When I was checking my order I noticed I was missing my taco burgers so I pulled to the side and walked up to the front take out window and nicely told the young girl that I accidentally didn't get my taco burgers and showed her my receipt. We've been loyal patrons of Pat's Twin Cronnie in Portales for three years now. That's three years of solid eats, questionable greetings, and the kind of customer service that makes you wonder if you accidentally walked into a DMV. But today? Today was different. For the first time ever, we were greeted by a unicorn in human form--Cori at the counter. She smiled. She was kind. She made eye contact without looking like she was being held hostage. It was a moment. I almost dropped my fried dill pickle in shock (which, by the way, is a crispy little slice of heaven and deserves its own fan club). Everyone else over the years has been... well, let's just say they've got the charm of a wet sock. Not rude, exactly--just consistently channeling their inner butthead. But Cori? She brought the sunshine. If Pat's could clone her, they'd be unstoppable. So yes, the food's still great (those pickles, y'all), but now there's hope that the service might catch up. Most of this review will be negative worthy of a 1 or 2 star, but the actual food itself once you get it is exceptional and definitely in the area of a 4 or 5 star review. Let me explain. When you first pull up the drive in window on the backside is not clearly marked and appears closed. Instead you have to park, get out off your car and walk to the street facing walk up window. There is awnings or anything to provide shade and once you have made your order there are no benches or seating to wait for your food. It is the middle of summer here and standing outside waiting for the food to be called with no cover was an ordeal. The ladies taking our order were some of the rudest people I have interacted with here in New Mexico making every interaction seem like a major inconvenience including ordering. Once the food came the milk shakes were so thick they were basically just soft serve in a cup which would be fine except they don't have milk shake straws! The straws they do have are so thin that is is difficult to even soda through them and they don't even provide straws with their milk shakes, they give you spoons and they seemed out surprised and put out when I requested a straw. Like I said, the food once you get it is good but depending on the temperature outside and the complexity of your order this may not be a place worth the wait. read more

We stopped by Pat's for something sweet on the way home from dinner. It was okay. There was good sized line of people, which made us think it would be really good. All of us ended up just getting a chocolate/vanilla soft serve twist in a cone. It was a large swirl, but the ice cream was disappointing. It was kind of icy and not so creamy. The flavor of vanilla and chocolate was bland. It was also almost too cold. All of us complained of our gums freezing when taking bites. Pat's is a local staple in Portales and comes highly recommended by the local residents. Always see a crowd of people during lunch or dinner time hours waiting for their food. Very similar to The Hat's style of food/ordering - no tables or chairs, so most of the time customers take the food to-go or eat in their cars. I was told that their tater tots with chili and cheese, mozzarella cheese sticks, and green chile cheese burger are really good. But seeing from the reviews, it seems like their shakes, malts, and cyclones are also incredibly popular as well! It was a necessity that I try the milkshake or ice cream before I left Portales. Coming back from a last minute trip to Lubbock, we stopped by Pat's to get some ice cream before calling it a day. I tried the butterscotch ice cream in a small cup, but what was given to me was a huge Styrofoam cup filled with ice cream. It was super creamy and soft, but tasted more like vanilla with butterscotch drizzled around the ice cream. However, after sticking the ice cream in the freezer for awhile and eating it later, it became super thick and heavy, and started to taste like Play-doh. I think you have to eat it right away or else it doesn't taste fresh anymore. My friend said her chocolate ice cream was good and fulfilled her chocolate craving! Food-wise, if you plan to order from Pat's, give yourself some cushion time because they do take awhile before they call your number to give you your food. The tater tots with chili and cheese - it was pretty good; I definitely regretted eating it once I finished, but I thought there was a good amount of chili and cheese on top of the tater tots that most of the potatoes were covered. Eating it relatively soon is key or else everything becomes mushy. I also tried the regular green chile burger without cheese - I don't think I remember it tasting too out of the ordinary. It really resembled a regular chili burger. Taste was good, and overall the burger was super filling. The tater tots and burger were probably not the healthiest meal for me, but I do think it's a good indulgent meal to have every so often! I can see why it's pretty popular in Portales. tl;dr - Solid take-out food at pretty cheap prices. Recommend the tater tots and the burgers. I wasn't able to try the Cyclones or milkshakes, but I've heard good things about those items as well! Minimum order of $5 in order to use credit card I believe. read more

Because I can tend to be an obsessive health nut, and am lactose intolerant I do admit I was avoiding this place. Friends and locals kept telling me the milkshakes were super good! Well, low and behold one day after dinner and drinks in Portales with some friends I was on my way back to Clovis. I was craving something sweet and thought it was time to finally try this place and have one of their famous milkshakes. Oh. My. God. Their milkshakes are spectacular! It has a frozen/yogurt ish texture and isn't too sweet. I got the peanut butter banana, and once in a whole when is spoon it out id get to enjoy little pieces of banana or a swirl of peanut butter. TL/DR: Music is too loud to place correct orders. Terrible customer service. The absolute worst customer service. The music is too loud for the person on the phone to hear, but that is the only ordering method. Having to repeat yourself more than 20 times gets frustrating. The person also didn't know what items the menu had. When we went to go pick up our food the girl in the drive through basically threw the food at us. My family goes here alot, and I admit its our favorite burger place in town. The Peanut Bitter shake is a classic here, and my wife loves them. My favorite is the Green Chilli Cheeseburger with extra crispy chilli cheese fries. You do have to request the fries be made crispy or extra crispy as they use krinkle cut fries here which mostly stay soft with a little crispness to them. Thats just how Krinkle cut fries are however so if you want them to be super crisp you have to request it as you're essentially wanting them burnt. I recomend the chili which is a sort of cross betweem Texas style chili thanks to the spice, and old fashioned Cincinnati hotdog sauce. Which having grown up in the Midwest I can really get into. Also whie it isnt high brow the frito pie is a good homestyle comfort food. and guilty pleasure. The biggest guilty pleasure here though for me and.my kids is the deep fried cheese stick, a corn dog battered peice of cheese thats deepfried so its crunchy and sweet on the outside, and molten lava cheesy goodness om the inside. The twin Cronnie is a staple in Portales! It sits right on the main drag - So most people will park at Pats after cruising or after a night out. They have great shakes and their taco burger is rockin. A taco burger is a hamburger patty on a hard shell corn tortilla , with chili, lettuce, tomato , and red hot. Good texture- good flavor- definitely southwest.. and yummy. I am not crazy about some of their deep fried stuff as when I have it tastes like it was fried in old grease. But if you go to Pat's then you definitely have to try one of their world famous shakes (delish) Is wishing now that I could have a taco burger and a shake! read more

