THE BEST beans and BBQ. Great cocktails, cozy atmosphere. This is a hidden gem in a big city. Definitely worth the trip off the beaten path.

Cool place. Very cool music. Very nice waitress. I ordered the brisket with Mac and cheese. I recommend the Mac and cheese as a side. The brisket was good, but not as good as I hoped it would be. The meaty part was not as tender as I hoped. I needed my knife to cut it up. The fatty parts were tender sand overall it was pretty good. Apparently the kitchen doesn't open till 6, but they were able to serve me at 5 and I was thankful for that. The meal seemed a little on the pricey side at $29.50 (23.50 euro), but maybe that is the going rate. I'm just visiting so I don't really know prices here. I am a big fan of Joe Carroll's pit work, of Brooklyn and Philadelphia fame (Fette Sau). He spent time in America's BBQ hot spots, Texas, Kansas City, Memphis, etc to hone his craft. The food at Pendergast is every bit as good as what you enjoy at Fette Sau. It's fantastic! I was bummed that there was no pork belly on the menu, but the brisket, pulled pork, and ribs made me forget that. :-) Great stuff, folks. read more

KC bbq in Amsterdam!! I have only been once but will be back. They smoke the meats in house and all the sides are homemade as well. We started with some delicious cocktails and the fried burnt ends. The burnt ends were so good. Little chunks of charred brisket served with bbq sauce (nice and vinegary) and ranch (first I have had here). For entrees we went with the three side plate and the brisket. All entrees some with a side, little cornbread muffins, and picked veg (beets when we went). The baked beans were quite good. Lots of brisket in the beans. Not sweet at all but rich and full of flavor. The potato salad was quite good as well. Not overly mayonnaisey but like a proper potato salad. The slaw was okay. I like vinegar flavor but the cabbage should have been sliced thinner in my opinion. The brisket was quite tasty. Cooked perfectly so it flakes away, juicy and full of flavor. Great service. We learned about the place, the menu, and good wine recommendation. The desserts sounded good but we were too full. Next time. read more

Eating at Pendergast was the best decision of our trip to Amsterdam! The food was delicious, the service attentive, the drinks perfect and overall, just a wonderful experience. Having eaten BBQ at some of the 'best' places in the US from Memphis, to Austin, I can say that the BBQ and the sauce at Pendergast beat all of them by a mile! The short ribs and pork loin ribs were the most delicious and moist ribs I've ever had...ever! I'm still thinking about them a day later and wishing I had more room in my stomach to eat more! Pescatarian friends had the salmon and said it was one of the best preparations of salmon they've ever had. And that's saying a lot since we live in Seattle! The lemon tart was a true lemon lover's dream. Not too sweet like most lemon tarts. Really beautiful tart...it is called a tart after all! Just perfect meringue on top as well. I've already told several people about Pendergast and can't wait to return to Amsterdam because I love the city, but also because I love the food at Pendergast! And thanks to owner Brandon for taking the time to give lots of recommendations for cafes, restaurants and other must see sights! This spot has been getting a lot of attention recently, and being so close, we just had to give it a shot! We made a reservation for 5:30 and once we were seated, we were given the menu (in English) and told about the specials and substitutions. For this night, they added pulled pork to the menu (which should always be on it, in my opinion!), and they had a substitute of potato salad for potato mash...not really a switch since mashed potatoes and potato salad aren't interchangeable. But we didn't get it, so I can't review it. Small note: Though they open at 5:00pm, the kitchen doesn't open until 6:00pm. We did get the spread for two. This includes 3 mains and 3 sides plus 4 small pieces of corn bread. We went for the ribs, the pulled pork, and the beef brisket with mac & cheese, collared greens, and baked beans. Ribs were very nice. Great flavor and basically fall of the bone. Sadly, the last two were mostly fat. The pulled pork was very nice and their homemade sauce, which alone tasted a bit too much of cumin, went nicely with it. This was my favorite meat. The beef brisket looked good but was just okay. Something was off, maybe it had sat under a heat lamp too long or something, but the meat was a bit mushy and not moist. Not sure how to explain it exactly. The flavor was nice though. Sean loved the collared greens. I may be from the South, but I never ate them. They did look beautiful though. Bright green but not mushy. Baked beans weren't what I was expecting, but they were good. Beans included kidney beans, large white beans, chickpeas (why?), and pieces of brisket. Beans were cooked perfectly. The mac & cheese. This was my biggest issue. If you're going to be a "Southern" restaurant, you can't make mac & cheese with Dutch cheese. I'm sorry. I like Dutch cheese, but not in this way. There was cheddar and Parmesan cheese in it as well, but that combo is not Southern. Though I've been to spots in Amsterdam that basically serve Kraft mac & cheese, so at least Pendergast tried to make it homemade! For portion size, they aren't huge. The sides are bigger than you might need, but I feel like there could have been just a bit more of each of the meats, like 2-3 more ribs, one more piece of brisket and another 1/4 cup of pulled pork. But I left full, not stuffed. The service was nice and the ladies were great to us! It's nicely to see more Southern food popping up to give me a taste of home! I'm not sure what is Dutch for OMFG. St Louis transplant running a BBQ joint. The chef chatted with us for a bit (as I was there with my friend who like myself is from the deep south). He's super picky on where he sources his meats (tries for local but says its not easy for everything, so he'll go for quality first). Smokes things to perfection. Amazing fall off the bone with that bark crust you want. I mean everything was on point. I have a small issue with the house made sauce; it's delicious but not hot. The chef (again who is awesome) told me he can really only make one sauce and he has to cater to the locals who can't handle heat. I get that. Still won't keep me from going back. Epic that some of the BBQ I've ever had was in Westerpark. read more

