My guess shouldn't be far off lah. Here, you have to order your food at the counter first before you will be issued with a table number. Most tables are small round table for 4. A server will come and confirm your order again before they prepare your food. Oh yeah, before you go to your seats, get your utensils and condiments by the side of the counter near the entrance. So far, we have tried Laksa, Hokkien noodles, Kway tiao and Hainanese Chicken rice. Okie, YMMV, but this is what I think of each so far: Laksa - a bit watery, I like my laksa soup to be more thicker, more coconut milk in it etc. Hokkien noodles- I feel it's a bit dry. I don't like it one bit. Kway tiao - We ordered this twice I remembered. The first time it's wonderful, flavor, saltiness(by the way I don't like my food to be salty) etc wonderful combination. However, the second time, was awful, half the kway tiao was found stucked together, that means, the soy sauce failed to mix properly etc, thus affecting the overall taste. Bugger. Chicken rice - They actually gives a generous amount of chicken for a $8.50 meal. Comes with a soup and rice. Overall, I'm quite fond of the place. I am not a fan of those serve yourself options, with masses of deep fried meat and sugar syrup sauces. I want something that is cooked fresh and with skill. Chinatown Café offers a great selection of healthy simple dishes that are really worth trying. Particularly they are famous for the Hainanese Chicken Rice. You can have either the breast or leg fillets. Also with a side of Asian Greens and clear chicken broth. I have tried a lot of versions around the Market, but they by far do it the best. The sauce is perfectly balanced with salty soy flavour without being overpowering. I would also recommend trying their Singapore Chicken Curry, which is simple, sweet and wholesome. If you are a bit of a curry wuss and a fan of milder versions, this curry is for you. It is not hot, it is all about the cumin and coriander seed flavours. Also, they make a mean Mee Goreng and Kway Teow both packed with fresh prawns, noodles, greens, fish cakes, and shredded chicken and pork. Please note this is what Mee Goreng should taste like. Don't bother with the packet versions; try this one with fresh noodles, tomato and veggies. It is so much better and has no MSG crap, it does not need it. Best part about Chinatown Café is the shear speed in the delivery of your meals and turn over of tables. They pump through the customers so do not be afraid if you see a line. You will get a seat pretty quickly and your meal to follow soon after. Don't forget to get yourself a serving of the two chilli sauces near the cutlery at the front of the store, they go great with your rice and to give your meal that extra kick!

Though their menu charmingly claims they "cook the best Chinese food" and that we "cannot afford to miss it", I suggest you do. We are also advised, "don't forget to pin up our menu in your kitchen" as, wait for it - "it will help the housewife". Naturally I love these pearls of wisdom but can only see this menu being of help to wifey-poo if she is planning on pissing off all around her big-time with bad Chinese food. After driving past this humble shop-front for years, this week I ventured in to road test the theory of the best Chinese food being found in the daggiest of places. Not so. With a revolving door menu of over 150 dishes nothing jumped out at me. I went with the old-school litmus test of special fried rice, and salt and pepper squid. I couldn't see S&P on the menu and hoped it was an oversight on one of our behalves. Nope. I had to ask why. Surely any Chinese restaurant worth its salt and pepper caters for our still rife obsession with this cephalopod dish? The young girl informed me, "when my father took over here it wasn't on the menu and no-one has ever taught him". Ahhh, both sweet and infuriating at the same time. I sucked it up and compromised for some foo yung action - Chinese omelette with crab meat and mushroom. Pity my carry bag got the best of the sauce - here's my own wordly wisdom - when packaging up a wet dish - please seal the lid. Its star ingredient, the crab, did a very good impression of sliced seafood extender. The wheels continued to fall off my road-test after encountering florescent orange shrimps with severe cases of dehydration in the rice. They had the size and appeal of earwigs. Should you want to party with the Lucky Dragon you can get the minimum banquet cost of $35 per person reduced to $30 - if there's 100 of you. You lucky dog. Oh well, you win some, you lose some, and if you're happy to let this dragon take you for a ride, you'll get a smile from her surrounds. They include a wall clock mounted on a pretty etching of some kittens, in a tree (?), and a "Leeds Lemonade" soft drinks fridge who's lived here so long it's turned retro on itself.

It's like stepping into a time warp back to the 80s, the wall is covered in those Chinese drawings your grandma used to have in her house and everything is burgundy coloured from chairs to tablecloth and carpet. I am the master of a good buffet but I was totally off my game here - getting too excited and filling up on bread, noodles and prawn crackers. My tip? Skip the banquet option and go straight for the buffet cabinet of meats and veg. Pick your meats (pork, chicken, lamb, beef) and then pile the veg on high. The most exciting part of the entire process comes next...the MYO Mongolian BBQ sauce station. I'm someone who manages to screw up making a simple balsamic dressing for a salad so I was slightly petrified when presented with 8 bowls of sauce to pour over my bowl of uncooked meat and veg. Don't worry though even Jessica Simpson couldn't screw this one up. Just go gung-ho on the garlic, ginger, cooking wine and soy sauce. But a word of warning...the chili sauce has a sliding scale of anything less than 1 spoon is pathetically mild and anything more than 1 spoon is ridiculously hot. Some little cutie in a chefs outfit stands behind a giant hotplate the entire night waiting for you to bring a bowl of raw meat and veg and then he cooks it up for you with giant chopsticks. Reading this while waiting for the first round of drinks to come out is almost as entertaining as watching your meal prepared in front of you. I advise everyone to do the banquet round, as you make a selection of meat, vegetables and marinate, and the bonus is you can go up as many times as you want.
