wish we could've. How stupid if you want to view the building. If you don't know to buy tickets by the windmill, you have to leave to go back. On top of that they separate the main house from the kitchen from a photo gallery as separate tickets all to be purchased in separate areas. Just silly. read more

Absolutely beautiful park, leafy and well-manicured. On a bright November day the autumn colours were stunning. Be aware that the park and palace buildings are currently undergoing major restoration work but that didn't spoil our visit as we hadn't gone with particular plans about what we wanted to see, and I'm sure I will be even more wowed when I visit in the future to see the buildings and gardens restored to their full splendour. It's free to wander through the grounds and admire the building exteriors and views. We arrived into Park Sanssouci station on the train from Berlin and from there it was roughly a five minute walk to the park entrance on the west side (we were also passed by a shuttle bus connecting the train station with the park once we'd already started walking). Large signs with maps on them are usefully placed near the entrances and copies are available to buy too. Once we realised the scale of the park we decided to have a nosey around the Neues Palais and the buildings opposite, then stroll along the long path eastwards, towards Schloss Sanssouci and then out into the town of Potsdam (we travelled back on the train towards Berlin from Potsdam Hauptbahnhof). If you wanted to thoroughly explore all of the buildings it would easily take a day. It's an easy and worthwhile trip to make from Berlin, less than an hour on the train, and if you have an ABC travel ticket your journey is included. read more

What a wonderful park! This is one of my favorite park all time. Even I don't live in Potsdam, I still visit this park time to time, for a nice walk and some fresh air. It doesn't took that much time to travel Berlin to here. And it totally worth it. Sanssouci Park is a large park surrounding Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, it's really big, if you want to walk through the whole park, that could take hours. Inside the park, there are couple famous and beautiful places. Walk through the terracing of the vineyard, the completion of the palace, all the cool structures around. Beautiful garden and giant trees around the path, it surly made it outstanding. Most of people come here for the Sanssouci palace, it's really a beautiful piece. Beside that, Neues Palais, Schloss Charlottenhof and Potsdam university are also here, personal I like the Lustgarten area a lot. Of course, the best time to visit the park, it's summer. Because of the plants. For me, I like it in every seasons. It is just like listening to classical music, it got it own beauty every season. The park isn't far from the Potsdam main railway station. You can either take the bus, which took about 10 mins to get here. Or go on foot, it took around 15-20 mins. If you are visiting this city, there are lot to see on the way. Probably go with the walk it better. This is surely a sight you can't miss in Potsdam. For locals, This is an amazing place just hang around with family or friends, jogging, chat with friends and recharge yourself. read more

This was so beautiful. Gorgeous. The tour through the palace was wonderful, although you had to pay an extra $20 to take photos. Which, I think you're an idiot if you pay. Needless to say we got some good photos :) Beautiful gardens. You need a full day to see everything, and try not to go when it is too hot. We had beer at a small food/espresso cart in the park. I think not many people knew about it, but was next to a creek with reclining chairs to a view only you can dream about! read more

Wow! Park Sanssouci has to be my favourite place in Germany. Located in Potsdam which is a short ride on the S-Bahn from Berlin, Park Sanssouci was the home of the Prussian (later German) royal family. The park is huge and takes hours to walk around. The biggest crowds are around Sanssouci Palace itself but I felt that the Neues Palace was just as good. There were a number of other sites like the windmill and church which are also worth checking out. To walk around the park is free but to go into the different palaces there is a charge. Another plus is that to get to the Park you have to walk through Potsdam which is a lovely place full of nice looking places to grab some food and beer. Well worth the trip! read more

The park surrounding Sanssouci is quite breathtaking, the vast gardens and woodlands are a great place to escape to from the busy Berlin city life. Give yourself a few hours to enjoy them fully while you walk around the buildings contained within. Unlike the Schloss which you have to pay to go into, entrance to the park is free. Bikes are prohibited in the park, although I did see quite a few people flouting this in the areas away from the shloss. read more

A remarkable place to spend a whole day. It's a bit of a hike from Berlin by train but worth it. €19 gets you admission to the park and the palaces which are all awesome. The parks are beautiful, well manicured and provide plenty of shade on a hot day. It's a magical place to visit. After, spend the rest of the day exploiting the scenic town of Pottsdam. Hands down my favorite park! Sanssouci contains beautifully maintained grounds with a wide variety of flowers and other greenery. The different palaces are astounding and beautiful--definitely worth the time to walk around the entire park to see it all. read more

For all tourists, this is written from a native who is born and raised in Potsdam. I often was in Park Sanssouci with parents and friends. I wandered over the whole place and in every season. Everytime I was there I wondered how beautiful it is. The view from above is amazing and in summer the children are playing at the fountain. There are so many places to dicover. You can go to the Orangerie, the Teahouse with golden chinese people as decoration, the roman Bath and Neues Palais. There are little streams, bridges, statues and temples everywhere. It's really fun taking pictures because you find so many spots you like to have a memory of. Please come and enjoy! read more

I visited the grave of the Old Fritz in this lovely Park of Sanssouci. Once the Prussian King issued his last will to be buried in the park next to the graves of his dogs. But his successor refused after his death to do so. It appeared to be inacceptable to bury a Prussian King adjacent to his dogs. His last will was disregarded and the Old Fritz was buried in the Garnisonskirche Potsdam. During World War II Adolf Hitler started to worry about the Old Fritz. He arranged his transfer to the castle Hohenzollern in Hechingen in southern Germany. There he was resting during the cold war in the castle's chapel. At those times it was not acceptable of course to extradite the Old Fritz to the German Democratic Republic. After the reunion, however, cancellor Kohl resumed the pending issue and arranged that the Old Fritz was now finally buried next to his dogs in the Park of Sanssouci according to his last will. People are there laying potatoes on his grave, because the Old Fritz earned also merits on the potatoe. read more
