But the person that handles the preauthorization is HORRIBLE!! I was scheduled to have a procedure and was not told that the insurance had not approved it until I was checking in to have it done. Her reason was that my insurance company could not find me in their system. So my wife called our insurance company and they called the office and talked with the woman who does the preauthorizations. They told her what they needed. The paperwork was faxed to the office. This was all started on the 11th of August. I have called every week in hopes that the paperwork has been done. I have left several messages for her and none have been returned. So I call today and finally get her on the phone only to have her tell me that she has never talked to my insurance company and that she has not received any paperwork. My wife was literally on the phone when the insurance called her. I hate to call anyone a liar but she is definitely one. IShe was so rude that I lost my cool. Then she hung up the phone on me. I am sitting here typing this review the day after my last procedure with no low back pain and just a little stiffness in my low back. The front desk staff is very professional, friendly, patient and helps me with scheduling all my appointments and filling out paperwork. Miss Ashley (nurse practitioner) has been a great help, especially being so patient with my many questions and repeat questions. Her knowledge and expertise regarding my chronic pain is the best. Mark and Lupe (medical assistants) are terrific. Every visit at the APRI clinic has been timely, efficient, positive, and most importantly FUN. Dr. A is my favorite type of physician, listening to me and my concerns, alleviates any stress that I may have with procedures, extremely caring and bedside manner is just perfect for me......FUN and helps relieve any stress pre and post procedures. I highly recommend Dr. A and his staff at the Advanced Pain Relief Institute for anyone experiencing pain, especially chronic pain. This review is about billing department, NOT the excellent Dr. Hirsch or PA Senisi, who are both…read morefive star Clinicians. I have been with STSC for three or four years. I have arthritis in my sacroiliac joints, and as Dr. Hirsch has said, "Really bad hips". Over the past couple of years we've tried everything (steroid shots, etc.) until it was time to go big and burn the nerves in my lower back. The problem is that my insurance provider, Tricare, wouldn't approve the procedure. SO, when Humana became TriWest last year for certain people, Dr. Hirsch wrote an appeal letter, and the procedure was approved. It was approved in early September 2025, and, per the TriWest representatives I've talked to, a copy of the approval letter containing the codes they approved for billing was sent to STSC a couple days later. The problem starts the week before the procedure, where I re-read the approval letter and realized I didn't contact the clinic to make an appointment. However, when I spoke to someone at the clinic, they told me everything was fine, and I didn't need to bring my letter with me on the day of the procedure. I need to note that for a full month before the procedure, I was in INCREDIBLE pain that NOTHING would help, so to say I was both in pain and relieved when the day of the appointment came around would be an understatement. So, apparently, clinic staff told me, while I was in a fog of pain and Xanax, that this would be a "self pay" procedure. I don't remember that, but I wouldn't doubt that I initialed it. The procedure is done, and it helped SO MUCH! I was incredibly thankful until a bill of $1,500 appeared in my inbox, and I noticed that TriWest had NOT been billed. I started communicating through the STSC portal, and the lady I was talking to agreed to bill TriWest. However, a few days later I got another bill informing me that TriWest had only paid $50. Frustrated, I called TriWest again, and they told me that STSC had billed with the wrong codes, and that they could only pay something billed to those exact codes. I went ahead and aske the lady I was speaking to please re-bill with the correct codes, and her response was literally, "we are not changing our codes. I am sorry for the confusion. Please contact the billing office to make arrangements for payment of the balance due. Thank you." SO, long story short, I have to pay $1,500 because they seem to have lost my paperwork (thus the whole "self pay" thing), and didn't let me know that they cannot bill the codes that TriWest approved. This has been stressful AF, and while I love Dr. Hirsch, and PA Senisi, I have to think long and hard if I will ever go back, because of the incompetence of at least some of their staff...and sadly enough, 37 other one star reviews seem to show that this lack of giving a damn about the patients runs rife at South Texas Spinal Clinic.

I called on May 18, 2026, after I had not heard anything from anyone, only to find out that the only doctor that can help her with injection therapy does not accept her insurance. It would have been nice if the referral department would have given me or the referring doctor a call as soon as they received the referral. They definitely do no care about people who are suffering and in pain. I should have known better! My mother has been there in the past and she was once given an appointment at 8:00 AM for a day that they were closed (Battle of Flowers Parade).
