How have I been sleeping on Paul's Fruit Market? I popped in here to try and find some locally made sweets to give away as gifts. I found those, as well as a bounty of excellent looking produce and one of the largest collections of local goods and groceries I've seen. A clerk pointed me to their local chocolates and candies section, and I was able to get some bourbon balls and modjeskas -- dark chocolate modjeskas, in fact, a first for me. And during my short trip, I noticed several local brands represented, as well as great options for pre-made meals. I feel like Paul's would also be fun to shop at for a party. You could find lots of dips and other party foods to show off. A few years ago I also ordered some fruit baskets here for my kid's teachers. They were a hit, and it was nice to know that our class' money was going to a local business. I will definitely be back here! read more

I really try to only post positive reviews. But frankly, I'm getting sick and tired of going to Paul's and having terrible customer service. Paul's is on my summertime route while out running errands and shopping for the week. I love the hometown feel of it and can usually find everything I'm looking for when I can't make it to the farmers' market. Besides the fresh produce you'd expect to find, my favorites are their prepared foods and confections. I'm addicted to their original pimento cheese that has just a little kick with the addition of jalapeños. Spread some on a toasted bagel or roll with a thick slice of fresh tomato and you're in heaven. Their fruit dip and deviled eggs are also delicious for picnics, gatherings, or packed lunches! Freshly baked pies (available in slices, halves, and wholes), cake, and candies are always tempting. But the items I can't seem to leave without a are the cubes of fudge (peanut butter/chocolate, yum) and modjeskas which I think come from Muth's. A little something sweet to end a lunch on the go or quick dinner at home. read more

I came in here for the first time and was blown away by the variety of items to choose from. I like that they have specialty items that are hard to find anywhere else - though this obviously means some prices are a little higher than you'd typically pay (but that's to be expected). I discovered one of my new favorite things while shopping at Paul's Fruit Market - banana pepper mustard. I am running low currently, so I am going to utilize their curbside pickup option and get some more soon! Wow! We wandered into Paul's Chenoweth Square location after brunch recently and were amazed at just how many items were packed into the space. It looked like a spot with a large local clientele. Outside was a huge selection of ornamental and vegetable plants. There is ample parking available. I was impressed with the quantity of ready to eat and ready to cook items. The meat selection was impressive along with a good seafood selection. Very interesting spot. read more

I start to fill my basket and make my way to the deli. First pass, no assistance. As I start to leave, I hear the deli crew happily ask a white man if they could help him. After, he leaves the counter, I walk back up and stood. The crew looked at each other. One, in a low & quick tone, said something with the word help as he walked passed me to the other side. Then the other, looking as if he was struggling to determine if he should offer assistance asked, in a time that sounded as though he was bothered, "did you need help with something". There's no denying that this place is fun to shop! If you spend enough time here, you're going to just keep finding cool stuff. I really like how many local and niche items that are available. Dressings, popcorn seasonings, bbq sauce etc. Here's how you do Paul's though. There's a technique. You order your sandwich ( the sandwiches are awesome ) THEN you make sure you have at least 10 minutes to shop. The sandwiches seem to take an eternity to make sometimes. Oh well. The new " Godfather " sando is amazing btw. Gotta try one. You like dips and shmears ya say? Well, you're in the right place here! There's a couple of cold cases FULL of options. Beer cheese, chicken salad, and 96423 other things to spread on crackers. Love the pimiento cheese. Oh yeah, there's also plants out front. Lots of annuals and whatnot. Makes it convenient when you need some mums to fill the porch pots and you're hungry at the same time. I can say one truly negative thing about Paul's though. It's definitely not affordable to some folk to just full on go shopping here all of the time. It can add up quick like Whole Foods. I think they could either drop the price a bit on common goods, or add some more affordable options on basics. It would probably make people just grab more and think less. Just a thought! I just started shopping at Paul's a few months ago, and it's become my go-to grocery. They always have really beautiful produce, Blue Dog bread by the door, and I love that samples are out everyday. One thing that Paul's really excels at is their plant selection. I planted my veggie garden late this year and struck out on a lot of what I was looking for at St. Matthews Feed & Seed. I'd stopped at Paul's for groceries and wandered around the back at Paul's and found so many seedlings! Lots of stuff beyond the basics, including crookneck squash, which completely made my day, and several varieties of lavender. The only thing that I think could be improved at Paul's is a substantive offering of local coffee beans. Besides that, this is one of my favorite finds for the year. read more

