Whilst on the 1st floor off Baggot Street there was no street noises and the reception definitely has an air of calm and professionalism. It offers everything you'd expect of a salon from hand, feet, body treatments to waxing, make up, etc. They are renowned for their pedicures, so yes our Irish summer hasn't give us many reasons to get the saddles out but keeping your feet in good order with a little pamper feel to it, then pop along to Essentials... You won't be disappointed! Their pedicure stations are top notch, amazing comfortable seats which make sure that throughout your treatment, you are relaxed, at ease and amazingly comfortable throughout. There is no rushing once your treatment is over, so you can take your time ensuring your toes are perfectly dry. I've been coming here regularly for back massages and the therapist has been excellent. Elena really helped work out some knots in my back and by coming back, she's built on her work from the previous week which is really great and shows a great level of commitment and attention to their customers... She's been really friendly plus her knowledge, tips and tricks for exercises are all helping.

However, a few friends have raved about Essentials so I decided to give them a try last week. Their salon is very clean and the staff are professional. I was promptly greeted, taken to my chair, and asked to pick out a colour. The therapist quickly got to work and spent the next 45 minutes making sure my feet and toes were public ready. Unfortunately, while my toes looked lovely, it felt more like a clinical treatment rather than a spa treatment. The chair was just a chair, no back massagers to be found. And after my cuticles were cleaned up, I received a 45 second massage per foot, and that was it. For €55 I expected more.

What I arrived to was a cosy professional salon using and selling all the usual lovelies- OPI, dermalogica etc. The equipment was all brand new and modern, including my favourite- the heated treatment bed! Wowee. Even though I had a voucher there was no scrimping on the treatments. I find some places try cut corners on these deals. The girl who looked after me was really friendly, she gave some helpful info about the area as the place is quite tricky to find. There was no awkward sales pitch or snide comments encouraging me to buy something I don't need. I will definitely be going back as I know now the low prices are good value, not low standards!

Went here twice for a shellac manicure. First time I paid and the second time I had been given a…read morevoucher! I was not happy either time. On the first occasion the shellac chipped after 2 days. The last experience was worse My tips chipped about 3 hours after leaving the salon! I called to complain and they did not deal with it very well. They just removed the tips off the few that had chipped and did a shabby job or reapplying new tips that also chipped the next day. They never even apologised for the bad shellac manicure!! I would have expected any good salon to actually redo both your hands! But no not that case! I would never return here.

Now I must declare a personal interest here, as my wife Mary has used Saks for nearly 30 years and she has depended on the skills of Bernie, Sue, Sandra, Marie and everyone else, plus of course Ann , who holds it all together. This government is running the country into the ground. Allowing greedy contractors to throw up shitty, cheap hotels while real establishments like Saks go to the wall. And plus give 750 million euros to that joke of a TV company RTE. A couple of years that fine pub in Smithfield The Cobblestone was threatened with demolition to make way for another chappy hotel. The people took to the streets protesting and Thankfully the pub was saved. Well people will always need their hair done, cut or coloured and there are not that many really good hairdressers like Saks around. Imagine to my surprise that I found a hair salon down here. The salon itself is relatively quiet (I think it's mostly because of location!). He has expanded his business into the ground floor of a Georgian building on South William Street, he has liberated the high ceilings and replaced the sash windows, giving the pale green interior a drawing room atmosphere. David himself is an excellent barber, and a charming, helpful host who is more than prepared to order in some exotic hair care products for you. At €14 for a dry-cut this is a good bet if your in town and fancy sprucing up your hair-do.

However, be warned, if you're unfortunate enough to have your hair cut by Gabrielle, it can be a disaster! No matter how much you tell her what you want, you do not end up with the desired haircut, ie you ask her that you don't want the hair cut too tight, and yet she will not listen, and you'll end up with the most horrendous haircut. This has happen to a few people (to whom I had recommended about the Morgan 4 Men) I know on many occasions, who had their hair cut by Gabrielle. Unfortunately because of this, the Morgan 4 Men have lost several customers, which is a pity as the owner gives you the style you want. Given that the Morgan 4 Men does not take appointments, you'll have to be lucky enough to have the owner who will listen to you and get a satisfactory haircut, as oppose to Gabrielle who'll do a botch job on your head.
