Parwana is another of the not-so-secret secrets of the west side. It has been open for a year or so now, and soon after it opened I got a whole bunch of rave reviews from friends. I'll add my approval to the heap. The Afghani style food has some crossovers with Indian food and the surrounding Middle Eastern cuisines, so I found myself recognising some dishes and being surprised by others. From the outside it doesn't look that great, but the decor inside is simple and pleasant. Kerosene lamps, wooden screens, not too much kitschy schtick (no plastic tablecloths - not that there's anything wrong with that), just enough pictures and lamps that it isn't cavernously empty. The staff are friendly but quiet, and the real puller is of course the food. Think: leek, yoghurt, lamb, lime, mint, caramelised carrot, pistachio, candied orange, basmati rice, lentils, paneer, chutney and naan. Order these things for best results: bolani bread, leek dumplings, qabuli pilau. When I went, the desserts fridge was on the fritz. Friends tell me this is a travesty. My best sources inform me the various rose ice creams and jellies are *the best*. I wouldn't mind trying the gulab jamun - I have a soft spot for these sweet syrupy doughnut-like balls, something my Indian grandfather used to make for me as a child. I'll be back to check dessert out.

While I can say that I enjoy the food here, it was abit on the pricey side for me for the portion size we were given. The food reminded me of a cross between Indian and Lebanese cuisine with the way the bread was made and the meat was cooked. The ambience inside is really cosy, and though the decor is relatively spartan, this seems to add to the whole atmosphere of the place and adds to the dining experience. Service is good and the girl who serves us is friendly though not very talkative. The man who is usually behind the counter says even less, but he's not rude or anything of a sort. From the street, it might not be very obvious that there is a restaurant there so you have to look out for it. There is parking along the street and its recommended that you turn into the street just after before the restaurant to look for parking if you are heading east towards the city down Henley Beach road. Overall, I'm pleased to say that there is a restaurant in Adelaide that sells traditional Afghan food. My only wish would be that they would be abit more affordable or that they would increase their portion sizes. The food is delicious, so I am compelled to spend more in order to satisfy my appetite... hmm, from a business standpoint it all makes sense now.

if you're after ethnic style food or something a little different from fish and chips or pasta stop by Parwana today! Be warned that you'd better make a booking as they are incredibly busy and often assign 'times' to their seating e.g. 6 - 745pm. That said they are incredibly efficient and you won't be sitting for long before being served delicious Afghan food. The little things are also taken care of, there is table water when you sit down and they are more than happy to top up as you go. The wine is byo with $10 corkage - which isn't bad when you can go through a whole bottle with friends at $10 split between you. Now for the food. While the menu is limited with 8 - 10 dishes in total, the high number of people in the restaurant and the size of the smiles on the faces says it all. The food is scrumptious. They have a standard size and a 'main' which is not listed on the menu which costs $4 - $6 extra. I had the lamb kofta which is essentially herb and lamb meatballs in a tomato sauce with onion and garlic. The flavours complement each other brilliantly and I would definitely recommend the dish. While I managed to polish off all of mine (I'm a bit of a piglet) my friend was given a take away container and took hers home for lunch the next day. My other two friends dining with us had the potato qorma which is a potato curry cooked in spices and chilli and the morghe degee which is a large platter with chicken, yoghurt sauce, naan and afghan chutney. We ordered a plate of naan with some cucumber raita which was nice and zesty and as a bit of a tip - add it to the lamb meatballs for another angle on your meal. The whole meal came to $110 (including corkage) which was a fair price for the quality of food, the atmosphere and the experience

    Amazing flavours.

Nice food but often you can't go back to get something you really liked, the menu changes to suit the chef.

You could tell how proud he is of his Lebanese heritage and regaled up with a few stories of Houda, his grandmother and the restaurant's namesake. In addition he helped guide some of our dining choices and we were not disappointed! Houda's serves up tasty, flavourful, and generous portions. My Mother and I were in the neighbourhood and needed a feed. Yelp of course lead me to this fine family restaurant just off Goodwood road. Easily spotted with colourful signage on the road. Sumac staff are quiet, but are really friendly and welcoming. They are very happy to walk you through the menu if you are unsure of what items are. Some of them I had not heard of before. My Mum and I love to sample everything, and there isn't really much we don't like. So we of course went for the Shashlik Platter. It comes with three different styles of Shashlik, hummus, baba ganoush, home-made pickles, tabouli, salad with crispy pita, spiced rice and garlic sauce. All of that for $24.90! So awesome! We actually thought it would be smaller, so we ordered a plate of falafels as well. And yes, we definitely had stuff to take home. My fave on the platter was the hummus, pickles & chicken shashlik. All very flavoursome and well spiced. Wow, that garlic sauce is really intense, but also amazing on the pita bread. The falafels were fresh, but not as fluffy as I would have liked. They were full of fresh herbs though, so that made up for that! A huge menu to choose from, so be prepared to take a while to decide. You will really love this place!

