I have been debating eye surgery for years, as I have been completely dependent on glasses and contacts since I was in 6th grade. Because I had both astigmatism and severe nearsightedness in both eyes, the best option for me was a combination of procedures--ICL and LASIK. "EYE" have so much to say that I think it is best to break down my review in pieces: The price-- I knew Dr. Parkhurst was one of the top surgeons in the world for ICL, so I was expecting the price to be outrageous after learning that I would need two procedures. We were pleasantly surprised by the accessibility of the price, especially with the special financing options (including no-interest options). Given the amount of money for my thick glasses (which cost more to make them thinner/non-reflective, etc, ), custom order contacts, contact solution, contact cases, rewetting drops, special contact exams, these procedures will pay themselves off in a short time. The staff--Everyone at Parkhurst Nuvision is extremely helpful, polite, and genuinely excited about helping you get better vision without glasses or contacts. Jeni Defoore, the coordinator for the procedures, is especially sweet and responsive. When I had extra questions after reading through all the forms and couldn't make it to San Antonio for another consultation, Dr. Parkhurst called me on his personal cell phone to carefully address all of my concerns before the procedure. The experience--I had my procedures done in 3 parts: the flaps, the ICLs, and then the LASIK. This was done over the course of several visits. During all of the procedures, they made sure I was as comfortable as possible, they gave me the information I needed before, they talked me through the procedure as it was happening, and they made sure I was comfortable when I left. As a fun bonus, they let me pick the music we listened to during all of the procedures. How cool is that?! Work with local docs--We live 6 hours away from San Antonio, and Parkhurst Nuvision was willing to make the procedures more convenient by allowing me to schedule some of my follow-up appointments with the referring physicians who are closer to our hometown. TWO DOCTORS--Of course, if you're getting a procedure done at Parkhurst Nuvision, Dr. Parkhurst will be involved, but you'll get the bonus medical oversight and expertise of Dr. Medina. Having two doctors looking me over and checking things made me feel even more at ease. Plus, Parkhurst Nuvision is in the same building as a school of optometry, which means there were a few times where students were watching in. This may make some feel less at ease, but I feel that more eyes means more accountability on those doing the work. Of course, Drs. Parkhurst and Medina are both the real deal, so it would have gone the same without extra eyes. It has been just over 6 months since all of my procedures, and I am loving the new life without waking up and searching for glasses, having eyes that are at ease and not being irritated by contacts on the surface, taking a shower and being able to read the bottles without holding them all the way to my face....looking like the REAL me all the time. It's a different world! My mom recently found out she had to get cataract surgery. After my wonderful experience with Dr. Parkhurst (and some of her personal research), she know she wanted him to do her cataract surgery as well. She had to drive from NM to see him, but she knew it was worth it to get the best. She is also now glasses-free!!! We both drove up to San Antonio together just yesterday to do some follow-up vision checks. Things are healing up wonderfully for both of us, and my mom has lower pressure in her eyes than she ever has (and she has low pressure glaucoma, so pressure concerns are always at the top of her mind). To make myself feel better about waiting so long to get the procedure, my husband and I have been joking that the technology had to catch up! I do wish I had done something earlier (I'll be 39 this year, so reading glasses are probably in my near future), but doing it earlier might have meant that I did something different with a different doctor...and I think that would have been a mistake. I had the refractive lens exchange in April, 2016. My immediate results were outstanding. I had worn glasses/contacts since 1980 (but probably needed them well before that), and my eyesight had continually degraded to a -8.50 contact prescription. Then at age 40, I also had to rely on cheaters (+2.50) to basically do anything. I needed them to shower to be able to distinguish the shampoo from the conditioner from the body soap. I needed them to wash dishes. I needed them to eat so I could tell the refried beans from the Spanish rice on my plate. I even needed them to drive because I could not read the buttons on my steering wheel to set the cruise, change the radio station and answer the phone. But most importantly, I am a wedding photographer, and I needed them to see the back of my camera and through my viewfinder to make important setting adjustments on the fly to make proper exposures. Constantly moving the cheaters from my face to the top of my head and back down made a real mess of my hair and I didn't look so professional at the end of a wedding. I