My son had his first haircut here at around 21 months. It was busy when we got there on a Saturday morning (they don't take appointments), but things moved fast and we were seen really quickly. I didn't even have time to finish reading my son his story. They were prepared with either a booster or to let me sit and hold my son, and we had to do the second option. Patrick very kindly supplied a cape for me as well. As far as the cut, Patrick did a great job moving fast and doing it well. He talked us through options - it never occurred to me my toddler could have a style instead of just shorter hair, haha, until we got there - and we went with one we liked but wouldn't have thought possible for a toddler. Patrick made sure we were happy and supplied us with a first haircut certificate. My son was nervous at points, but never actually got upset. Patrick has a great temperament for dealing with parents and kids, and it was an awesome experience that I would recommend to anyone. For reference, my son's cut was $22 before tip. read more

Remember the old-school barber shop your Dad took you to? Stuck in the 50s, with Sinatra playing on a tinny radio, autographed pictures of Mel Tormé, Mickey Rooney, and Leo Durocher on the wall, a stack of Playboys and Popular Science, and the smell of menthol and aqua velva fighting it out. Patrick's is the modern update of this shop, in that it is stuck in the 90s. Metal and contemporary rock playing on the stereo, autographed photos of Ace Frehley, Tom Hanks, and Pat Riley on the wall, stacks of GQ and Sports Illustrated, purple neon fighting with the smell of hair gel. This noted, we came on a three-chair day that was quite busy so I got to watch a lot of heads getting cut before I had my entire crew sheared, and the cuts are, yes, a cut above average, and you pay for it ($18 vs. the fairly standard $14 in other shops). I'd say if you want to look sharp, this is the place to go in old Nisky/Upper Union, because the extra $4 is fairly apparent in the quality. The stylists (barbers? hard to say where that line is in this shop, it's a male-oriented barber, not a salon) were very patient with the kids and took a great deal of care on little grooming details. Sam S is a ridiculous idiot. If you show up a few minutes before 8am, you're already 5th in line because this barbershop is SO good, people start lining up a half hour before they even open. Patrick has been cutting my hair since '94 (before he even opened his own shop) and there is nobody better at his craft or more professional...plus, he doesn't take appointments so if someone went ahead of your kid, it's because they got there before you and your kid. I told my barber, Nick, about my hair sticking issues and instead of just cutting my hair he calls over another barber and they discuss the best approach/style for my hair to ensure that it doesn't stick up. The owner also chimed in with alternative styles that would suite my hair type and ensure that my hair wont stick up. End result is that my hair looks great and it doesn't stick up. Upon entering the barber shop, I was greeted by both Nick and the owner Patrick. They were both very professional while still keeping the experience relaxed and fun. But more importantly, Nick did a fantastic job with both my haircut and beard trim. He was very attentive, his detailing work was excellent, and it only cost me $26 for both the haircut and beard trim. I am a native of the Capital District who has lived out of state for many years. Two months ago, I came back to Schenectady to care for my mom after she broke her hip. A few weeks after arriving, i was in need of my regular high and tight hair cut and tried a popular national chain. $22 later I left knowing that I would need to find a skilled professional to correct what looked like I had a $5 hair cut at Crossgates in 1986.
