We wandered into this most charming bookshop on a whim but am so glad we did. First of all, just aesthetically, it is a really cool looking book shop. Something about the way the proprietor has arranged the books on the lower shelves vertically and the upper shelves horizontally just looks so cool when you're talking about floor-to-ceiling shelves of books. I really just thought it was so artistic and cool. Second - selection. Very vast and broad. Very well organized (oh I do love a store that is organized). Books were in very good condition and easy to browse. I could have seriously spent some good time in this shop. I also enjoyed the selection of local photography and notecards from local photographers. Love to see those sorts of things in shops. Staff was not pushy but was helpful. Everyone I was with left with an armful of books, which says something about the high quality of my friends and also about the quality of this lovely shop.

You can't go wrong, you'll definitely leave with at least one gem, probably an armful.

Over piced and dirty, any other used book store I've been to is half the cover price but not here.

"Fat Stacks" In…read moreWinona there was a bookstore With Al Franken fans filling the floor 300 souls packed Between the book stacks Then they exited out the back door "Yeah, I'm checking you out," I muttered in my head as I stood pressed against a swarm of steamy bodies, some half-wrapped around book stacks. All were waiting breathlessly...the excitement was palpable. I'm sure at least one of them was licking their lips. No, that's not a scene out of a horribly-written romance novel, but it is what came to mind after staring at "The Dastardly Duke" and "I Adored a Lord" for 45 minutes as random body parts bumped up against me at Paperback and Pieces. At least the books proved better visuals than looking at a sea of heads while listening from the center of the fan crowd to the muffled musings of our Minnesota Senator, there promoting his book, "Al Franken, Giant of the Senate". He's good enough. He's smart enough. And gosh darn it, people like him! All this standing still gave me plenty of time to contemplate the décor and layout of Winona's oldest bookstore. Partly because I was trying to take "aerial" photos of the crowd by standing on my tiptoes in order to try to find an open spot to move to in the store, I noticed the tops of the shelves that lined the walls...specifically, how bare they were. This would have been a perfect area to spruce up the store's shelf esteem with either book-related or holiday vignettes. I also noticed that the shelf that housed the lord-loving-lady book was flanked by flocks of other romance-book-filled shelves...perhaps more than what seems normal for a store that doesn't require you to go behind a curtain to check out the merch. The second thing that came to mind while boxed in place was that there was no way this crowd was compliant with building occupancy fire codes, but shhhhhhhush....I'm not telling (and alas, no citations were given). While it may not be novel to hold an author event in a bookstore, I give props to this independent shop for tackling this circus--it was a rare treat to be entitled to meet the man of Stuart Smalley fame. However, I would recommend to the event coordinators involved to book a larger venue when the author is a celebrity comedian/politician. I'm also not entirely sure why there weren't bookstore employees walking through the lines outside with mobile check out devices in hand--it would have greatly helped the wait and lack of crowd control inside. But what the store lacks in crowd control tactics and style, they more than make up for in substance. Bring in your used books and score some trade credit deals as well! Here's an abbreviated list of contents of fun treasures you will find inside: Book lights Candles Coloring books to familiarize yourself with the impending zombpocalypse Cool 3-D Animal Bookmarks Greeting cards And more! Come in and wish the owner luck on her next chapter in life as she has put this bookstore up for sale. But that's another story. ~The Nosy Norwegian, Sniffing out good deals and dust from brittle book pages so that you don't have to!