There are a few vego items to choose from, but I think this is more of a meat eating destination. There are a lot of options for you to choose from. Many different styles of grill, bread and accompaniments. You can order large platters for the table to share as well. I went for the mixed grill, that way I get to try a couple of different styles. It was great! Full of flavour, spices, slightly salty and smoky. Everything you want in a kebab. It was served on some really fresh pita and a side of lettuce, tomato and onion. That way you can wrap it up if you like. There was a whole lot of garlic in that meat and sauce too. So, maybe bring some mints to freshen up afterwards. I really liked the service and value here. I might have liked a few choices of sauces to go with my meat. But, it was cooked well and tasted brilliant. This is the type of place you want to go to fill up before a night on the town. Note, if you need to go to the loo, the bathroom around the back of the shop. But, be warned, it is really ewwww...

I don't know why it's called a munooshi - it looks fairly similar to a yiros to me, minus the sticks of anonymous meat twirling around behind the counter. All ingredients are laid out fresh in a sandwhich bar at the front of the shop and you can either get takeaway or sit upstairs in their small dining room. I watched them make the munooshi as the two women cooking consistently yelled at each other from across the room, the guy behind the counter complained that "I leave for one minute and chaos" and I was delighted even before receiving the product. Take 1 large soft pita bread, smother it in tahini, add freshly cooked moist falafel with a crispy exterior, add fresh rocket, tomatoes and cucumber and then smooth the pita bread in half, toast in the grill and wrap up to serve. A lot of my health freak/exercise freak friends frequent the joint regularly. However, my favourite thing about Munooshi is that it is extremely cheap! You can purchase a meal and a drink for little over $10, so it definitely won't break the bank. The café has very limited seating area, so if you plan to go during peak hour (12-1pm) I'd suggest getting take-away. Rymill Park is situated directly across the road, so if it's a nice day, take your munooshi and go and enjoy it in the park!

As for the last time I dined, I said I was very hungry and they charged 4 people $25 each. Bargain! Inclusive of the banquet menu is free BYO. So, what you have to do then is hop out of your seat, run across the road to the Rosemont Hotel street bottle shop and grab something to drink. Or bring something along with you; depends how prepared you are. What you do need to prepare for is the amazing dishes served your way. Now, this is homely traditional Jewish food. So you will be given hummus, tabouli, falafels, koftas, green beans, battered fried cauliflower, etc... But this is the best quality you can get. The Hummus is seasoned perfect with the right amount of acidity. The tabouli is super fresh and delightful. You just want a endless plate of Koftas. The beans are served with a tomato sauce that you need to dip your pita bread in. The Cauliflower has a spiced taste and is cooked perfectly without being broken down and heavy with batter. I could go on and on. As for the service, it is fast. This restaurant is used to being busy, so they produce the food quickly and will continue bringing it out until your table is filled with mouth watering selections. As for the décor, don't let it put you off. It is not about the aesthetics here, it is about the food. I think that this restaurant has looked the same in the last 30+ years. It also looks like it has been around longer than I remember - the place is a little worn, but not gloomy. Like many restaurants that have been around long enough to become an 'institution' in Adelaide, the staff are a little aloof. Actually I think Jerusalem House are almost more famous for the bad service than for the food, but that somehow makes it even more charming, in a Black Books kinda way. I prefer aloof to obsequious, although once they did forget to bring my table any form of cutlery whatsoever. One of the waiters is a ten-year old kid, he is less gruff, more cute. I'm reasonably happy to put my complaints about the service aside, because 1) perfect service makes me feel even more uncomfortable and 2) the food is worth coming back for. It's definitely not fancy, and the portions are regular-sized, not huge, but there is something about it that makes me want to eat it again and again. I would suspect MSG but I think it is more likely to be tahini. Personal favourites: fresh lemon juice (almost too natural, I usually water mine down a little, makes it go further anyway), the rice with lentils and yoghurt (it has a proper name, I forget), and the tahini cauliflower. The cauliflower is so good that my boyfriend made up an imitation recipe that is pretty damn close to the original. I keep buying cauliflowers and leaving them around the kitchen as a hint. I forgot to mention the ceiling has a hilarious imitation tent roof made out of Hessian bags.