Besides the brewery, this is the only restaurant I miss in Portales! The shakes are heavenly. They are unlike anything I've ever had. I'm lactose intolerant but they don't make me sick. Soy milk? Who cares? Even if they made me sick they would still be worth it. My favorite was the chocolate and peanut butter. Worth it every time.... + I once tried the grilled chicken salad. When I go somewhere, it almost doesn't matter how amazing the food or how long a business has been here or how many fans. All but a hand few of times I have been to this place, the one taking the order as well as some working in the back have been less than professional. What really takes this to a new level of poor service is a time I was waiting on the south side parked with clear few of the ally way. An individual had been out there for an extended period of time talking to a non-employee smoking a cigarette. This individual finished his smoke break, wiped his hands on his pants/apron and walked straight back to work. I say straight back, because I would assume he should have washed his hands, and there was absolutely NO time for this person to have properly cleaned his hands between the time of going into the business and returning to cooking. It's not hard to estimate the walking speed parallel to the true time most food businesses require a solid hand washing. above is pretty much the Cons: list. I went here because someone told me the milkshakes are to die for. They were right. I had a peanut butter and chocolate one and it was amazing! I went back the next day and got a burger with guacamole and fried zucchini sticks, and that burger was the best fast food burger I've ever had, and the zucchini sticks were excellent too! The food and ice cream is decent BUT I won't do business with Pat's Twin Cronnie anymore because they take their phone off the hook about an hour before closing time... either that or sometimes they just route their calls to voicemail. So after driving all the way there just to order and wait, I asked if they knew the phone was going to voicemail - the reply was "yes, we were busy" - yet not a customer was in sight. They just want to close early and get out of there. Wonder if management knows they do that? In my opinion, a person should not work nights, or work a shift that is close to closing time, if they are in a hot hurry to get off work early!! Makes for bad customer relations. My boyfriend came in town to visit me in Portales and we were craving shakes after dinner. We noticed the high-traffic parking lot right next to Pat's Twin Cronnie and decided to drive up to try out the "Best Malts and Shakes" (as notably mentioned on the establishment). Definitely don't let the look of the building/shack scare you off. There's another Pat's Twin Cronnie drive-thru in Clovis and it's much bigger... almost resembles an old-school Sonic drive-in. So, with that said, the little shack-like building in Portales is just the "baby" of the bigger one in Clovis. :) You drive-up, park, and walk to the front of the establishment where you'll see the menu is posted right up on the wall for everyone to see. When you approach the window, you place your order. Simple. It was about 8pm on a Saturday night and we had already eaten dinner so we just ordered shakes but burgers seemed to be a popular choice for the locals. My boyfriend ordered a large strawberry malt and I ordered a small chocolate malt. Besides waiting in line to make our selection and then waiting for almost 15-20 more minutes for our malt, everything else was fine and dandy. The malts are thick.. you'll be "fish-facing" it by trying to suck the malt up through your straw, so be glad they give you a spoon! You'll definitely use it. :) The malts are fantastic if you like thick, "ice-cream-like" textured malts, but I definitely don't think that making a malt should take 15-20 minutes. I'll just blame it on the football game that was held that evening for the long wait. Besides that little factor, I'd definitely come back to get another malt when it's not so busy. I was a little hesitant to try this place when my dad recommended it, since it looked like a fast food place and I always get sick when I eat fast food. So I ordered the green chili cheese burger, and a chocolate milkshake, still unsure but ready to try. You could tell from the wait that it wasn't fast food both literally and metaphorically. So when we got the food I tried it, and much to my surprise I really enjoyed it! Normally I can tell right away if I'm going to be sick from whatever I'm eating because I have a very sensitive stomach. But this did absolutely nothing to it, so I can tell they use real quality ingredients! So if you go by I definitely recommend the green chili burger and shake. With everyone on here raving about the milkshakes I just had to go and have one. Maybe I ordered the wrong flavor, but mine was so awful I actually threw it away. I had the caramel malted shake and it was cloyingly sweet with artificial chemical flavoring. Even the texture was not to my liking......so thick they serve it with a spoon (sorry, but I want to drink my shake with a straw) and grainy, not silky smooth. On the positive side, the regular hamburg was a good size and came with lettuce and pickles and mustard and a side of Frito Chips. Service was friendly and fast. Ok.. Do not let the decor of the building scare you off. It is very simple yes, but the food that comes out of here is GREAT!! My family and I eat here eveytime we come back to Portales and the food never, never disappoints. Now they are not the fastest burger joint, but in Portales they are the best. I highly recommend the homestyle burger that is off-menu. They hand-form the patties, & 9 out of 10 times, they are super thick! I almost always get a cheesestick which I think everyone should try at least once; the batter is slightly sweet which plays off the light salt of the cheese.
