Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês, or Peneda-Gerês National Park in English, or simply Gerês is Portugal's one and only national park, which has their highest level of environmental and ecosystem protections. They have 24 other natural parks that also have levels of protection. Established in 1971, the Peneda-Gerês is quite 'young'. Several small villages continue to live and farm within the boundaries of this ancient land. While Peneda-Gerês won't compete against a place like Yellowstone, it has plenty of charm for its 700+ sq kms. Some things we saw: - Love the fact that villages still live within the boundaries. Their bovines roam freely on the roads. - Wild horses also live and roam freely here. - An ancient wolf trap called Fojo do Lobo - Several waterfalls, a natural pool, and rivers with crystal clear water - Cork trees that are expertly 'skinned' to create cork or lots of wine toppers - Viewpoints, looking at mountains, Caldo River, and villages - Ponte da Cava da Velha, a Roman bridge that was once part of a Roman Road. See the smooth, well-laid lower rim (Roman) contradicting with the irregular slabs and jagged stones above suggesting some remodeling took place during the Medieval times. There is a second name for this bridge - Devil's Bridge, from the Medieval times (including Dark Ages), when they thought only the Devil could have built this bridge. Ha! We did a Viator tour from Porto, picking us up from our hotel. Driver and five guests spent the day together, plus having lunch at one of the villages. read more
