I'm a little on the fence here but after three haircuts on three different heads, Ed's doesn't pass the "would I go back there again?" test. So down to two stars it goes. A number of the better barbers from a few years ago broke away to set up their own shop elsewhere in town, and the parade of haircutters left over is very hit or miss as far as quality. This is a serious old-school shop; Ed himself has long since departed the mortal coil, and the location has shifted, but I think this has been in business in one form or another for decades. As such, standard guy-cuts only. The seating area is limited in the waiting area, a real downtick, and parking in the back is less than convenient in the winter months. I have two problem kids for haircuts; one is special needs and literally cannot stay still due to a neurological issue, the other has an odd-shaped head. I don't micromanage their haircuts since I realize they're already problems, but in return (and for the healthy tip I always leave) I expect they'll comply with my general requests and then work with the kid to get a good-looking haircut. Well, without getting into gory details, I got badly-feathered bangs on both kids when I asked for something completely different, and the one who requires patience actually got barked at by the barber despite my explaining the situation. For my own two attempts at getting shorn here, I ended up with an uneven patch in the back on the first visit and a strange kind of monks' cut the other occasion. The last visit was the last straw - I couldn't decide whether the cuts looked more like they had been done by Ed Wood or Mr. Ed. I have heard from some people who like the cuts here, and it has certainly always been busy, so obviously my experience may be the exception. But with quality control and consistency problems, and the risk of being downgraded from the nerd patrol to the dweeb squad me and my crew always run when we get a bad haircut - just can't risk Ed's. read more

He must have been drunk to give my husband such a horrible haircut. My husband asked for a trim, not to go shorter than 1/4". He took a buzzer to the bottom half, then had no transition to the top half, with a fro on the sides of his head. Then he went to trim the bangs - they were crooked and choppy, with one side much longer than the other. And a chunk missing out of the top of his head. The guy kept yawning and stretching - it was 10:30am! Don't waste your money. Can't believe this guy has a license. read more

I've gotten numerous haircuts over the years and not one was less than superb. What a fantastic place! They provided my family with a traditional barbering experience like no other. By far the best barbershop in the area. This place is a must, they offer the best service for your money hands down! Professional, clean and courteous. I walked in with my four year old son and my adult brother who is physically handicap. Paul instantly approached us and was so helpful with my brothers disabilities and my son's lack of attention. Paul was outstanding, he had us in and out in about 30 minutes with smiles and the best haircuts my son and brother probably EVER had! While I was waiting for my family, I was very impressed on how the other customers were happy with their services by Ryan, Mike and Nathan. Not to mention the owner, Ralph greeted us and made us feel instantly comfortable, which in return makes me feel comfortable spending my time and money! This place used to hire great barbers. However, they have recently replaced their experienced staff with kids just out of barber school. I just got the worst haircut of my life. People with office jobs should avoid this place like the plague. Unless you're looking for some sort of spiked punk-rock hair cut, this isn't your place any more. read more

I live locally, and have been trying out various shops in the area. I stopped in here a few months back, got a very good cut, and thought to remember to return. I noticed at the time that there were about a half dozen barbers there, which meant the wait would not be too long, either. A good thing, as there are only a few chairs at the front of the shop, and I didn't want to stand at the door. Well, I returned to Ed's yesterday, as I had a lot on my plate and needed a decent cut for a dinner I was to go to. I didn't have to wait more than about ten seconds before I was in the chair. Wonderful, but it all went downhill from there. I instructed the barber that I wanted a cut, but a longer winter cut, as it's not spring yet. I was specific about layering on the sides and thinning up at the crown as my hair tends to be fairly thick there. The barber, who I am fairly convinced was on some kind of medication (I am serious about that), proceeded to use his electric trimmer to trim up the sides, and then basically chopped the rest off the top. No real layering or thinning at all. As he worked, a couple of the other barbers would walk behind him, monitoring his progress, which fed my fear that things weren't going well. One barber made some suggestions to him in a low voice, about how he could speed up the process. My barber continued to plod along, and it was clear to me that this guy didn't know what he was doing. Finally, one of the older barbers with dark hair came over and finished me up. At that point is was his attempt at damage control. My barber was there watching, while being coached about reading the cowlick of hair, not wetting it first, etc. Now I really understood I was a failed experiment, and the older barber was trying to fix what he could. Unfortunately, you can't put hair back. I paid and left. After moussing today, I can tell you I am embarrassed to leave the house. The cut is lopsided, way too short, sticking out (even with the mousse), and the chop lines on one side remind me of Moe from the three stooges. Thank God this will eventually grow out, but the cut is way too short now to fix it right, unless I wish to get an Army cut. And I don't. That insult was bad enough, but when I went to leave, there was no apology, no discount. Nothing. It is easily the worst haircut I have ever had, and I am in my sixties so I have had a lot of haircuts. Mistakes as bad as this should be compensated for. I should not have been charged at all, and should have gotten a coupon for a free cut in addition to that, plus an apology. Nothing. Ed's has no right to charge customers to be worked on by people who are obviously learning how to cut hair. It sullies the reputation of the entire shop. Like others on this post, I can't risk going back to a place that doesn't police their own. Totally unprofessional. I am going back to the guy in Scotia who cuts hair correctly (takes his time getting it right but charges a lot less). Sorry guys, $17 is not a good number for a decent haircut, let alone a horrible one, when I can get a great one for $12. Good luck, Ed's.