was a servant to my contacts and cheaters always having to make sure I had both where ever I went. I was ecstatic to be able to see 20/15 after the surgery and without any need for cheaters either. This was so liberating! A year after the surgery, my eyesight was no longer 20/15 but had only slightly worsened. Glasses were not necessary. The second year after the surgery, my eyesight had declined to the point where glasses were now needed. I was really annoyed that the "investment" in my eyesight had only lasted two years. I was sure that it was going to cost me more money to correct this problem. I called Parkhurst Nuvision the second I drove away from my annual eye exam. I expressed my disgust. They immediately asked me to come in for an evaluation. During the evaluation, they assured me that they could "get me back into the end zone" and that it wouldn't cost me any more of an investment. After you quit smoking, you no longer have to worry about whether or not you have enough cigarettes to last the day or a trip, you don't have to worry if a venue has a designated smoking area, you don't have to worry about if your lighter is about to run out of fluid or if your friend will let you smoke in their house or car. You're FREE! After corrective surgery, you don't have to worry about always having enough contacts to last the vacation, or running out before you order more, you don't have to plant 213 pairs of cheaters around (in desk, by bed, by couch, in kitchen, in purse, in car, in camera bags, etc.) so that you always have a pair, you don't have to fight with sunglasses over your regular glasses, you don't have to remember to remove your contacts before you fall asleep or take a nap, and you don't have to worry about corrupting your eye with some infection. YOU ARE FREE! I wished I had had a corrective surgery much earlier in life. I highly recommend Dr. Parkhurst, his staff and Parkhurst Nuvision! They freed me! read more

Before my procedures, I had severe nearsightedness and slight astigmatism in both eyes. Because of my thin corneas, I had ICL implants to correct the nearsightedness and LASIK to correct the astigmatism. Originally, Dr. Parkhurst's office wasn't my first choice for eye surgery because of the distance. The office in my state was not doing the procedures I needed at the time, so local was not an option. Therefore, I had chosen a location out-of-state that was about 2-3 hours away. Long story short, I decided not to go with them because I felt uncomfortable proceeding forward with them. I called my local eye clinic, and they suggested Parkhurst NuVision in San Antonio. I called Dr. Parkhurst's office explaining my situation, and their coordinator and I consulted back and forth about almost every detail regarding both procedures for weeks. Literally weeks. Because of her very helpful and knowledgable disposition, I knew this office was the one I wanted to go with. Yes, the drive would be 9+ hours, and we would be making multiple trips over the next several weeks, but let me say that every second was worth it. In scheduling two procedures back to back, they were surprisingly extremely understanding about my time-crunch. They adjusted their schedules to accomodate mine, and they made sure I understood what was going to happen. As for the procedures themselves, they were relatively painless. I would say that I experienced the most discomfort in cutting the LASIK flaps, but then again I would definitely trade a night of watery, light-sensitive eyes for a lifetime of the vision I'm experiencing now, a mere 3 weeks after all of the operations. The procedures were quick as well, roughly 5-15 minutes with most of the time dedicated to prep work. I had slightly dry eyes prior to the procedures, but after the LASIK, the dryness had increased. They prescribed two medical eye drops, one steroid and one antibacterial (****for those, I would HIGHLY suggest getting coupons of the generics on GoodRx.com to save a lot of money****) and artificial tears that have drastically reduced the dryness. I experience some halos at night, but hearing from other people who have also gotten LASIK, theirs have disappeared anywhere from 2 weeks to a year. The service was incredible. The staff was extremely friendly and they always took time out of their busy schedules to chat with me. They genuinely love what they do, and it really does show. Even at 8 in the morning, I was happy to be at the office because of their cheerful attitudes. I have been severely nearsighted since I was in second grade. My glasses kept getting stronger and stronger over the years. I started wearing contact lenses when I was in sixth grade, and my prescription continued to get worse. I was a competitive swimmer growing up and I'll never forget how I was the only swimmer on the team who needed prescription swim goggles! It was so embarrassing. My father is a vision correction surgeon and told me from a young age that one day I would be able to have my eyes fixed, but that we needed to make sure my eyes were mature and not developing any more. My eyes became stable by the time I was 18, but he wanted me to wait another year until the Evo ICL was available in the U.S. because that was the best technology