Any cardiologist working there is selected from the best around the world for technical brilliance and humanistic character. Returned last week for a exam and stress test. I saw three doctors, and two were present DURING the walk on the treadmill. As it was nuclear, I had two sessions with the latest camera, which I basically sat in as it circled around me. No muss. No fuss. Kudos to Drs. Savage, Hansen and Yair, and the technicians. I felt totally secure with these folks. Their competence and caring were omnipresent. Unlike other such procedures I have endured where it often seems they don't know what they're doing, at JHI, that is never a worry. My personal cardiologist called the next day with the results, and reassured me that all we needed to address was a BP issue with a medicinal tweak. Nice to know I will live forever.

That dread was quickly displaced by my experience with the Jefferson Heart Institute, which was remarkably pleasant and efficient. I barely had to wait for my appointment, and I was fortunate enough to get Dr. Wiener, an affable, direct doctor who spoke with clarity and was able to arrange for an echo almost immediately--I arrived at 10, and after an EKG, my meeting with the doctor, the echo, and then one further consultation, I was out by noon. I would unhesitatingly recommend this establishment, and it fills me with anger and sorrow that not everyone has access to the health-care resources that would allow them these sorts of visits. On the upshot, my heart is in good health, so that's nice to know.

But Dr. Balasta was recommended by my previous dr so I already had a good feeling about her. She is smart, humble and open to my ideas about my care. She truly listens and responds with kindness and empathy. She's really great and though I'm sad about missing my previous Dr I am happy to have found my Dr for the next 25 years.

They never answer the phones and when they do they're extremely rude. One once cut me off in mid sentence after I was explaining what Rebecca told me to tell them in case they couldn't squeeze me in without apology. Other times they speak to you like you're an idiot or they can't be bothered. What a shame. I've heard great things about Dr Watkins too, but I don't think I'll be back.

One of the downsides to this particular practice, however, is that one of the great things about it is also a checkmark: the fact that the practice is so small, as a patient you'll get extraordinary attention. One the other hand, it is, at times, difficult to be seen within a day or two, though I have not had trouble with pressing emergencies (like a high fever; I was always seen same day!)

His office is in the lower level of a house, and is old and faded, but immaculate and comfortable. His way of spending all the time needed with a patient to understand the patient and for the patient to understand him is very reassuring. He is not only extremely knowledgeable about medicine, he deeply understands the challenges that patients face in the medical system and he provides all kinds of avenues to counteract that. He is knowledgeable about working both within and outside of insurance systems, which truly sets him apart. When I sent Dr. Ash my medical history, it turned out to be 300 pages, and never in a million years did I think he would read all 300 pages, ask me specific questions, and provide structured feedback--which he did. He is extremely timely in communication as well as extremely supportive. When you are used to being treated like a faceless number in the medical system, it is incredible to connect with someone like Dr. Ash and see what medicine can be like. You don't actually have to dread going to the doctor! With Dr. Ash, you can even look forward to it.

I received a bill for $28.00. I immediately called the # and informed them that this was paid in full. I was told that it would be taken care of. Well, I received a collection letter yesterday morning (April 2013). I called the office and was told that I would have to speak to the billing/office manager and that she would call me the following day. Well I waited till 4:50 pm, no one had called. I contacted the office (sidenote: I am in the process of refinancing my home so my credit rating is important) and spoke with Tina. First I was asked whom I was when I asked for the billing manager. After giving my name, I was then told she was not in. Hmmm, why ask who I was then? I was told rather abruptly that the message was on her desk and she would contact me tomorrow. I told her I needed to speak to someone today. She refused and said the manager was in another office. I asked for that #, again I was met with a refusal and told that she didn't have time to deal with my problem. Then she hung up on me. I called back and asked to speak with her supervisor.....surprise she doesn't have one. I asked to speak with the Doctor and I was told that they won't deal with calls like mine. Beware of dealing with this office. Totally unprofessional, horrible service and major inconsideration when dealing with the public.
