Pelindaba Lavender was a stumble on place. It was raining, had time before the ferry came, so we hoped on it! OMG! The lady who works here is like sunshine, so sweet!!! I ended up leaving with Multi-Purpose Lavender Hydrosol, this thing for your car (you put a few drops of lavender oil on it, plug it into a outlet and it fills your car with the wonderful smell and relaxes you! This is great from stressful days driving). I also bought 2 lavender dog treats (which they both loved), and the lavender chocolate syrup! OMG, Try this, heat it up and put it on ice cream! YUMMY!!!! I just ordered more online, got the 32FL refill on the hydrosol cleaner! This stuff is great and is 100% all natural and certified organic! Safe enough to clean your counters, the mirrors in your home, clean off cutting boards, veggies and even use it on dogs hot spots, it clears them up in a day! GREAT STUFF!!!!! read more

Overall: gorgeous farm and great place to walk around. However, the sales associates could use a refresher on customer service. Skip the gift shop. Enjoy the farm. Pros: Scenery. Beautiful setting w various different types of lavender. Great opportunities for photos. Interesting history with the owner and how he decided on lavender. Cons: Gift shop. We were very excited to shop for lavender products but the sales associates, particularly, the older one, were a bit stuck up and pretentious. It was only when we were beginning to pick out things that they became slightly more (stress, 'slightly') friendly. Another one of my happy places on San Juan Island. Especially in June/July when the lavender is in full bloom - highly recommended! I believe they still have an annual lavender festival in either June or July. When I visited a couple of years ago, you could hop on the local bus and it would take you there, so no need to have a car. They have also built an inn/B&B and spa/massage thing - but check their website to be sure. If bumblebees bother you, give this a pass because the fields are full of fat happy bumblebees busy pollinating the lavender. read more

This place made me deliriously happy. For one, It smells great. The lavender products I bought smell better than any lavender I've ever sniffed. Second, the staff at the cute little shop are incredibly helpful and will even rub lavender oil on you if you hurt yourself .. which I did. I was just walking all around this place with a big, goofy smile on my face. The kind generated out of pure joy. The weather was glorious. The air smelled delicious. I was just so darn happy to be outside when bam!, something got me. Something really got me. I cursed out of shock. Some old people and a family looked up in surprise. One minute the world is a beautiful place, the next I'm dropping the F-bomb in front of senior citizens. Yep, I was stung by a yellow jacket in a lavender field. Let that be a lesson to you. Be careful with your arms when you get overly excited about things. Don't let them go all akimbo out of excitement like you're a wacky-waving-incredible-inflating-arm-man. When you finally bring those babies down, a yellow jacket might be making your armpit home. It's a major bummer. Aside from that, and the huge welt I developed, this place is great! read more

The lavender fields were lovely. As were the candles, sachets, and all manner of other things lavendery and for sale. Interesting sculpture, too. The signage was lacking, though, which almost resulted in us driving up to the private buildings. And - please take a moment to consider what segment of the population might find a gift shop which sells all things lavender of any interest; little old ladies, anyone? - the building with the gift shop in it was not disabled-accessible. Yes, there was a ramp in the back which would have been helpful, if the path to it was passable by a little old lady and her walker. The path/driveway is covered in woodchips - it's a gentle incline which might have been navagable by my 89 year old grandma with her walker but for the woodchips, which made the ground underfoot too unsteady. Note this appeared to be a "driveway" - yet the brain trust staffing the gift shop wouldn't permit us to pull up the driveway to let my grandma get out at the top of the drive and go into the shop. Boo. Boo also to her long tale of woe outlining all of her own injuries (apparently, disclosing that one has a disabled grandmother in the car opens the door to diatribes about the brain trust's own ailments) and to her failure to actually tell us what our purchases added up to prior to holding her hand out expectantly for our money. She did that twice, actually. Kudos, however, to the nice older man who stopped on his own way out to ask if he could help transport Grandma up the drive on foot (we thank him kindly, and we can only presume that his offer was at least in part inspired by him overhearing the very frustrating conversation we had with brain trust, in which she refused to permit us to drive up the driveway, and she offered to let us take pictures of this interior of the gift shop so we could "show Grandma what she's missing." This was our first stop in Friday Harbor since we took an early ferry and was waiting for the lunch hour. It is about a 15 minute drive from town (easy to find with GPS). They have a pretty big lavender field area where you can walk around and take pictures. After that, you can stop by their shop to buy all things lavender (food, soaps, etc.). read more

I love lavender everything - lotion, pillow spray, tea, vodka. It smells delicious, tastes sweet, and kills germs. I've known for years about the "lavender farm" on San Juan Island, but I'd never gotten a chance to go there until today. Giving 5 stars, because San Juan is gorgeous, the weather was perfect, I had some delicious lavender lemonade and rooibos tea, and the proprietress was lovely. But most of all because, right before I got there I was miserably carsick and nauseous...but after just a few minutes among the lavender bushes, plus a glass of lavender tea and some essential oil dabbed on my temples...I felt fine again. There was no sales pressure at all...just a charming cottage full of products ranging from lavender infused dark chocolate, to lavender candles, to lavender condiments from mustard to pepper. I chose a linen spray and some lavender honey...which I'm enjoying right now on a piece of bread. read more