for me and my prescription. Once Evo became available I went to see Dr. Parkhurst for my surgery because he is the surgeon my dad recommended. I am so glad I went to Dr. Parkhurst! He and his team were amazing. I felt comfortable the entire time and even though I am very anxious and protective of my eyes I was not scared at all the entire time. It is now two months since my surgery and I am seeing 20/15 and loving every minute of it. As a busy college student contact lenses were always a huge inconvenience. It was a challenge for me to workout, and if I was up late studying sometimes my contacts would be dry and uncomfortable. I see most people say in their reviews that they wish they had their eyes fixed sooner. In my case, I did it as soon as I possibly could and I still wish I could have done it sooner! Dr Parkhurst (Parkhurst Nuvision) was recommended by my optometrist for cataract evaluation and surgery, so I made an appointment with Dr Parkhurst based on her recommendation. Beautiful, futuristic building, with coffee bar and bottled water. Everyone was so friendly, and constantly asked if I wanted a coffee or bottle of water. Several different people gave me different eye tests, and some doctor came in and went over the options (Monofocal IOLs, Multifocal, etc), then I was taken to the finance office (felt like I was at a car dealership) where I was given the cost of the three options. All I wanted was what Medicare would pay for and was told that Medicare would only cover scalpel (no laser), and I would have to pay over $800 for the eyedrops required. Was there almost 4 hours and NEVER saw Dr Parkhurst. So, I went to my Opthalmologist and he recommended Dr Ed Rashid at Eye Associates on Fredericksburg Rd across from Oak Hills Country Club. My long time good friend also had his cataract surgery done by Dr Rashid and highly recommended him. No high pressure like at Parkhurst. I had the cataract surgery done had my final checkup last week and I see 20/15 in each eye with the Monofocal IOLs distance lenses. He used laser (instead of scalpel) and he saved me $3,050 less than Parkhurst. I could not be happier. I've worn glasses/contacts for 61 years, and now I see perfectly with nothing. Only use $1.00 readers (+2.00) for computer work and reading. I totally DO NOT recommend Parkhurst Nuvision. I would give ZERO stars. read more

One of the best surgeons in the world and he's right here in San Antonio! And if you're not in San Antonio, we're a great city to visit while you come for appointments. Fabulous staff too! I can't say enough about them. I've considered LASIK for 10 years and went as far as pre op appointments with other doctors, but backed out because of doubts. There are so many factors for getting the best possible vision and I had only ever been presented with mono vision (correcting one eye for distance and one for reading) prior to meeting Dr Parkhurst. That just didn't sound right to me. Dr Parkhurst and staff took all the time needed to answer questions and listen to what I wanted and I actually understood how and why things would happen. We've completed one eye and I'm ecstatic! I can see road signs and billboards and road graffiti! I can read license plates! I hated contacts and glasses and could function without them, but now I can actually see!! No more blinking a bunch and then rapidly spewing out the first letters that i see as I try to pass my eye test for the DMV. To settle my nerves, we opted to go work on the non dominant eye first. A slower process, but I'm ok with that. Now, we start on the other eye, so my vision will only get better. I know without a doubt that this was the right decision. If you are unsure like I was, give Dr Parkhurst a try. You will not regret it and you will lose nothing but a little of time in a consultation. read more

I've been in glasses since I was 8, but you know how kids can be in school - mean. So, I hid them in my jacket all the time, refusing to wear them. I am a huge chicken and I fear anything involving doctors, surgeries, and needles! But when I went for my annual checkup with Dr. Racoma, she said I had increased pressure in my eyes. She then referred me to Dr. Parkhurst. They gave me a few options and I chose Refractive Lens Exchange because I thought "Hey, no glasses sound awesome to me!". It's been great. I don't have to worry about cataracts later on either. Everybody that I have come in contact with at this office has been super, super nice. It's one of those offices where it's a pleasure to go in, even if it's a doctor's office! When you wear glasses, you are limited on things you can do-- working out, swimming, pretty much any physical activity. I am looking forward to going swimming now. I can even get sunglasses without prescription, the nice stuff! Waking up in the morning and be able to see without trying to find my glasses first is awesome. I'm a writer, so I have to use the computer a lot and it's been easy! I have been recommending everybody to Parkhurst NuVision! I'm a 59 year old sales executive. Around 5-6 years ago started using readers, eventually got glasses that helped with close and mid-range vision. Getting LASIK was the best decision I ever made. It's amazing to be walking around