They cleaned up as they went and did a great final cleanup, looked better than when they started! David is very nice and kept us informed throughout the whole process. They were fast too. We couldn't be happier about our new roof. The price was also excellent and inline with what we expected. We got three estimates ranging from $7000-7900 (and one fourth one for $19,000 from DaBellas and was nuts.). Our roof is 2200 sq feet, I think. Our inside home is 1450 sq feet not including garage. The higher estimate of the three normal ones included better shingles and better materials (underlayment) and was worth it in our opinion and it's what we picked. Less nails needed in the higher end shingle as well which is a plus. Also they had a better warranty. I love that we weren't sold anything we didn't need. No surprise additional fees either. We highly recommend David and his team for any roof. Very pleasant to work with and showed up when they said they would and finished early! That's pretty rare.

However, just two years into living in our 2-1/2 year old home (we're the first and only owners), multiple appliances have failed, parts of the furnace needed replacing (multiple times), the generator constantly malfunctions due to incorrect installation, the tankless hot water heater has had issues AND was installed incorrectly (to the point we've had to have it re-plumbed for simple maintenance), the rain gutters are too small for the home, faucets have broken, and rain water drainage issues have caused damage to our neighbor's property. This list goes on... We feel deceived by Renaissance's apparent corner-cutting during construction, despite charging a premium. If considering them for an existing or custom-built home, caution is advised.

Cascade Painting just finished painting our 2 story house and my husband and I are blown away with…read morehow great a job they did. Our house outer walls are T1-11, a type of grooved plywood. The builder had barely painted and sealed the surface leaving it open to the PNW weather. I was afraid we'd have to put new siding on at great expense because it looked so bad. Sam Mitowski and his crew did a fabulous job prepping the surface and put a second coat of primer on to make sure there was good adherence for the the paint. My neighbors are all impressed and I'm handing Sam's card to anyone who asks. We have more interior work to do and then I'm having the crew back to paint the house's interior. I'd like to note that we've refreshed and sold three homes we've lived in. Sam impressed by his preference to use Benjamin Moore paint. I've seen cheaper paints fade and/or shift color in less than 5 years. There's a reason interior designers/professionals prefer this brand- it's durable and easy to clean. (I do not now nor I have never worked for BM paint. I'm not related to anyone who works or owns stock there. I simply find it the best paint for the purpose. Their primers not only make surfaces take paint better, they save money on more $ paint.)

I did some research and seen the Craftsman Design and Renovation van around the neighborhood. I called and the office person was wonderful and she said the owner would call me back to discuss next steps. Well today I talked to the owner and outlined my process so far. I had mentioned I started my search at Home Depot and had an idea of cabinets and countertops. He said he was a design build firm and people come to them to design, this was said in what I felt was a dismissive tone. The conversations started to take a turn. I said "don't customers have an idea of colors?". He then went to tell me that his company does remodels in the ballpark of 50K. He never asked me the size of my home or my budget. I guess my money is not good enough. I can only imagine the communication on a project if this is how the first impression went. UPDATE: the owner of Craftsman Design and Build got wind of this post and called to make this right. He did sincerely apologize. He called because he wanted this post down/revised. I understand that a bad review here can be hurtful to a business. I use reviews here to learn and choose where to spend my $. I am updating my rating a smidge because he did reach out to me. I DO NOT recommend using for large scale projects. Steve Wilson came recommended by a local…read morerelator and turned out to be an incredible disappointment. He is a handyman trying to get into the business of larger remodels. I want people to know so they don't go through a similar experience. I'm a designer who previously worked for a high-end Design/Build firm and made sure to ask the realtor if this guy would be the right fit for the level of quality and expectations that I am used to. She claimed he's worked on a few large projects for her clients lately that have been satisfied, so we proceeded. We met with him on Jan 8, 2021 and told him whatever project scope we committed to needed to be completed by the end of March because I'm pregnant and due in April. We showed Steve a laundry list of things on the first visit - a kitchen remodel, partial updates to 3 bathrooms and 2 fireplace updates. He gave us a project range from $60K to $100K and we confirmed we were willing to spend that much. The second visit, one week later, he brought his cabinet guy and we talked through the kitchen plan & there was a small section of wall that would make for a much better plan if we were able to remove it. He felt like he knew what could be done structurally & when I asked what sort of cost increase we were looking at for that, he said about $3,500. I immediately contacted my engineer, had him out the next week, invited Steve to attend and had stamped engineering drawings in 1 week. From there, everything fell apart. First he asked me if I wanted to get started right away or go through the permitting process. That was red flag #1. I've never worked with you before, my house is on a steep hill, we're about to spend a substantial amount of money and we're about to change the structural integrity - uh, yes, I want your work to be permitted and inspected to make sure you're doing it right. He was out of town when I received the stamped drawings, so I filed the structural permit with the city myself & kept him copied & in the loop. Cabinet pricing was supposed to be available in 1 week. After not hearing from Steve for 2 weeks, I followed-up only to discover that the cabinet guy had put my file aside claiming he was waiting for drawings from me that I had already sent 2 weeks prior. Steve had dropped the ball and not followed up with the cabinet guy. Red flag #2. I wrote a full Scope of Work so Steve would have something to help him price by and made sure to let him know we needed the pricing broken out so we could decide which projects to tackle. Weeks kept passing by, no response. Red flag #3. He hung up on my last call so I wasn't able to leave a voicemail and didn't respond to my text. Red flag #4 and #5. I had my husband call because I knew Steve didn't have his cell number and he answered immediately, giving excuses, but promising pricing the next day. Several more days passed, still no pricing. My husband followed up again... more excuses. He finally responded today, Feb 24, 2021, after 6 weeks of wasting our time, saying that he cannot meet our deadlines & costs. Mind you, he never provided us with costs on the full scope or various projects - just a verbal $60K to $100K range. It slowly and painfully became clear that he doesn't want to take the time to price large scale jobs because that's not his bread and butter. Everyone does business their own way, but he was fully aware of our situation and tight deadlines and could have easily told us he wasn't the right fit so we could move on to someone that was. Since then, I've researched and discovered he doesn't even have an active license. However, the city of Lake Oswego makes the homeowner sign a document stating that all contractors must be licensed that are filing for permits, which I included in the Scope of Work, so this was probably another reason he was being squirmy. If you have a small job and he can be in and out quickly without doing too much effort in the way of written documentation and contracts, maybe you could give it a try. Otherwise, move along, there are much better resources out there.
