The librarians were super nice and made sure I was comfortable and had access to an outlet, this is a gorgeous old-school library with antique wood panelling and study desks upstairs which look out over the library. I hope the citizens of Bar Harbor can keep this place going because you just don't see these kinds of old heritage libraries around anymore and from what I understand, this place runs on donations. They also badly need to update their electronic collections and access to databases and such. Other than that, it was a wonderful place to spend an hour away from the maddening crowds and get some work done.

The library is closed a few days ahead of time to prepare for this vast emporeutic event every August. Cartons piled three deep were neatly placed under tables of books that covered the entire lawn. To the left of the entrance were the nonfiction materials, and the right held all aspects of fiction. I headed right. I was quite pleased with my restraint as I only purchased one book - an out-of-print Velda Johnson novel that takes place in - you guessed it - Maine. The library itself is also gorgeous. The Federal style structure is composed of lovely red brick, and the inside boasts wooden bookcases, high ceilings and architectural embellishments. The staff here are friendly and informative. They also have a room with local artists' work on display. Definitely worth a visit for any fellow booklover.

This is as good as it gets for a local library, comfy couches and chairs in front of the fireplace (!), great little nooks for the fiction collection and a great children's section. The staff is always friendly and helpful. It makes me want to grab a book and take a seat.

I'm writing a review now because one person gave a 1-star review with anger over the library's mask policy in 2021 (please note that they followed the Maine CDC's guidelines for masking all throughout Covid, which I greatly appreciated; notably there is no mask policy now). This skewed the average star rating greatly in a negative direction, so I wanted to do something to skew it back up where it belongs. Ellsworth's librarians sincerely care about their patrons, and it shows.

A library with a…read moremall I've been to a lot of libraries but I've never seen one located in a mall before. Actually it's located in Market Square but it looks like a mall to me. I was surprised to see a huge library right in the middle of all the stores. The library is modern and has some great wifi and lots of computers inside. Things are organized a bit different than I am use to but this is Canada, they do things their own way. This library has probably the coolest entrance of any library I have ever been in. You actually walk in between two huge, fake books. And once inside there are lots of unusual art and displays scattered about. Subtle but definitely cool stuff. As my Yelp friend Robert from Portland, OR, likes to point out, weird can be really tiresome and stupid when it is forced and contrived. But when weird just happens without trying it can be so cool. This library is weird, from the huge books that you walk through at the entrance, to the girl floating by on balloons in the mall at the front of the library. Everything about this library is a bit different. This library is just so weird but in a very, very cool way.

There is no fee to take a class. ITS AWESOME! Its right on the waterfront in the uptown - so easy to get to by either transit or driving. I have easily spent 3 hours just browsing. And more often then not they have a silent auction selling local artists work! Wheather you need to jump on a computer and print your resume or your looking to relax in a comphy chair with the new book you found, this is by far the best library. I would even say - best in canada.

Our cruise stopped in Eastport, Maine, on Friday, June 19, the day before we disembarked from our…read more11-night cruise aboard the Volendam. This time, the ship was able to dock directly at the pier, and the weather was beautiful--sunny, pleasant, and in the 70s. Last year, when we visited Eastport aboard the Zuiderdam, we had to tender ashore instead. Once ashore, everything was within easy walking distance of the pier. The town is charming, scenic, and incredibly welcoming. One of the highlights of my visit was spending some time at the waterfront, where local residents were displaying live lobsters, starfish, sea urchins, and other marine life native to the area in a large seawater tank. Several people staffed the exhibit and interacted with visitors throughout the day. They allowed guests to hold live lobsters, explained how to tell the difference between male and female lobsters, discussed how water temperature can influence the color of a lobster's shell, explained how lobsters feed, and allowed people to pick up live starfish and take photos with them. I walked by several times and enjoyed watching visitors engage with the locals and learn about the region's marine environment. During one of my stops, I spoke with a gentleman who was kind, knowledgeable, and happy to share information about the region's marine life. During our conversation, I learned that his brother owns Look Lobster at Quoddy Bay, a local lobster restaurant in Eastport. If I return to the area, I would definitely make a point of visiting and trying some of their lobster dishes. I spent the afternoon wandering through this beautiful waterfront town, browsing local art galleries, museums, and shops, and picking up a few souvenirs. One of my favorite purchases was a hand-painted shell night light featuring a lobster design, created by a local artisan. At one of my stops, I learned about the Quoddy Tidal Power Project, which was championed by Franklin D. Roosevelt, as well as his summer cottage on Campobello Island in New Brunswick. The island is easily accessible through the Eastport and Lubec area of Maine. It was another fascinating glimpse into the rich history of the region. I am so glad I decided to step off the ship. I got in over 10,000 steps, enjoyed the sunshine, picked up a few unique souvenirs, and came away with a wonderful impression of this beautiful coastal Maine town.
