I was sceptical about this joint as my inner city cowboy mate recommended it, and that's enough for me to avoid almost any place. True to form, Pearl Oyster is pretty inner nouveau pirate chic, but the food here is good enough for you to forget you're the only bloke in the room not wearing lens less glasses and reading the journal entries of James Cook from his time on the Endeavour.
Article 1) Sambal Omelette.
Forget what Kate D said about the salmon and eggs dish, every scenester in the joint orders that (and if you knew anything about salmon farming, you'd be giving it a wide berth also). The sambal omelette is the way to go. All soft and fluffy eggs with crunchy fried onions and coriander stalks, the thing is a fine balance of textures and flavours. Plus it's actually spicy, so you can feel like a pirate. Arrrgh. None of that lily livered eggs and salmon nonsense.
Article 2) Coffee.
Can be hit and miss, which is a shame. Because of this, Pearl Oyster cannot be my local. Plus, the last couple of times I've been there, I've gotten the dud waiter and had to wait an age for even a skerrick of service. I actually up and left on two occasions for this very reason.
Apart form that, this place could, and should, be so good it's a shame. read more