We stopped into the Pelindaba shop in Friday Harbor this weekend. It's the 'off season' so there were very few other people around town. The shop keeper could not have been nicer and didn't make us feel like tourists- rather regular people who all share a love for lavender. This is a beautiful shop and you can tell everything is locally made in small batches with perfect recipes. After chatting with the shop keeper for a while we walked away with a beautiful candle, tea and lotions and recommendations for dinner and happy hour. Been in love with lavender since my cousing brought me some pure lavender oil from France 23 years ago! I am certain that was the first time I had ever smelled "real" lavender. Growing up in Montana in the 60's, the only lavender I'd been exposed to was Glade air freshener! Sad, but true. Pelindaba's lavender oil is delightful! Their hand balm is wonnnderful! But they need a different formula for their shampoo. (that is, if you're as serious about your hair as I am!) Their body lotion is just okay. But I love their oil, so I scent my own lotion with it, and occasionally place a tiny drop on top of the lightbulb of my living room lamp! Learned that trick from my mom. read more

Very nice Lavender farm. Cute gift shop. The day my mom and I were there they were having a large group tour. We weren't able to go to the back and check out the rest of the farm. That was kind of too bad, but oh well. The restrooms are just port-o-pottys and they smelt pretty bad, so we skipped those as well. I concur with previous unenthusiastic reviews of the lavender shop in Friday Harbor on the lack of sales prowess. You know, it may not be their fault, as lavender is often used as a calming agent. They could just be O.D.-ing on it. But anyway, the appropriately sleepy dog completed the picture of a lazy afternoon on the farm. Except, once you've visited the shop chock full of everything from bath salts to lavender honey (free samples, with bread chunks), you can go meander among the oddly-spherical lavender plants neatly grown in fields with the occasional metal sculpture and lawn furniture. To me, the farm is almost eerily well-groomed, as if it were secretly a staging ground for Something Else. What? I have no idea. I imagine this place could be riotously fun with a gaggle of old friends to laze about with, or have a picnic. One neat sculpture is a giant pi symbol. read more

Drive a convertible or at least with your windows down on the way to the farm and you will smell it well before you reach it. We highly recommend taking the guided tour led by the owner, Stephen Robins, on one of the days that it is offered. The tour is very informative. We liked lavender before taking the tour but feel we have not only have a much better understanding but appreciation of lavender as well. Stephen covers the history of the farm, how lavender was selected as a crop for the farm, the challenges of growing lavender on San Juan Island, how lavender is harvested, how the buds are removed, how the essential oil is extracted and the various benefits and uses of lavender. We did buy a number of products not only to support a small business producing quality products but also because Pelindaba uses its own essential oil that it extracts from its own farm. So many other lavender products purchase oil on the market and/or utilize fragrance oil. The lavender was in full bloom when we visited at the beginning of August and it was amazing to see the fields of purple and to hear the hum of bees. While the farm only grows a couple of varieties for its products there is a test garden with a number of different varieties on display. read more

After trying lavenders from many other places, I like their organic culinary lavender the best for the stronger color and scent. 6 oz. tin for $9. It's a little drive from downtown Friday harbor. So far we haven't seen lavender in full bloom at their farm. We'd give four stars for the farm location for the products available and the friendliness of the owner who ran the giftshop. Our first visit to the downtown Friday Harbor location was in the spring of 2005, then I always stopped by whenever we were visiting the San Juans (about 1-2 times a year). Our most recent visit was in spring of 2007. For the visits we've had at this location, I would give it a four star rating for the location, cleaniness, ambience, and products available. This location is clean, with lots of natural light from the windows. One half of it was the giftshop with their products on display, and the other was the cafe with tables/chairs and sofas. We liked their various lavender drinks and pastries: lavender lemonade/shortbread/brownies...etc. They also have coffee and tea if you don't want lavender in your food/drink. Our visits had always been on the weekends, which was especially nice because they stayed open when other stores/resturants were closed. Our experience with the service was always pleasant. Never had a sales associate follow us around the giftshop, so we could browse at will. Food service was quick. We had yet to see what it's like when it was crowded. read more

We never made it to the farm but visited the store. The employee was the rudest person I met on the island. She was on her cell phone the entire time we were there. She rang up several customers including myself, all while her phone was attached to her ear. She gave me too much change and I tried to explain it to her several times but she kept waving me off so she could continue her conversation. I finally pocketed the extra $11.73 and bought a couple of ice cream cones down the street. Products are over priced for the quality. Bought a body oil, coffee and a lip balm. The lip balm had a rancid smell/taste and the quality of the coffee they used to package their lavender coffee was similar to Folgers. read more

