After giving up on the awful church dinners in Indiana, we happened to be visiting family in…read moreJohnstown last year just in time for St. Benedict's pre-Lenten fish fry (their trial run) and I finally got to see and taste what a REAL church dinner (of the Hungarian/Slovak/Polish variety) should be. Fried fish, baked fish, haluski, macaroni and cheese, pierogies, gobs (whoopie pies to those of from New England, some of them in heretical flavors), most of it homemade and made with tender loving care by the parish's women. It's both plentiful and delicious, which can be a bad combination if you're counting calories, but as a once-a-year indulgence it's divine. This year was our second, and I think we're going to have to schedule our spring visit for pre-Lent weekend every year.