Another close lunchtime option for me. Had previously tried one of their bean burritos, and found it to be quite tasty, so headed over yesterday to grab one for lunch. Was surprised to see one 50% off!! They are "right-sized" --i.e. what you should eat as a burrito, and include a small container of fruity dipping sauce that is a very nice compliment. I ended up getting a juice drink to go with, but was thrilled for a choice of Ale-8-1 or Roobie Red tea--a lot of local love going on. And, I saw one of my fav snacks--Mr. G's Kettle Corn--as well as cotton candy grapes (hard to find, and yes, they do taste like cotton candy). While prices are a bit higher than your average supermarket, I really enjoy the emphasis on locally sourced items. When leaving, I snapped a pic of some perfect looking pumpkins--one should be ending up on our porch soon for the season. read more

I have been coming to this particular location for years, whether it's for a flat of pansies or a few vegetables with some Modjeskas to round out my purchase. Their "to go" section of prepared foods does not disappoint. The pimento cheese and benedictine are both items you should make room for in your basket as you're browsing. There is also a wide variety of dips, spreads, and sauces to enjoy on crackers, or the fresh-baked bread sold in the store. One of the things I always buy at Paul's is Kizito' wonderful cookies. They are almost always sold out or nearly so. I have complained se real times. They say they deliver 2x per eeek and I should stop in on those days (adjust my schedule for them), and they don't have enough storage space to stock more (baloney). Counter clerks are quick to make excuses. What kind of business keeps on running out of product over and over without increasing their order? Exasperating. read more

I like supporting local businesses when I can, and while a bigger store like Kroger might have "everything," Paul's is still welcome as not only a get in and out, but it plays a tad on my nostalgia. It reminds me of going to the old (and no longer in existence) Haymarket downtown with my grandmother and my mother when I was a kid, and I started getting used to how to properly shop for produce and how many variations of produce exists. I didn't get a lot on this recent visit - some herbs, vegetables, and fruits I needed for a couple of weekend recipes - but it always pleases me with how much they have, considering the size of the location. You would think there would be a very limited amount, and then you look around and realize there is not only produce, but a deli, bread, snacks such as chips, and dried spices, in addition to a unit with fresh meat and shelving with Kentucky produced items. I even found an after-Christmas sale table and I lucked out on a deal for high-end tortilla chips! Checkout can occasionally get backed up if they're busy, but they always seem to keep the two registers open, and the personnel work fast and stay friendly on top of it. In addition, there's always plenty of parking despite sharing the lot with Three Dog, Cheddar Box Deli and a few other businesses. If you use public transportation as I do, Paul's is within a block or so of several major lines on Frankfort Avenue/Shelbyville Road, depending on which way you're going (#62, #19, #25, #29, #31 for you TARC users). This is one of several local businesses in the neighborhood which I enjoy frequenting and walk out happy whenever I do, which is more than I can say when I visit the larger supermarket nearer me (another review for another day LOL). Next time I need a few grocery items, I'll be stopping in again...and then hit another of my favorites while I'm out. Side Note: Back in May, I went on a cruise, and I always attend the ship arranged Meet and Greet of those of us who "met" thru our Cruise Critic and Facebook groups. Sometimes we have a "gift exchange" in which one brings an item or items representing your hometown, home state, country, etc. So, I happened to walk into Paul's for one thing - and walked out with a bag of Kentucky candies and snacks I could easily carry on the plane and the ship for the exchange. I even found Modjeskas and bought some extras to put into the goody bags I'd made for the officers in attendance. I'll be on another cruise in November, and should we have a gift exchange, Paul's will be where I go to for the little things which scream "Kentucky"! read more

