I would like to express that my prior experiences at both this location and the Albia branch have…read moregenerally been positive. However, my most recent encounter was not as satisfactory. Despite arriving 15 minutes early for my scheduled appointment, I was not attended to until 30 minutes later (a total of 45 minutes just in the waiting room), as it appeared that the staff on duty that Saturday were more focused on socializing than attending to individuals waiting in the lobby. Allow me to outline the primary concerns I encountered during this recent visit. I want to emphasize my willingness to spare no expense for the well-being of my pet. The incident that particularly unsettled me was the vet tech's disapproval of my choice to administer Frontline to my dog instead of their recommended product. I attempted to convey that the Albia vet, belonging to the same company, had endorsed Frontline due to a previous adverse reaction to their flea and tick medication, Bravecto, which had necessitated emergency care in Ames. The vet tech insisted that Frontline lacked FDA approval, urging me to use their product priced at $267. Intriguingly, the rebate form they provided indicated the availability of Frontline Gold and Frontline Shield in their inventory. Of course they don't want you buying this elsewhere because they are making a killing by selling theirs to you, that haven't even been on the market long enough to have a full list of side effects. Another concern arose during the blood work procedure. While I am accustomed to blood draws from my dog's leg, the vet tech insisted on drawing blood from underneath her neck, a practice I was unfamiliar with and hesitant about due to my dog's size and propensity to squirm. She's 4lbs and fragile. When I expressed my reservations and requested assistance from someone else, I was met with skepticism about my fear of dog bites. My concern, however, stemmed from the potential harm to my dog from the proposed restraint method. Subsequently, I discovered that my dog had suffered a dislocated leg joint as a result of the handling at the veterinary clinic, necessitating a visit to the small animal hospital in Ames for X-rays and corrective measures to put her leg back into place. They weren't open Sunday for me to bring her back to ask how this happened, and I wouldn't have anyways. In a seemingly minor incident, the clinic proceeded to trim my dog's nails without seeking my permission, adding the service to the bill. While this might appear insignificant, it adds to my overall perception of the clinic's practices. Despite the limited options for pet care in the Oskaloosa area, I am compelled to seek alternative options that prioritize my pet's well-being, even if it requires traveling considerable distances. My primary concern remains my dog's health, and regrettably, I find it challenging to trust the level of care provided by this establishment. Megan was the provider. Doesn't sounds like they have a great track record.

Our first visit was a last-minute emergency appointment for our cat Sophie who was having stomach problems. Kaitlyn, a Veterinary Assistant, was very kind and helpful. Dr. Drew White, a Veterinarian, was extremely professional, thorough, kind, and compassionate. He expertly diagnosed Sophie's problem and gave us some medicine that helped her feel better. Our second and third visits were vaccine appointments for all three of our cats. One of our cats hates riding in the car, and she made a mess in her carrier on the way to the vet. We didn't ask or expect anyone to do this, but Chloe, a Veterinary Assistant, offered to clean the carrier for us. My spouse and I were amazed by her proactive helpfulness and kindness. We appreciate you, Chloe! Dr. Drew White and Chloe were exceptionally friendly, helpful, and attentive during both of our vaccine appointments. Dr. Drew White answered all of my questions clearly and thoroughly, which I appreciated very much. He has a great "bedside manner". The high quality care our cats have received (as well as the high quality service we have received) influenced my spouse and I to switch from our old vet to Family Animal Care. Even though it's a longer drive, it's totally worth it for us. In my experience, Family Animal Care's prices are fair and reasonable. We're so grateful for their awesome staff and facility. Thank you, Family Animal Care!

He's a pit mix so his bite would definitely do some damage. When I checked in I said I was there for a nail trimming appointment and that my dog needs to be sedated. The lady at the front desk said "Well, we can try without it." I said "I'd really prefer that he be sedated because he gets aggressive around people he doesn't know." She said something along the lines of "We'll see." So she takes me back to the room and we wait for the vet. The vet comes in and says "Ok, I can take him." I sat there confused because any time he's gotten his nails trimmed before at a different vet, they do it in the room. So I said "He needs to be sedated." He said "We can try doing it without." I was really frustrated at this point and said "He gets really aggressive during nail trimmings and I don't want him to bite anyone. He needs to be sedated." The vet said "I can handle him.", and took him out of the room. The whole time I'm sitting waiting in the room, I can hear my dog in another room screaming. I was very tempted to go back there, grab him, and leave. When the vet came back in the room with my dog, his paws were bloody. They had cut him down to his clique of his nails. I only noticed this because he had gotten out of his harness and I had to put it back on him, which goes to show how much of a fight he was putting up. I feel horrible for my baby that he had to go through that and come back to me with bloody paws. Had the vet listened to me and sedated my dog, I feel like a lot of this could've been avoided. I will not be returning.

She went in for a routine procedure on her ear and one week later she is gone. Her lab work prior to surgery was great and after the surgery it went south, what's that tell you. I went to Eastview for 32 years and used to swear by them. Beth Doggett was the best vet I ever dealt with anywhere with great compassion and love of animals. Since her retirement this place is circling the drain from the front desk to the back. My dog went in as healthy as a horse and came out weak and dying. Took her back in within the week and they admitted her. I went in on wed to see her and took one look at her and knew she was done. I took her to Cedar Rapids and the next day I had to say goodbye., breaks my heart~ negligence and not paying attention . I have no idea why Dr Jan did not say we have a big problem. They were going to just let her die in that cage. This is a very poorly run facility as far as I can see and getting worse by the day. Jan needs to open her eyes to what's going on. I will never forget or forgive her for losing my beloved Ronni. She said she wants to "learn from this"? Didn't know I was paying fees for a vet school And at my dogs life's expense? I pulled my files today and told her to never send me any correspondence. I actually had a call from Jan tonight . Funny how I didn't hear from her until Ronni was gone. Wanted to know if she could send a condolence card. What for~ damage was done. I would not take my hamster to this place. If your pet needs any procedure or surgery of any kind PLEASE think twice. If I would have switched vets when Beth retired Ronni would still be alive - I will never forgive myself. They will NEVER EVER get a damn dime from me again and I used to be a big customer spending a lot of money a year. Oh by the way my other lab had the same procedure done a year ago and she almost died after going into a seizure. I'm so done with this joke of a facility, find a different vet people!