My family is from KC so when I heard this chef was straight from the land of BBQ, I had high hopes. The brisket was very good and the clear winner of the night. But we had about three strips and that was it - not KC style at all! The turkey was nothing to write home about. The cornbread that comes standard with all meals was pretty good.They had some American style sides, like BBQ beans (which came in close #2) and mac and cheese, but the rest of the sides were much fancier than you would find at a BBQ joint. The cocktails were excellent, as well as the lemon pie of some sort that we had for dessert. The waitstaff was attentive but failed to mention they had pulled pork as a special that night - we overall a waitress tell another table after we had ordered, boo hoo. Across the board the portions were very small and did not justify the 77 euro pricetag for the evening. If the owners are reading this: I would have liked to see sweet potato fries on the menu! read more

This place is awesome! On the way, our taxi driver warned us not to expect American BBQ in Amsterdam. Currently living in Germany I know what he meant. To our surprise, when we were seated, our water explained to us that the Owner is from Kansas! I lived in Kansas before moving to Germany. So, I was super excited to taste the food. Thankfully it lived up to the Quality I know from Kansas! My only "complaint" is the greens didn't seem to be cooked long enough, as we prefer them not so tough. The flavor was still excellent though. The brisket was awesome with a great crust! I'd definitely go back!! The service was awesome for our huge party if 13! A very welcoming restaurant whose menu changed our perception of American cuisine. How refreshing not to see burger and fries on the menu! After a day spent cycling, the food we shared together was more that adequate in portion size with superb smoky barbecue flavours and succulent tender meats. Small restaurant near the Westermarkt with a simple but cozy ambience. The chef from Kansas City will treat you with delicious slow roasted meats and typically American side dishes. This place has entered into my top 3 places to have dinner in Amsterdam. The brisket was really good, the pork ribs were amazing. But the winner by far with a standing ovation was the special of that day, beef ribs. It blew me away how good that beef rib was. Sides were ok but I'm more of a mains kind of guy anyway. First, this little restaurant is a small place that is extremely homey and welcoming to anyone that arrives! Second, drinks here are excellent. Well made cocktails. I started with the smoked trout brandade which was the perfect flavor (just the right amount of seasoning and seafood flavor). The main course I ordered the ribs, cornbeard and Mac n cheese....All three AWESOME, nothing to complain about. I'm from the USA and the mac n cheese has a hint of an European cheese twist on but excellent to say! The ribs leaving no meat on the bone and just slides off. 100% recommend. Wow. Hands down the best bbq spot in Amsterdam so far. We had briskets and pork ribs. The ribs were definitely the favorite. Meat fell off the bones and the seasoning was spot on. Briskets still have a layer of fat that can be pulled off, so juicy and tender. The bbq sauce is also great though I wish I would have some hot sauce to go with (maybe I forgot to ask). Definitely a keeper though maybe not too often for the sake of my waistline . read more

Really disappointing. Right after two hours from reservation time waiters asked us to leave explaining that quests can spend here maximum 2 hours. One can't find such a condition nor in the web site nor during or confirmation of reservation. Bad experience. read more