with everything looking 4K. I remember when I first tried getting my license in high school and I failed the vision test. My journey with glasses began. I hated wearing them, they always made my ears hurt. I also would notice my poor vision when I was trying to read the board in school. Contacts were never an option because I cannot touch my eye whatsoever. With Covid it was more annoying having my glasses fog up. I sadly stopped wearing my glasses and really started to see how blurred my vision really was. But now it's so amazing to be able to see so clear and not having to wear any glasses. Since getting LASIK I'm able to do things that before I couldn't. I can now lay in bed and see the TV guide. Wearing glasses since I was 9 and contacts since I was 12 I never truly felt like I could see 20/20. I made the best decision of my life by choosing Dr. Parkhurst to preform my lasik. I had terrible dry eye with my contact lenses and now I'm 1 week post lasik with my eyes feeling SO MUCH BETTER by being way less dry and not as bothered!! Prior to this experience I did have a consult with another eye lasik place in town. During that time I felt like I was at a car dealership. They were super pushy and when I told them I had another referral set up with Parkhurst they told me that they could beat their price. I left not wanting to proceed with a company who belittles another. The moment I walked into Parkhurst NuVision for my consult I was treated like a Queen. At that point to me price did not matter and only experiences did. I had my Lasik done a month ago at Parkhurst and I highly recommend! So much so that now both of my parents had consults for surgeries in the near future. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. I never once felt pressured into the procedure and everything went very smooth. The doctors truly care about how you are doing after procedure and call and text you personally and tell you to call them for any questions or concerns. I was a fighter pilot and started to need glasses after I was 45 and already retired from the military. I was used to having great vision without glasses but it sucks to get old. Since LASIK can't fix presbyopia I was stuck for 20 years. Then I found Parkhurst Nuvision and learned about multifocal lens implants. The procedure was done in the medical suite on both eyes the same day. My vision was cloudy that first day but recovered by the next morning so that I could drive home (90 miles). I was back to 20/15 both eyes, near and far vision. No glasses ever again. I'll never have cataracts. The replacement lenses are thinner than my natural lenses so I'll never have glaucoma. It's been two years now and I'm still very happy about the operation. My wife saw how well I was doing so she jumped on the bandwagon and got rid of her glasses too. The operation is expensive but they have a zero interest financing arrangement to make it affordable for everyone. People will spend more for a vehicle but balk at making a major permanent upgrade to their body! read more

I have worn glasses for about 30 years, over the last 10 years my husband has encouraged me to look at vision correction but I was terrified to let someone do surgery on my eye. Finally decided to go see Parkhurst NuVision. When I first walked in I could see everyone smiling, even through face masks. The ENTIRE staff was so friendly and helpful. This was the best decision ever. Although naturally terrified of having surgery on my eyes, all of the people I interacted with were comforting and professional. Kenneth was great at keeping in touch with me through the COVID quarantine as far as having to reschedule my appointments and getting me set up. Dr Anthony made me feel confident in the prescription that was going into the surgery and took the time to explain everything and make sure I felt good with what was going to happen. Then Dr Mueller did an amazing job with the surgery itself. I'm sure any doctor you see here is wonderful. I wasn't expecting Dr Mueller to do the surgery but the process was quick, painless and went so smoothly. I have the best vision since high school so I'm thoroughly glad and grateful for Dr Mueller and what he's helped me do. I also appreciate the post-surgery text/follow up to make sure everything was going well the next day. Overall, amazing experience. I got ICL surgery and it was the best decision I've ever made. I came from a -4.00 prescription, and from wearing glasses since I was 8 years old and contacts since I was 12 years old. Immediately after the surgery I was able to see, and just a couple hours later my vision got even better. Before my surgery, I could only see 20/30 with my contacts and at my 1 day post-op, I was able to see 20/12 with my ICL's. It feels so good to wake up and SEE. A big thank you to the techs, doctors, and surgeons at Parkhurst NuVision for taking care of me and giving me amazing vision. I remember being so nervous and anxious the day of my surgery, but the nurses reassured me and made me feel so comfortable. The best moment was right after surgery when I was able to read my vital signs on the screen. I no longer need to pack my glasses, extra contacts, a contact case and solution when going on vacation.