They will cut open a melon so you can taste it before buying and have an easy return policy. Its a fun place with goodies for everyone and makes for a wonderful opportunity to teach kids about new fruits and veggies and let them try things they may not see in the supermarket (likes starfruit or figs or black watermelons) and allow you to buy fresh food that is ripe and really great quality. No wilted herbs, moldy berries, or rock-hard peaches here. They have great lunch options too. Con--the baked goods, salsas/dips, and fresh stuff are pricey and not organic despite that high price. read more

Paul's is an amazing fruit & vegetable market (and deli), which also sells meat and specialty foods (baked goods, homemade pasta, crackers, candies, spices, etc). Everything is great quality and delicious. Their deli features cold cuts and cheeses, alongside a cold case of cooked foods to carry out (grilled salmon, loaded potatoes, casseroles, meatloaf, potato salad, etc). You can get a custom sandwich while you wait. And in the spring and summer they sell hundreds of varieties of beautiful flowering plants, annuals and perennials. Highly recommend ! read more

I love Paul's...but really, what's not to love. While Paul's probably cannot be your only grocery store given it's limited product line, it's good for so many things. For starters, the deli is great. You can stop in for lunch and get a custom made or deluxe sandwich or wrap with chips and a pickle for around $7. I love the Rueben but often create my own. Paul's also has a wide selection of dips and spreads if you need something for a party or gathering. The spreads range from pimento cheese, beer cheese, guacamole, bean dip, and many others. All of the dips I've had are fantastic. Another specialty section includes the wide range of ready made food - from salads to sides to main dishes, you can skip cooking one night and grab some food to go at Paul's. Paul's also has a great produce section and other specialty foods such as snack mix, nuts, and sweets. I'm also often lured by the specialty crackers and chips which I typically impulse buy and eat on the ride home...maybe not the healthiest idea but they are so good. Finally, I've never had a bad customer service experience here. The staff are helpful, friendly, and genuinely appear to like working at Paul's. I have used Paul's several times for both box lunches and catering. Both were excellent. The box lunches were very fresh, huge, and delicious. I also used them on short notice for a funeral during the holidays, and again both their service and quality were way more than I expected. I love the baked spaghetti. The price is reasonable per pound. It is made for large portions to be purchased refrigerated or in their deli case. I get it from the deli case. Top notch for one to buy as an easy dinner entree. I enjoy the precut produce. Specifically, the pineapple, strawberries, and cantaloupe are excellent and very fresh. Deviled eggs and tuna salad respectively are very good. Pauls is one of favorite places to visit one a week or more. The best fruit in town!! It costs a little more but you KNOW you get quality. And if something does happen when you get it home...Pauls will get it taken care of, no questions, no hassle. Simple, old-fashioned type service. Also, theyll even cut a melon for you on the spot to try and if you want, you buy just half of it. This is why I love Pauls! Lunch...wraps are just 6.99 and you get fresh fruit with it. Yum. Goodies...great salsa, Kizito cookies, guacamole, pies, cakes, and more. These items (except Kizitos) are overpriced, in my opinion, but make for a nice splurge. Also happen to have great OJ (pineapple OJ was even better-please bring it back!). I would like to compliment Paul's Fruit Market- Middletown location. I ordered a whole turkey, turkey gravy and large fruit tray for Christmas dinner this year. The turkey was truly spectacular! Well seasoned, moist, easily prepared and the turkey gravy was also outstanding! Their fruit trays never disappoint, and, this one lived up to my expectations once again! I will be back! I have had other area stores prepared whole turkeys and they simply did not come anywhere near the taste, quality and presentation of Paul's Fruit Market!
