Such a fun spot to visit! I thought they had a great selection of old and new. I was looking for Captain America in particular and found a vintage issue super close to what I was after. I liked the folks behind the counter, as they seemed to know what they were talking about. I purchased a couple of rarer variant covers that I hadn't found elsewhere. Overall, I think when I was there, the current stock was more modern than older ages, such as silver and bronze. The two variant covers were about twenty percent cheaper than I had seen at other stores. read more

Found a fantastic store with age appropriate comics, an owner that loves what he does, and even a gaming area. Best thing of all is the kindness. Am looking for a good comic presser. I called and spoke with them on the phone and they assured me that they could press my specific books. I drove 4.5 hours and left four books behind. a few days later I got a text that they wouldn't press them. I drove another 4.5 hours to pick up my unpressed books and get a refund. So yesterday I went into Pastimes and had literally one of the worst retail experiences I've ever had. I've spent over a hundred dollars there in the last year here and yet... Was looking to pick up a couple trades...but had to piss like crazy. Looked over and saw a sign on the bathroom door that read "for paying customers only." Not very inviting, but I thought, well, I'm a paying customer and can't hold it, so here goes. Well, one of the 2 main employees literally ran over and started pounding on the door while I'm peeing, yelling about how the bathroom is broken. I told him I'm about done and flushed, no problems at all. At this point he asked me "what are you buying today?" I didn't like that, and asked him if I was being chased out. He responded by saying "I don't like it when people use the bathroom and don't buy anything." I'll spare you the rest of the convo. The other owner pretended like he didn't recognize me and raised his hands as if to say, leave me out of it. I told them I'm not ever coming back. Couldn't be a more unwelcoming environment. This is everything I remember hating about comic book shops as a kid. I felt treated like a kid here. Will be telling everyone I know about my experience. read more

Residing in a strip mall on a random stretch of road, Pastimes is a bit hard to find. Once you spot it in the row of shops, however, it's worth stopping into. There's a lot to look at and they have some good deals. The owner was kind and seemed to enjoy chatting with my boyfriend about different comics and comic movies - they spent a good five minutes talking about different comic values and what to pick up now before it skyrockets and/or flies off the shelf after a movie release. The only thing I didn't care for was that many books were sealed in plastic - probably a boon for serious collectors, but for someone like me who is just along for the ride and likes to browse / look at things I've never seen it was inhibiting. Pastimes is an established comic book and gaming store that has been in the Asheville area for many years. They have a large selection of comic books along with warhammer fantasy and 40k minis, board and card games, and a table top gaming area. They also have a nice range of modeling supplies (mostly geared towards miniarature painting and basing). I have done a lot of business here over the years (at the old and new location) and will continue to do so. read more

Location - Pastimes is located slightly off the beaten path at 175 Weavervile Rd, between Weaverville and Asheville. Parking is located in front of the store. Grade:B Atmosphere- Pastimes is clean, simple, well organized and seems to have a regular gaming community. However, do not bring your kids. The regulars are a salty bunch. Loud cursing and frustrated angst abounds. I overheard a customer make fun of a Down syndrome kid for five to ten minutes while the salespeople laughed, smiled and added color commentary. On another outing, a kid was complaining about how much he hated his "bi***" girlfriend and understood why men beat their women. If you are looking for a more calm, progressive environment where the owner has a handle on the clientele, don't come here. Grade: D+ Knowledge/Customer Service- The customer service here is one of the more personable in the tri state area. The owner was a genuine pleasure as he identified all the books for my set, even negotiating a reasonable price without haggling. Sales are common at Pastimes lowering the price of back issues as much as 50%, well below Guide/Ebay. Grade: A- Quality/Selection- This is the only place within 200 miles and possibly more that bags all new issues. Every new title looks like it just came off the printer. There are no creases, thumb prints from reader copies or spine bends from too many copies shoved into a media holder. However, this also inhibits inspecting the art or checking out the first page to see if the book is worth buying. If you are looking for mainstream big 2 titles they are all here. Indy titles are confined to popular titles and the occasional oddity but nothing obscure or rare. Back issues and reader issues are in good condition and well priced if you can catch one of their many sale specials, which usually occur during a holiday weekend. Like most stores in the area, Pastimes has a slight lack of collector grade, high end Gold, Silver and Bronze age comics. If you are a gamer this seems to be the place in Asheville. Toys and collectibles are also available in small quantities. Grade: B+ (A-=Mainstream, B-=Indy Titles, A-=Trades, B-Back Issues/Collector Issues) Overall: The Good: Great selection of mainstream titles, games, reader copies and trade books. The not so Good: Small selection of key collector issues, hot issues, silver age etc. Owner does not handle offensive, discriminatory or foul language from regulars. Overall Grade: B- read more

Great place and I highly recommend it to anyone in the area that might be interested in comics or picking the hobby back up. The owners are great, down to earth guys who will do whatever they can to help you learn, catch up on storylines, recommend good reads, and whatever else you might need. It has the most genuine comic atmosphere around where readers can go and immerse themselves in engaging conversations about comics and movies. PS, who does that Chance R. They're really good about ordering stuff (#1's and trades, hardcovers in time for Xmas) and they're super friendly to newcomers. Zero comic book snobbery here. The store itself is decent. They have a large selection of comics and graphic novels, and gaming whatnots. However, the people in the store have, on my few visits, been incredibly rude. They treat full grown adults who have been life-long comic fans like lesser beings. They don't take the time to treat you like a valued customer; rather, they treat you like a huge annoyance. Rather than answer a few simple questions my friend had, the employee I dealt with chose to flaunt his supposed superiority in an incredibly egotistical and rude way. I will not return to this store. I will not suggest this store to anyone. If this is the way this business is run, I cannot understand how they have any repeat customers. read more
