Everything is organized here so make sure you know how much you want and what you want when you come. The quality of wood is good and I've been grabbing bags for a while as burn days had been limited. After reorganizing the backyard, I realized I needed to add some wood to stack and dry while at the same time burn occasionally due to the cooler weather. After getting 14cubic Feet of Juniper I also picked up some bulk chunks to fill up the Uhaul that are used for bonfires. I've gone through a lot of wood and may have to do another run and just let it dry out over the summer. The quality of the burns has been great. read more

With the amount of chopped wood here I can definitely imagine Paul Bunyan running this shop with his trusty blue ox Babe. Nestled just past the Tempe border into Guadalupe, the lot is essentially a giant storage facility for all the great varieties they offer. Whether you want wood for your fireplace, campsite, or some nice chunks for smoking meats, you'll find some high quality goods to take home. When you enter the lot, off to the sides you'll see two gigantic piles. On one side is a pile of various shaped branches and thinner pieces of wood called "camp wood" and on the other side is a neatly stacked pile of more uniform logs. Prices for large orders and bags and bags of wood chunks for smoking are posted and lined right outside the shop. I loved how there were so many varieties of wood available. Some examples include pistachio, almond, mesquite, cherry, apple, oak, and pecan. After talking a bit with the gentleman manning the store he mentioned that the most popular wood used here in restaurants was the pecan but the cherry was one of their best woods for smoking (The owner personally uses cherry for BBQ). I was very intrigued by the more rare woods (Almond and pistachio) and he recommended the pistachio mixed in with a second wood. The bag of pistachio was $30 and it is listed as 1.2 cubic feet but it seemed a lot bigger to me. To be honest every time I look at the bag it looks even bigger than I imagine it to be lol. The chunks themselves were a very generous size. We looked for some lump charcoal too but they only sell mesquite lump (I prefer oak). Service was very helpful and friendly and the gentleman I spoke with was very knowledgeable about their different smoking woods. I'm excited to fire up the BBQ to get smoking meat again! If only the weather will cool down so I don't melt while I'm outside. I'll be back for sure because I want to get some more chunks once I use up some of my existing supply. FYI, I have used PB firewood various times, In recent years our trees were contaminated with Sooty Mold and Sooty Canker Fungus . I was informed of the situation by professional Arborologist, ASU & U of A University Master Gardeners. They all pointed out that it was likely brought in from an outside source, likey dead trees and/or lumber. This is were PB's wood comes in. I'm just trying to help others avoid the tremendous loss of trees, not alone the loss but the extensive cost e.g. thousands of dollars for replacement trees and professional treatment of the infected trees/grounds. Please inspect your wood before it contaminates your home! You can search the web for further information and details. If PB is reading, maybe you could treat your wood for infectious diseases prior to sales, it's a simple process of spaying your wood with a solution of one part of household bleach and nine parts of water...cheap and easy. read more

I got a cord of Alligator Juniper here and the transaction was super easy, pleasant owners, and the yard workers loaded my trailer very carefully. The wood is superb, best I've had in years here. We've been buying firewood from Paul Bunyan's for about 5 years now & we've been happy with their product, their business & their service up until now. I sent them two emails stating that we wanted to buy more firewood and we hoped to have it delivered the following day. They still have not responded to any of my emails. In spite of receiving no response to my emails, I called Paul Bunyan's Firewood, again hoping to have firewood delivered the following day and a woman (owner?) who should not be dealing with customers answered the phone. I told her that in the past my husband had dealt with a guy who I thought was the owner. Well, she said she couldn't find any record of us ever having ordered firewood before and she sounded exasperated, like I was a real pain in the ass. (I later looked it up and we spent over $1,300. & that's ONLY for 2012!) So the woman put me on hold and suddenly a man (owner?) picked up the phone, gave me prices and added that there was a $35. delivery fee, plus another fee? When I told him that we had never paid a delivery fee before, he didn't even acknowledge what I said. (we live in Central Phx- to go from zero to $35 for delivery after 5+ years is ridiculous) Anyway, I could tell he was in a big rush too. I'm sure they're all very busy and I know how the cold weather makes me exceptionally cranky- so I'm not taking it personally. I'm looking for another place to buy firewood. read more

I love this firewood supplier. I rarely review non restaurants but had to make an exception with Paul Bunyan I drove here looking for wood for my smoker and ended up buying a 1/8 of a cord of split pecan wood. I really wanted oak but the owner told me that their oak wasn't seasoned enough and it would probably take a few more months. I left to go to another near by yard and the workers were so nice they told me that they would stay open a little later than usual to give me time to look at the other yard. Once I left the yard I called Paul Bunyan and they remained open for ,e so I could get my wood. I also bought a bag chunk of apple and cherry wood. It's starting to get cold so I placed my order online for a 1/2 cord of Alligator Juniper to be delivered to my house. The wood is two years old already and ready to burn, no aging necessary. The delivery drivers were on time and cleaned up after themselves. They stacked the wood neatly on my wood rack. This is the best wood for your wood burning fireplace and/or fire pit. I had purchased wood here before like to support smaller business vs market leader (Berry Brothers). Called and asked if had oak for wood burning pizza oven was told "yes" drove 30 miles to find out I was lied to, had pecan which I was not interested in had tried before. Deplorable. Owner verbally combative and antagonistic, over this that follows: Purchased a 1/2 cord of wood and they only had 1/4 available. They rectified the lapse by writing on a business card that they owed another 1/4. When I returned to collect the remaining 1/4, the owner Gary refused to deliver. The owner, when trying to reason with him, became belligerent, even as I was prepared to purchase additional wood. Clearly not that intelligent. $170 rip off. Next stop is the legal process to recover the amount and more. read more

I was very happy with the price however, when I got my 14 cubic feet of wood home it was not all pinion which is my main reason for giving them my business. I also took home two bags of juniper. I called and left a message asking what I could do about it and I received no response or phone call back. I will definitely go to a different firewood dealer in the future. read more

I bought wood from PB in Fall 2014 (pecan and juniper) and it was fantastic. Delivery was timely, wood was stacked quickly and neatly, and I liked the quality of the wood. I ordered just juniper in Winter 2015, and had the same results, only I found the juniper alone wasn't burning hot enough for my taste (my mistake). So I went and picked up some pecan midway through the burn season. The pecan hissed and steamed when burnt, which I read creates creosote buildup in the chimney. I don't think it was fully seasoned. This year I plan to purchase wood in the fall. read more
