It has been owned by Debenhams since 1976, yet the store is fairly old being founded in 1780, while it doesn't seem to compare to the older department stores in London, it still is a fairly nice branch, you can enter the store through street-level or through the Grosvenor Shopping Centre. The store is pretty old and you can tell that through shopping inside, they have random sets of steps and ramps all over, so it isn't just one straight/flat level, so do be careful where you're walking to avoid tripping. They had a huge clearance sale on my visit, due to Debenhams' facing difficulties and having to close many of their stores, including this one, I still found many of their prices to be high even after the discount, I found the promotional offers to be inconsistent and it was hard to tell what item costs what as each part of the store/product range would have a different % off. The store did seem a little messy, but it did have some good products overall and it is nice to see they haven't ignored the history, it's a shame to see this store earmarked for closure as although it isn't perfect, it is and remains a nice addition to the town centre. 3*

This place really is fantastic for womens clothes - like debenhams it has all the usual brands such as Jane Norman and Oasis, and it has a great underwear section with huge variety of pretty knickers. Of course these come with a higher price tag that the high street stuff that can be found there but this is where I would come to look for something to wear for a special occasion.

On my last visit I saw a pretty tasty, well cut dark pin stripe suit for £30! If you are a bloke who's usually seen in jeans and t-shirt and need a budget suit for that one off occasion you can't go wrong! For the more adventurous there are an entertaining amount of almost psychedelic patterned and coloured casual jackets - great for your inner dandy'! Its also very handy for outdoor clothing, fleeces, waterproofs etc. Womenswear is not quite as exciting but my partner managed to pick up a very nice evening dress last year for £20 possibly a Klass There is also a small furniture department with some nice pieces, though the prices are not as good as the clothing. Upstairs boasts an adequate range of house and kitchen wear prices range from budget to reasonable. There is also a nicely sized cafe that serves hot meals and drinks. However like a lot of backwoods places in small towns they stop serving meals at 2pm hot sandwhiches and chips are avalible up until 4pm though. There is the obligatory perfume counter and a small area selling gloves, scarves and umbrellas. The menswear section is dominated by formal shirts, suits, jumpers and high quality rugby shirts. There is also a small, but ever reducing homeware section to the rear of the store. Upstairs is the womenswear department, again quality clothes, but on the expensive side. On the whole, Beatties is a great place to go for that gift for someone special.

I recently brought 6 chairs and an oak dining table from the shop. The quality of the produce is very good. They also have excellent delivery staff. for example, when they delivered the order they put dust sheets in to install it properly and even put soft pads on the legs of all the chairs so that they would sit nicely on our laminate flooring. You don't get service like that anymore. Then even better, one chair developed a small creak and they exchanged it without a quibble. I would shop here again, no problems, no hassle.

Highly recommend the branch at Tamworth where, if they haven't got it in stock, they will do everything they can to get it for you as soon as possible. Their advice is so helpful too. John Lewis deserve their reputation, and the staff at this branch, as elsewhere, actually do care about making sure the customer is satisfied.

Let me explain why…read more I used to visit when I was home on leave from the Forces but on one occasion I was prevented from entering by a very pompous and unpleasant Doorman. I'd smiled at him and said 'Good morning', as I always did - perhaps this one was new, as I didn't recognize him. He simply looked down his nose at me as though I'd made a bad smell and stepped in front of me as I was about to enter. I asked him what was wrong and, rather than replying, he just gave me the most disdainful stare. I had no idea what the problem was. I wasn't in my Sunday Best but I was certainly presentable - clean clothes, clean shaven, smart hair cut as you'd expect from a military type. He looked old enough to have done National Service himself. I politely asked him again what the problem was and again he said nothing, just continuing to look at me with utter contempt. When I wrote to Store Management, I received no reply. I was utterly disgusted and can only put it down to snobbery.
