I was struggling in my BF journey in the early weeks PP being a first time mom. Struggling. I'm talking cracked nipples, mental breakdowns, low weight for baby, etc. because of this, I really only saw myself BF for 3 months or so. my pediatrician pointed me in the direction of the Pasadena breastfeeding center and told me to contact them as they take my insurance. It was SO easy to set up my information and it was within a day that they reached out and a few hours before I heard from Christina for a consultation. Christina was amazing! I had a baby that wasn't latching, I was exhausted and ready to quit. I needed a slightly different type of help from an IBCLC than most because it was three months before we realized that my baby was having problems feeding because they were underweight. They were feeding frequently and latching well, but really far behind the curve on weight gain. Here's where Christina comes in. I found her here on Yelp, and we spoke over the phone briefly. She started giving me helpful advice right away, and she came over a day or two later. Unlike most people, she had no problem finding me following the directions I gave her, and she even brought her own shoe covers! She put me at ease right away with her affable demeanor and warmth. Christina observed us nursing and weighed the baby, and also observed his gross motor movements and identified a few places where there was room for improvement. She offered to refer me to a pediatric OT/PT or to send me exercises to try with him and we went the DIY route. She noted a few anatomical anomalies the baby has that were making nursing more challenging, recommended a brand of bottle with a nipple that's better suited to my baby's mouth shape, and came up with a feeding plan that's worked for both of us. She even made herself available via text, which came in handy when I had a question. Christina came back two weeks later and the baby had gained a pound! She noted improvement in the gross motor skills and we fine-tuned the plan for the next week or so. Without Christina's expertise I likely would have started supplementing with formula, which is fine but would not address the problems that were leading to the low weight in the first place. I'm extremely grateful to her for her help. Besides, when you're housebound with a new baby, it's delightful to have a funny, extremely knowledgeable fellow parent with fascinating experiences to come by and visit. My second baby was/is not as a voracious eater as my first, and we had significant problems feeding him starting as early as day 2. Nearly in tears, I called Pasadena Breastfeeding Center and even on the phone, Christina gave me a mini consultation over the phone and helped set a plan for the next 24-48hrs until Teresa could meet up with me. This was HUGE and so very helpful; I really appreciated all the time she put into just this phone call even without me committing to a consultation. Once Teresa came over, she was very professional, extraordinarily insightful and encouraging, and we had a plan to help baby nurse and get my milk supply up with a combination of diligent nursing and pumping. She even brought over her own high quality scale to measure how much milk he was taking during a feed. Even within a day or two things started to prove after that, and within a week I was exclusively nursing and had no issues with my milk. And 3 months later the little guy and I are still doing fine with nursing! It's a bummer they don't take my insurance, but it was well worth the out-of-pocket expense for my little one. The best decision I made upon leaving labor & delivery was calling Theresa & Christina. These ladies responded within a few hours to let me know what my insurance covered, what they do, and how soon they could come see my and my newborn. As a new mom I wanted all the help I could get. Christina arrived to our home and immediately made me feel very comfortable. She gave took extra measures to make sure she was COVID safe. (Shoe booties, scrubs, mask, immediate hand washing) She down and chatted with me about my breastfeeding journey and struggles as a new mom. Baby was able to have a feeding while she was present. Christina gave me numerous tips and assistance to make sure breastfeeding was as comfortable as possible for me and baby. In total I was able to have Christina come visit 4 or 5x with full insurance coverage. She also connected me with the weekly breastfeeding group. This was HUGE. These women were going through exactly what I was experiencing and I was truly a blessing to be able to connect with other women in my community. Christina at Pasadena Breastfeeding Center was a game changer in my breastfeeding journey. If it weren't for her and her network of trusted providers, I don't think I could have made it this far breastfeeding my son who is now 5 months old. With her guidance, I now happily breastfeed my son with zero issues. I feel so thankful that the work we did together allowed me to continue on the journey and comfortably provide nourishment for him. I was in excruciating pain for the first 5 weeks of breastfeeding which I knew wasn't normal. I was suffering from milk blebs--incredibly painful blisters, if you're not familiar--clogged ducts, vasospams, the list goes on. Every time I fed my son I was fearful of how painful it would be. I finally stopped googling reasons, and booked an appt with Christina. Within all of 1 minute of being with us, she examined my son and identified the problem: a significant tongue and lip tie. She gently outlined options for us and recommended us to be evaluated by a pediatric dentist who would make the final diagnosis. The pediatric dentist she referred us to was incredible. She was conservative in her options for treatment and given the severity of his ties, was able to perform the frenectomy the same day. We next worked on supporting him through his healing process by seeing an OT and chiropractor, all of which came from Christina's network. These incredible women worked with me and my son to make feeding comfortable, enjoyable, and most of all beneficial for him. Christina also helped us with other feeding issues. On top of the tongue tie, my son was sensitive to the proteins in my breastmilk which caused GI problems for him. Christina had recommendations and resources for how I could manage the sensitivities while not going crazy on a total elimination diet. My son also struggled with taking a bottle given the structural limitations of the tongue tie. After he was healed from the frenectomy, I again turned to Christina who worked with us to achieve successful bottle feedings--a reality I never thought was going to be possible. Christina is an expert in all things related to lactation, but beyond that, she is personable, laid back and understanding in her approach (which as an anxious mother you need in a world of fear-based health providers), encouraging and incredibly supportive. Every time she visited us I looked forward to chatting with her about all things parenting as she effortlessly evaluated us and gave tips on improving feeding. It felt like I was just hanging out with a friend. Fast forward to our first day of daycare and she reached out to check in on how it went! What provider does that!?--one that is thoughtful and actually cares deeply about her clients. That is Christina. I feel so thankful that her kindness and expertise got us to where we are today.
