It's patio season in Iowa City!

The Iowa City Ped Mall in the summer. Is there anything better? On Fridays, there's the Friday Night Concert series, which starts around 5 PM in front of the Sheraton. Then, there are a variety of events planned by Summer of the Arts (Arts Fest, Jazz Fest, ect.) and the Iowa City Downtown District. On any average day, the Ped Mall is a great place to enjoy a coffee, lunch, or other beverage outdoors while people watching. There's also a park for the kiddos, and plenty of restaurants with outdoor seating depending on what you're feeling up to. Shops, too!

Where is a good place to salsa dance with my friends?

During the summer, they have free salsa dancing in the Ped. Mall every weekend.

Once you get over the parking and charging for printing, this is a far superior option with little offices and cozy reading nooks that you just don't get in Coralville. Really love this layout

As a kiddo-- story time, summer reading programs, movie nights, computer games to play and a plethora of toys scattered throughout the secluded children's section! Not to mention books, movies, video games, puzzles and more to bring home. As a college kid-- a quiet, air conditioned spot that has newer movies as well as video games to checkout for free. (Take that Redbox. And you, Netflix for not having the movie or season I reallllly wanted to watch!) They also loan equipment like bluray players, laptops and hotspots. Plus, study rooms on the second level are available. As an adult-- THEY LOAN ART, ya'all! A Digital Media Lab also lives here with Adobe Creative Cloud Suite Software. And their digital library is impressive with Kanopy, Local Music Project, RBdigital and more! Parking CAN be an issue-- I'd recommend the Dubuque Street Ramp, which is a block away. First hour free. The staff at the ICPL is wonderful. So helpful and knowledgable, with a smile worn MOST of the time. Also, don't forget a reusable bag for all your checked out goodies!

Yes, Jackson Pollock's 'Mural,' a work from 1943, checks that box in a big way. It's been included in Pollock retrospectives in other art museums. Okay, but do they have anything else? Yes. Whoever is on the team that put together this collection deserves kudos because it's especially strong in mid-20th century and African art. Do they have any Grant Wood paintings? Grant Wood is Iowa so, yes, of course, they have a few of his works, too. What about the building itself? Well, it's shiny and new and a true pleasure to walk through. Sound expensive. What's the admission fee? It's free! Bonus: the scholarship here is great and it's directly reflected in the well-written wall labels. This is hands down one of best two art museums in the State.

Temple Body Arts is a clean, cool looking studio. It does not try to be pretentiously hip nor over the top swanky. I worked with Nic, the owner on my latest piece. Nic was great with communication. Setting up the appointment was easy. Putting down the deposit was also very simple. He told me he would have something drawn up for me when I got there and to my surprise, he did. This was literally the first time I have ever had a tattoo artist have something drawn up before I got there. Typically they tell you they will, then they forget or get busy doing other things and have to draw something up on the spot. He worked with me on the sizing of the tattoo and the placement. In hindsight, this was also the least painful tattoo I have ever gotten. Of course, depending on where you get a tattoo will determine a lot of the pain, however, I felt he had a soft touch. Of course, none of that means anything unless the tattoo turned out the way I wanted it. I can honestly say that I am thrilled with how it turned out. So much so that I will definitely be returning for future pieces. Highly recommend the shop!

When you are in a preselected hotel you never know what you are going to get. Sometimes universities really want to wow you and will put you in extravagant hotels. Other times departments are on a budget crunch and put you in the cheapest option. This hotel hit the exact sweet spot for me. It was right by campus as well as the downtown. That meant it was easy for me to meet with colleagues but also walk around town and go to dinner. The rooms were spacious, the hotel was clean, and there was amble parking. The parking is a bit odd in that it uses a city owned parking garage and you have to get vouchers from the front desk. I didn't drive at all while in town, so this didn't impact me but it is something to be aware of. The amenities at the hotel were good. There was a typical hotel gym and pool that I checked out. There is also a rooftop bar/restaurant. I went up one night for a drink and enjoyed it. There is a large open space and then an outdoor patio. It was a mixture of college kids and people visiting the city. It is one of the taller buildings in Iowa City so the view was great. Now the most important question . . . how was the breakfast? There was pretty standard hotel fare, and most importantly a waffle maker. It made my morning.

That part was a little tricky, and apparently, guests pay for parking... or at least I had to. Other than that, the room was great! Beds are very comfortable and clean. Downtown Iowa City is really cool, too. I will definitely stay here again.
