As a child, we would pay our visit to our dentist at the San Antonio Plaza or SAPA. I didn't like going because I always found it uncomfortable to have another woman who wasn't my mother inspecting my mouth and touching my teeth. When I think about those days where I would lay in horror as she would extract my baby teeth, scrape my teeth to clean them, or perform other dental works, I still cringe. The only thing I looked forward to about going to SAPA was that before visiting the dentist, we would have a meal at La Nuova or get our last ice cream at the grocery then brush our teeth then go to the dentist. I didn't like going to the dentist but I loved the incentive of being able to eat at La Nuova. Decades later, SAPA has been renovated and updated. Now with a Starbucks and other restaurants, its still a place I frequent after mass or even after a visit to the dentist. I like the idea that La Nuova Pasteleria has survived decades. Not only are their food products consistent but they give me a nostalgic and comforting feeling whenever I eat there. The place is warm and cozy with a very simple set up, typical of many Italian trattoria. Fresh pastas are always a favorite and the Vongole, Carbonara, Bolognese, and Raviolis top my list. Appetizers are great and you won't go wrong with any selection. Try the Carpaccio di Manzo and Spinacci Trifolate --- simple yet flavorful. The Risotto alla Marinara is one of the best I come back for, and the Costoletta di vitello with a salad reminds me of Summers in Italia. Its also great to order for take out but of course everything is enjoyed best at this small eatery. It can get full as it has its loyal patrons and regulars so try to call ahead to reserve or be early to grab a table. Very casual yet every flavor in all their dishes shines like a superstar! Service is prompt and you will surely feel right at home! read more