I for one had no idea there were so many varieties of lavender. It was a little confusing as to where to park and no one was outside to direct on cutting our own. We were there during the off season, so it wasn't the spectacular site you would think of as a lavender farm, we knew this coming so headed to the store. They had quite a variety of lavender items, was hoping for a better selection of samples as it is hard to buy these sort of items as a first time buyer. Made some great choices though for gifts as both people raved about the cooking spices and lavender lemonade. Very unique! read more

I got married there June 24, 2006. The marriage didn't last, but the ceremony was beautiful. The lavender smells amazing, the color of the fields is gorgeous, and there's even (or was) a day spay. Took the free tour (saturday at 2) and this is how you find out what an amazing place this really is. It's a totally sustainable, vertically integrated company that employs 44 people here on the island. The history of the company, how they chose varieties of lavender (because there are many), prepared the soil , harvest the oil, manufacture the products, right here on the island make it a true gem for this community!!! If you only go here thinking your going to see some fields of lavender plants your missing the whole vision and intent of this company. This is purely based on my experience in the gift shop that is located on their farm. I am giving this farm 2 stars because the staff at the store by the ferry was kind and extremely helpful. However, I will not be returning to this farm or their stores in the future. I wrote the administrators an email and never heard back about the horrible experience I had with their staff member in the gift shop. It was my first time there and I traveled far just to visit the farm. There are plenty of other farms in WA to visit and I would recommend staying on the mainland for a better experience. read more

Found this place by accident on our way to Roche Harbor. We didn't stop, but the next day decided to go back. It's beautiful, including a view of a pond/lake across the road. We enjoyed walking around the different lavender plants. The gift shop had everything you could imagine made from lavender. We found a few neat items, but some things seemed overpriced. I can only spend so much on all things lavender. We didn't try any of their food or beverages, but we were greeted by the woman working out back where they are served. She explained the self-guided tour outside and let us be. The woman inside at the register wasn't overly friendly, but nice enough. It's close enough to Friday Harbor that it's worth the drive. read more

The wonderful smell of lavender fills the air about a half mile before you reach the fields. You can walk thru the fields, enjoying the beauty, as well as some local art. There is a shop with lots of lavender products, some of which I found kinda odd, but to each their own. The smell and views of the farm are worth the drive out there alone. read more

Pelindaba is ecstasy if you are easily distracted by all things lavender. The retail store in Friday Harbor is lovely; clean and very relaxing. The use of space and arrangement of their lovely products is done very well. The products are wonderful and are not overpowering. There is also a cafe in the back of the shop where you can sit, relax and enjoy a cup of coffee or lavender infused tea while you wait for the ferry. Everything about this place is wonderful except the girls who work behind the counter in the cafe. They are deplorable. They lack any sort of customer service skill or know how. They could not be any less helpful if they tried. Pelindaba would be so much better if they hired people who seemed like they actually wanted to be there. Everyone would have a much better experience if the girls behind the counter did not act like every customer was nothing more then a bother. read more

The drive to the farm was beautiful, the "house" next door was worth more than one look and the gift shop had something for everyone. I was able to purchase a couple of new varieties of lavender to take home to my herb garden, I purchased some nice gifts and although I did not have any ice cream, others seemed to enjoy it. The lavender is beautiful, and there are exhibits explaining the processes for extracting the oils that go into the products sold in the store. The store has almost every lavender product imaginable. I was disappointed, however, that the store stocked only one variety of lavender essential oil when the exhibit displayed perhaps a dozen. This was a great place to hang out and enjoy a cuppa. The coffee was great and the atmosphere was pleasant, but sad to say that there is no more. Don't get me wrong, I had enough nostrils full of lavender there to last a lifetime ( I don't miss that) but I do miss the coffee. An amazing, sprawling lavender farm that smells so beautiful you won't want to leave. The fields are always open as far as a I could tell, and I wish we'd brought a picnic to enjoy at the farm! The gift shop is full of wonderful lavender products, you'll want to take all of them home. The little cafe stand in back serves nice lavender accented ice teas and has lavender vanilla ice cream which is quite good. You can also see how lavender hydrosol is produced in the back, which is very interesting! I'd most definitely return to Pelindaba next time I'm on the island. read more

It is a shame that such a beautiful experience as Pelandaba Lavender is ruined by one older female employee that is extremely rude. We have been visiting Pelandaba for many years and each time we come away with a real distaste and bad experience when having to deal with the woman. Our advice to friends and family that come to visit us, and Pelandaba, is to stay away from that person. When we voiced our concern to another employee they stated that the woman was "senior" to her and there was nothing anyone could do about her, her attitude, or her rude treatment of customers. The woman is causing the loss of customers for future visits and is leaving a very poor impression with those who have to deal with her. read more

Nice store but horrid service. If you're going to be in the service industry, please put on a smile even if you don't mean it or feel it. Hoity-toity ladies with a big chip on their shoulders and nose up in the air, act as if they are doing you a major service by selling you things.
